I joked earlier, but I'm already hearing bitching from my in laws about how they don't have a holiday celebrating white people.

this pandemic should have been more targeted

I mean, it's doing a good job of bringing white people back into the ruling class of doctors. Hell, I even got contacted by a white guy trying to scan me by saying he could help me pay off my student loans.
Nett is right as well, it's all about the sales on mattresses!

Imagine being so racist that you're actually mad about a day off work.

If they made Stalin's birthday a holiday I'd shut up and say "this is a day for the proletariat" when my boss tried to get me to come in to work.

The Senate is a problem, and one of its problems is that it blocks any effort to address the fact that it is a problem.

"Democratic Senator from West Virginia" still sounds like a character Jim Varney would play, or someone in the Beverly Hillbillies.
Aside from that dude, how is the minority "blocking" a voting rights deal?

The procedural solutions to this kind of toilet clogging are...unhealthy to say the least.

Federalizing further voting requirements is going to be killed one way or another. Even if it passes, it will eventually die in the Supreme Court. It's pretty clearly outlined in the Constitution.

Republicans will kill it because their entire electoral strategy revolves around anti-democratic measures. That truth aside, there's nothing unconstitutional about it, and it's a clearly defined Article I power.

Well, the Democrats are probably going to kill it themselves. They can’t even get 50 of their own Senators to agree on something consistently. And according the Supreme Court, it’s not that clear. The language that can be superseded by Congress is, “Time, Place and Manner.” Manner being that states can’t impose inconsistent and unfair practices, etc., but overall election authority is primarily given by the states, at least right now. The rest is pretty up in the air.

We don’t really have national elections. We have state elections that send representatives to the national level (i.e. federalism). At least that’s the way it was explained to me.

What the Democrats are proposing falls pretty comfortably within the same definition of "manner" that has been accepted when it comes to things like the Civil Rights Act and the Voting Rights Act for decades now. There's nothing in the bills that would be a federal takeover of elections, it's just requirements that the still-state-run elections would have to adhere to.

(Im assuming we’re both talking about H.R. 1 here.)

The problem is that Article stipulates authority for regulation of Congress and Senate elections, not presidential elections. That’s the part I think will make the entire thing null and void since the SC has already ruled on that pretty definitively.

    https://taskandpurpose.com/news/navy/us-navy-reading-list-how-to-be-an-antiracist/

The Navy gets drawn into culture wars based on including "How to Be an Antiracist" in this list of voluntary reading: https://www.navy.mil/CNO-Professional-Reading-Program/

If I were a sailor, I'd probably be all "UGH, now this?" In fairness, I haven't read the book, so it could just be "Chapter 1: Don't be an asshole. Chapter 2: DID YOU FUCKING READ CHAPTER 1? WHY ARE YOU STILL FUCKING HERE?"

However, the article states 1 in 5 reported racism on aircraft carriers in 2019. That stat feels cherry-picked because "aircraft carriers" isn't exactly "the entire US Navy", and 1 in 5 honestly seems low to me. Similar studies at my workplace on discrimination and harassment have been slightly higher, the worst I saw for DHS was around 40%. The Navy's definition of racism and DHS's definition of discrimination and harassment are probably very different, but I doubt you'd see 1 in 5 if you asked other branches.

Of course, asshats must both ass and hat, so Arkansas Sen. Tom Cotton (who shouldn't ever open his mouth on racism based on that name alone) quoted the book saying racism and capitalism are historically intertwined (you know, like how slavery was justified for hundreds of years...or how capitalist countries NEVER exploited a group of folks ever again) and commenced pearl-clutching, like capitalism is a synonym for Jesus and is beyond reproach from the trampled.

I am kind of torn here. If I had to make sailors read 50 books, I would think there might be a few that would warrant inclusion above this. However, I trust the admirals to do their fucking job of preparing and protecting our sailors for the threats they face, and can't imagine this was a flippant decision based on a whim. I also think this goes a greater distance preparing sailors for life post-service: we live in a diverse society, and that diversity is only increasing. Navigating that is increasingly a skill, and most of us are quite feeble at it, as evidenced by the cringe-inducing inclusivity training I get (not to mention how utterly fucking toothless it is). Based on conversations after the George Floyd murder, yeah...I can see some value in educating sailors on how to talk about it, how to approach these situations, and what some best practices might be.

I also see this as a minor thing to be outraged about. FFS, the Navy could put "What to Expect When You're Expecting" or "Twilight" on this list, and it wouldn't matter.

But, it's not a great thing to bring our military into the forefront of identity politics and culture wars, especially given many of them leave the military and join the police.

Out of a crew of 5-6k sailors? That's a lot of microaggressions. I think this guy covered it pretty well: https://twitter.com/dave_brown24/status/1407745748909838343
