The real danger is if a Presidential election flips based on this shit. Imagine 2020 if the state legislatures of Arizona, Georgia, Wisconsin, etc just said "well, we think Trump won our state, even though our voters disagreed" and sent Trump electors instead of Biden electors. Do you think California, New York, etc are going to just be ok with that?
Despite the fevered-dreams of Canadians, it won’t be. But financial insolvency surely will. I still don’t smell the gas powering the outrage over this one. It also left “no-excuse” absentee voting in place, expanded weekend voting and cements other mail-in/absentee voting processes. It appears that people that prefer mail-in voting have more options than before. As for the actual polling stations, it implemented a mechanism to measure wait times and force changes if they reach a certain threshold. In aggregate, there may be some bum decisions, but none of this reads like some nefarious election rigging ploy.
Sure you can give them the benefit of the doubt that it’s not a direct rigging scheme, but also you have to ask why they want to make more laws. There is literally not enough one-off cases of voter fraud to make an actual difference in the outcome of an election. The gop have been on the hunt to find a problem for all of their solutions. Just because they allege something doesn’t mean it’s actually a thing. The one thing they can’t come to terms with is the fact that they aren’t going to be in control for much longer and are scared. Instead of evolving, they are trying to pick their voters instead of the other way around. At the end of the day, I don’t trust republican politicians or their motives for doing anything. Democrats can be shitheads about stuff, but they aren’t trying to stop people from voting. One party wants a democracy, the other party doesn’t.
That’s fine, I’m not going to take issue with your opinion on that. In many ways I agree, I’m just looking at Georgia law and reviewing the details.
I’m sure it’s just a complete coincidence that this law is being past right when Georgia had record numbers of minority voters turn out during the election. No, Republicans are not at ALL trying to rig the elections as they are known to do, like they just tried to du, like they’ve always been trying to do. I hope now Georgia starts losing shit as a result of it. Enough noisy activism will get rid of the Augusta Masters, I’d love for these corrupt fucks to lose the most prestigious golf tournament in the world due to their actions. They’re going to go after the MLB all-star game too, though that’s less of a big deal.
I saw that some directors will refuse to make movies in Georgia as well. I didn’t realize how many are actually filmed there. But a massive loss of tax revenue might start to change some minds.
Having a golf tournament called "The Master's" down there ought to be ripe for disruption at the moment....
Yeah, Georgia has offered a lot of tax breaks over the last few decades to lure film production to the state. It's the go-to destination for when you don't want your film to scream "I was filmed in Southern California" but it's too cold to go to Canada.
I remember early episodes of FX shows like "Archer", some stuff like "the Walking Dead" and "Green Lantern" all had "made in GA" ads at the end. I imagine a lot of that continued throughout the years.
Seeing as they shut their fucking mouths about the Chinese film market because of the dollar signs I’m sure it’ll be a while before Georgia really bleeds from the movie industry fleeing. Some other non Cali state will eventually offer just as competitive rates and it’ll shift away.
Yeah, that’s where Pinewood is. That’s where the MCU movies, the biggest movies ever, are shot. Suck them dry, as far as I’m concerned.
From what I can remember, most of the film dollars are in the form of tax credits, it's not like they get a cut of proceeds. Ostensibly, the states benefit from small ancillary functions like animation studios, audio/video engineering firms, and local production capacity (CNN is based in Atlanta), as well as some tourism boosts (film production is a huge but temporary endeavor). This kind of tax-credit based economic development is at best a wash. It's more likely that the local officials/politicians claim a cool, high-visibility addition and get some buzz, but it's nowhere near the real, long-term revenue boost that a good tech or manufacturing facility provides. Lastly, lots of places have film studios built to various specifications/scales. The ones in GA probably aren't unique enough to keep them there over similar ones in FL, TX or anywhere else. There's a small, but persistent need to have access to extras, but if they could shoot a movie in Puerto Rico 5 months after Hurricane Maria with no issues, most US cities are more than capable of meeting that need. I see an interesting dilemma popping up between Atlanta, afaik the only major metropolitan area in the US that boasts a majority African-American population, and the decision to economically protest voting restrictions laws designed to reduce the voting behavior of....African Americans. Bottom line, Killer Mike needs to take his blood pressure meds, he's going to be a busy man.
What I think will be potentially the biggest domino would be Tyler Perry. His entire production empire is based in Georgia and he could go a VERY long way on influencing others to take their business elsewhere if he really pushes the issue.
Matt Gaetz Is Said to Be Investigated Over Possible Sexual Relationship With a Girl, 17 https://nyti.ms/3ulBLz5
Now we know why he made the announcement about possibly not running for re-election. This is probably the least creepy thing he’s done tbh.
He’s probably fucking that “son” he has too, I don’t know why that wasn’t investigated. That creepy shit merchant would steal the pennies off a dead woman’s eyes, nothing is beneath him.
The investigation was opened under Barr as well. Imagine simping for Trump as hard as Gaetz did, and you can't even get a courtesy squashing-of-a-federal-investigation.
