In my circle of brown skinned friends, I'd say it's a pretty even split between Trump and Harris. A good portion of them are children/grandchildren of legal immigrants and they absolutely despise illegal immigrants.
I have a strong suspicion that a lot of these folks are "descended from immigrants who did it the right way" the way a lot of white people are "descended from a Cherokee princess." Grammy told them a lie many years ago, and they've never questioned it since. I know for a fact that I'm descended from an illegal immigrant, because I've heard the story about how he walked off a merchant marine ship for shore leave and never got back on, but if I'd never heard that story I imagine it'd be pretty easy to think of myself as descended from the pure and righteous immigrants of the past, and not the dirty hordes of today.
South Asian people I know tend to be small business owners that tend to despise the amount of regulations and hoops they have to jump through in their business life. Naturally lean towards the party that espouses cutting business regulations. One 2nd generation Mexican uncle is super boomer into Trump. Raised super catholic and has always been republican.
Likely true. My SIL finally heard the real story when she was in her late 30's early 40's that her grandparents came here illegally and that her last name was the name of a cousin's family (IIRC) and not her true last name. But, she is of the side that fucking HATES Trump
You can go one back. Immigrants with legal status/citizenship who make their way into gatekeeping roles are infamous for going extra hard on their peers, especially if their English isn't "good enough". It's that real pull up the ladder after you energy, can't let the boss even think you'd go easy on them.
I have never seen racism like the racism I've seen between Hispanics and African Americans. Or even between Hispanics and themselves. The self-loathing is absolutely insane.
There’s also an increasing view that Latinos are starting to view themselves as white. Which some are, but it’s like how back in the Ellis island days, the newest group was on the receiving end of the animosity. Like Italians weren’t considered white until a long time after they got here. And look at how Trumpy Staten Island and Long Island is now. A family friend of ours is from El Salvador. It took her 10 fucking years to get her full citizenship. She HATES illegal immigrants. But overall, from what I see anecdotally, the view is that “it’s those people they are talking about, not me.”
Not sure if this was what I posted earlier or not, but if this is how it goes down, Trump is 1000000% going to try and worm his way into a win. Democrats need at least one of NC, GA, NV, AZ to go their way or it's going to be a contested election for months up until certification. We definitely will not know the winner for a long time.
In a perfect world, both Georgia and North Carolina are called Tuesday night for Harris and PA, NV, and AZ become moot regardless of the time it takes to finalize their vote counts. Not that it would stop Trump from claiming victory, regardless, but it would make it a lot less of a contested outcome to any rational thinking person.
I think it’s already been established that the “stop the steal “ folks are not rational thinking people.
We need to reconsider the entire relationship with Mexico in terms of immigration and trade since they've replaced Canada as our largest trading partner. We were banking on them being the low-skilled workers, but now they are skilled out of that and have more value-add per worker than we anticipated.
That’s exactly what my roofer said a couple of months ago. He hires all Guatemalans and El Salvadorans because he(who happens to be Mexican) said that Mexicans no longer want to do the labor jobs or they ask for too much money. It’s an interesting dynamic that the democrats would be silly to ignore. I feel that far too often, white dems think they know what’s best for certain minority groups. Like, “you’re Mexican! Why wouldn’t you be in favor of having more Mexicans??” Like it’s as simple as a certain group automatically being in favor of something simply because it’s perceived as helping that group.
Yep. There needs a complete overhaul of immigration policy with a heavy emphasis on trade. I think you could incentivize people to play ball in that regard. Mexico needs to get a handle on its crime and corruption problems more than anything. It's hard to get them to the table when their choice is either take a briefcase full of cash from a cartel leader or get hung from a highway overpass.
