I could type for awhile in some attempt to convey the disgust, disappointment, and depression all this shit happening at the federal level has me feeling. So let's wrap that in a bubble and go to my next cluster of feelings. Family: total disgust and disappointment towards a few key members. The audacity of a certain family member who worked over 30 years in the federal government and retired well, cheering on the tear down. Believing that all these civil servants are parasitic in nature but believing these billionaires are doing something nobel. For many reasons, relationship with family has been strained but I'm done. It's not even worth discussing because I have seen their beliefs written out with pride. I'm glad I live in Oregon. Community members: I do my best to be a shining light. I treat others well and generously, I am friendly, I offer help. I avoid talking politics but will express negativity to The Situation. I listen and try to understand their perspective in the hopes that when they question or raise an eyebrow, I'm there to solidify that feeling. I recognize that most people have busy lives and are not as dialed in on what's going on. Many people are shoehorned into D or R like it's a football game, and I'm not going to change that. But I'll hang about and be that little doubt and give a little more solidity to those feelings. For my Hispanic friends, I'm there for them. For myself, I try to prepare. Looks like we got an additional vehicle purchased just in time with these new tariffs being threatened. Did you know that the bird flu basically doesn't affect ducks? I'll be hatching out tons this spring. I try to focus on what I can control to keep from spinning out.
Ducks are the "natural" hosts of avian influenza, so that makes sense from an evolutionary perspective. They can spread it, so you might want to use some type of PPE when you're around them. Edit: Ducks can get sick from Avian flu. They have more immunity than chickens or turkeys, but they aren't completely immune to it.
I'm kind of insulated against all the egg news since I raise my own and sell the excess, so when I heard that prices were stupid checked the Walmart app and an 18pk of shitty commercial chicken eggs was almost $9. So then, I started reading. True about your concern. Spread to humans is pretty rare, though. I'm not at the ppe level with them yet but if shit ramps up more I'll consider it. I use a half mask respirator when I clean out the coop but not usually to just enter it to collect eggs in the morning. I see migratory waterfowl regularly and read that there was a backyard farm with 50 hens that had to be culled in my county.... But no idea near what town. So it's definitely around.
Can you provide some links to sources? I'll admit I'm far from an expert on this topic. I just did some reading one day. From my understanding, they class these many strains into 2 groups, either low or high pathogenic strains. The low pathogenic strains can be caught by ducks but may not be noticed by the owner. Maybe poor feathers, or reduced egg production. The highly pathogenic strains will kill a chicken or turkey real quick and spread to all their friends. But ducks and waterfowl, domestic or wild, are basically immune. That disease could then pass along to the humans that tend them or the neighbors chickens. I think going from the ducks to us would be pretty low on the probability meter. The worst part of this are all the vectors it can spread by. It's spread by every part of the bird and can live in the soil for years. So much fun.
The current strains circulating are highly pathogenic. Normally waterfowl show little to no symptoms from avian flu, but that's not the case with the strains currently circulating. Here is an old study from 2011 for reference. https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC4635058/ There have been some cullings on duck farms in the US. https://www.cidrap.umn.edu/avian-in...-identify-h5n9-avian-flu-california-duck-farm
US, Russia agree to restore diplomatic missions as first step in Ukraine war talks The US is officially Russias bitch.
Yeah, the nationwide protests on Monday were being called “No Kings on Presidents Day,” so I think this is equal parts Trump using that as a comeback and “give someone enough rope”
About 50 geese were found dead near here recently, attributed to avian influenza. As for preparation, really that’s all we can do at this point. The problem with our current situation is that there’s so many different easy things could go completely sideways.
