Huh, Florida passed a bill in 2023 and promptly lost a bunch of construction and agriculture workers. Watching videos of people begging workers to stay was hilarious.
It's like a fucked up version of Brexit. "Why are you going? We need you to work!" "uhhh... you kicked us out..." "but I didn't think that would affect me!"
The Halfway Post, the tweets of which appear to be the origin of this, is a satire outlet like The Onion. It also doesn't make sense for a service like Grindr to have a local outage. Either their system as a whole is overwhelmed, or it isn't. I also wouldn't expect a max of a few thousand additional users to tip it over. The company I used to work for measured our DAU (daily active users) in the millions; a few thousand was a rounding error.
There's a map showing local outages from Downdetector, or is it being labeled incorrectly? There has absolutely been a huge spike in traffic with the RNC regardless. They're a bunch of hypocrites.
You would be wrong about the outage stuff. When apps are localized services like this it is very possible for a small part of the system responsible just for that area to crash or fail independently.
It depends on the architecture. I still can't see a big company like Grindr having an outage caused by such a small number of extra users. It would require them to both have a highly federalized architecture, but at the same time be both totally underprovisioned and lacking in autoscaling.
So many “scale” points. Could have limited memory on a k8s pod that caused the pod to die. Any number of a hundred things could have maxed out, causing failure, all while “auto-scaling” was enabled.
I'm trying to think of how poorly written the system would have to be before such a small number of users knocked it over. We had a shit system that required way too much manual intervention of the k8s cluster when the slightest thing went wrong, and our autoscaling was literally a cron job that ran every few hours to cycle through preset resource levels, and even we didn't fall apart when containers failed, pods were unhealthy, etc. It took a lot to take us down, and Grindr should be architected far better than we were.
In other news, the RNC tonight will feature three speakers who have received a Stone Cold Stunner: https://x.com/iamscottenglish/status/1813956994862313483
The Babylon Bee is a bullshit rightwing rag. On a side-note, CNN said the quiet part loud. Shakeups in the 2024 race provide much-needed jolt in interest for news outlets https://www.cnn.com/2024/07/18/media/news-outlets-viewership-2024-election/index.html So yeah. Anything coming from the media citing "inside sources" or "behind closed doors" is blatantly bullshit.
