I'm willing to sit back and let oblivion come. I'll welcome it with a drink and a toast at this point.

I don't think anyone in this thread is anywhere near advocating this. And of course I agree that it's not time to grab the muskets. However, it's worth noting that the now President-elect didn't agree with this concept in 2012 after the Romney loss.

    But okay.

This is somewhat true. The best person to address all of these issues would be the President-elect. However, he doesn't seem capable. Let's look at his second tweet after winning the election.

That's a good sign for everyone concerned about civil liberties. He let that sit for nine hours before tweeting something to walk it back a bit.

I get what you're saying on the whole, but think about it like this. You're right, a socially progressive president did things that were completely fucking horrifying. Why does it then make sense to give Donald Trump, someone who has said he wants to do terrible things, the benefit of the doubt?

Should also be worth noting: FDR was pretty reviled in his day by republicans. Him running for a 3rd term, packing the court, wanting to get involved in World War II; all reviled at the time by republicans (and rightfully in terms of packing the court, a total Bullshit move, though the other two were very debatable at the time).

Of course, you could also say the greatest President in US History (Lincoln) was so reviled when elected that half the nation up and left and started a fucking War. They all claimed the election was rigged in Lincolns favor. He was also a republican. Of course, now-a-days the only ones threatening War if an election didn't go their way was republicans, if a democrat won; and it's pretty inarguable that if Lincoln were alive today his ideals would align more with modern democrats (votes for African Americans, civil rights, more federal govt control over states, etc).

To this day you'll find southerners and northerners (hello, Indiana my old klan-state friend) who think the Lincoln memorial should be torn down and call the civil war the war of northern aggression.

North Korea. The technology they have that gives them both the ability to both travel to the sun in 24 hours AND land on it will save us all. Plus living directly on top of a 900,000 mile-wide fusion generator will save a fortune on heating.

Do they even need to do that much? I thought Supreme Leader has already declared himself the Immortal God-Emperor of Mankind and will simply use the power of the Dragonballs to obliterate Earth's enemies.

So let's go for this hypothetical:

Trump ends up rolling back on some social issues, deregulates some environmental protections, reworks tax codes in favor of business, and greatly reduces immigration into our country.
He also reworks a few trade deals to work more in favor of the US, passes term limits on members of congress, weakens the influence of the department of education, tightens controls on the banking industry, and balances the Supreme Court with two centrist appointees.

There are endless possibilities of what happens over the next 4 years, so while you may not get everything you may want out of this new administration, there is the potential to make positive changes to the country, even if it's guided by the hands of Trump.

See, this feels like a "best case scenario" if Trump gets hit on the head and forgets everything he campaigned on, and even this is not achievable. He'll never pass term limits (it's a total non-starter in Congress, and the blue states will legitimately secede before they allow a constitutional convention in this political climate), and he'll never get one centrist on the Supreme Court much less two (there will be a Senatorial hail of sulphur if he nominates anything less than an arch-conservative).

For the curious, here is the list of people Trump has vowed to select from for the Supreme Court.

    1. Keith Blackwell 2. Charles Canady 3. Steven Colloton 4. Allison Eid 5. Neil Gorsuch 6. Raymond Gruender 7. Thomas Hardiman 8. Raymond Kethledge 9. Joan Larsen 10. Mike Lee 11. Thomas Lee 12. Edward Mansfield 13. Federico Moreno 14. William Pryor 15. Margaret A. Ryan 16. Amul Thapar 17. Timothy Tymkovich 18. David Stras 19. Diane Sykes 20. Don Willett 21. Robert Young

And since Mike Lee called for Trump to drop out of the race, the list is really only at 20 I'd imagine.

Any other typical candidate that won the presidency, I'd 100% agree with you. One constant throughout his entire foray into politics has been his constant need to feed off of conflict. Expecting Trump to "fall in line" now that he's been elected, I think is a fools errand.

This is honestly laughable. I laughed out loud reading this.

    1) trade deals... sure, right. I'll believe he can negotiate that shit with other nations like Russia when I see it.

    2) this will never ever happen, ever. This is where I laughed. You need congress to pass it ("I have an idea, I'll limit my own job! While I'm at it ill limit whether or not I can be a lobbyist when I leave!") by a 3/4th majority for the consitutional amendment it would take. Congressmen are not selfless people. The only other way for this to happen is constitutional amendment, by national convention.... again, never gonna happen. There will not be another constitutional amendment in my lifetime.

    3) I fail to see how this is a good thing. Leave it up to the states? Most states seem incapable of running education, and the red states will be happy to teach creationism and other empirically anti-scientific stances. That'll make us look better on a national stage: an entire generation that views the "scientific method" as inferior to "magic book."

    4) Again, laughable. This would literally work against his own best interests as a businesssman, and make no mistake, Trump is a businessman first. That was part of the platform he ran on. Trump will do what is best for Trump. Second of all, this would take congressional approval, and again, Republican congress. If anything, banking regulations are about to go bye bye, because of the party of "small government" (unless it involves weed or sex, then they want too stop it all).

    5) Centrists? Yeah, no. Never gonna happen. Another two Scalias are more likely due to, again, republican congress. Roe v Wade will be overturned within the next four years. That's not a prediction, it's a fucking promise.

I think a lot of it boils down to which part of Trump's brain wins out: His need to win or his need to get his way. If he give in on his need to win then we're going to get everything on the GOP platform served up as he rubber stamps everything delegates most or all of the decision making. On the other hand if his need to get his way wins out then we'll see some conflict between him and Congress.

I think it will be interesting to hear the stupid shit he says in the situation room when real things happens. Things he never imagined or considered. He probably thinks fighting isis will be like playing command and conquer.

Those two things aren't separate. His need to get his own way is him winning.

Were you not watching the way he systematically destroyed every single republican challenger in the primaries? He did it his way and didn't once back down even when things turned to the absolute absurd. I don't see how this changes just because he's been elected president.
