I think he goes for the impeachment, as it then gets rid of Trump from the GOP for the long term. He can't come back, he can't run again, he loses his pension, SS detail, travel expenses, etc.

Right now I think there are a lot more GOP members that hate Trump than like him... and want him gone. Look at the messages from Powell, Arnold.

Look at how all the corporate funding has now dried up now that Trump is causing all this shit.

If the GOP is going to have a chance in the near future, they need to get rid of him, full stop, and impeachment is the best way to do that. Especially with more and more GOP members speaking up in support.

    I won't say it's a sure thing... but I think it's got a high probability of happening.

Hey, @downndirty I'm curious... what exactly does FEMA do in these kinds of situations? I only envision FEMA getting involved with flood/disaster relief... not sure I can wrap my head around what they'd be doing in DC during all this.

We do consequence management (fucking yikes), planning, operational coordination, logistics, and coms.

So, in this case, we'd make sure the Secret Service, DC police, and I dunno, Coast Guard, all talk to one another, and have no jurisdictional pissing contests or chain of command issues. We're first responders too, so think of it like having a ton of former cops/fire/EMS doing the planning, with a more holistic perspective.

Also, we're a bit of a lightning rod, so if anything goes wrong...we are to blame. Until relatively recently, (ie, Palm Beach Palpatine started throwing paper towels) we were mostly neutral.

Lastly, by having us do it, we come with our own funding and authorities, so no one has an excuse to cheap out on anything. We have a statutory ability to assign any federal resource to a given mission, so no one can pitch a fit we got the National Guard to direct traffic (ie, not one of their core mission sets) and we have the checkbook to make sure they have anything they need to do it.

I'm not sure that's true. I don't want him to run again, I don't care if he loses his pension, but losing SS protection seems like a terrible idea, even for a disgraced President. (And, I think the Former Presidents Act that Obama signed would cover him?)

    https://www.archives.gov/about/laws/former-presidents.html

the Former Presidents Act addresses eligibility for benefits — such as the pension, staff and an annual “security and travel” allowance. The act says those benefits would not apply to a president whose service is terminated “by removal pursuant to section 4 of article II of the Constitution of the United States of America,” which addresses impeachment and removal from office. (The emphasis is ours.)

If he's actually removed, then he loses them.

Upon closer inspection, it seems that he'd lose the funding for said security, not the option to have the security itself. It might be that he can still have an SS detail, etc, but he just has to pay for it himself.

It's unprecedented. The Joint chiefs of staff had to put out a statement saying that the US military will protect the constitution and telling you what the constitution says. What a crazy ass ride this has been.

One of my favorite ironies is that I constantly hear about how the media is unfair to Republicans, and I only hate Republicans because that's what the media tells me to do. Today reminds me that whenever I listen to Republicans talk live, in their own words, I hate them more than I thought possible. The media softens just how big of assholes they truly are.

Yep... that's one of the morons.

Just like this retired Navy SEAL who was also there, and bragging about it, before the FBI came knocking. You know, the guy who runs a special weapons training school.

    https://abcnews.go.com/US/video-shows-retired-navy-seal-boasting-breaching-capitol/story?id=75206495

    He's changed his tune now:

"I would like to express to you just a cry for clemency, as you understand that my life now has been absolutely turned upside-down," Newbold told ABC News. "I am not a terrorist. I am not a traitor."

There were doctors, cops, lawyers, elected officials, firemen, and all sorts of other fucking nutjobs who were being Tweeted Pelosi's position in the building by a Republican lawmaker.

Hate to break it to you, but just because it was a fucking shitty attempt, does not mean it didn't happen. You don't have to win a war to wage it.
