Katanji Brown-Jackson, famous for refusing to define what a woman is, has just been sworn into the Supreme Court.
Of all the things to ask a potential Supreme Court Justice, this is what they wasted her confirmation hearing on. So stupid. At least the Senate didn't trot out a walking disaster to make up some assault allegations this time.
She’s a moron with a platform and shouldn’t have one. I don’t know who follows her or why, because practically everything she says is stupid.
See, this pisses me off. Legally speaking, the definition of a woman is very contextual, and full of nuance. When morons ask her these types of leading questions, they know full well that there's no way to give a reasonable answer to it, never mind one that the public will understand or relate to, so instead they just set it up for a 10 second "she so stupid" talking point designed to trigger their followers.
Are there actual legal definitions of this? Or are they de facto definitions based on court rulings around this issue?
I always thought that having two X chromosomes was definition enough, but apparently that doesn't cut it anymore.
Is a 16 year old considered a woman? How about an 8 year old? 1 year old? In what context? What bathroom you're expected to use, or legally allowed to marry?
See, most people think "woman" is the same as "female". It's not. Woman is very interpretive... depending on context.
Read through this page to get an idea of what a complex subject that is. https://www.justice.gc.ca/socjs-esjp/en/women-femmes/Definitions
I got a bit of a crash course in this at work, but generally speaking, it depends on the context. For example, at a gynecologist's office some of the activities might need a very clear definition of "female" versus at an office with gender neutral bathrooms. One of the more interesting parts of the gender/non-binary shit is how it affects children, specifically how we're biased based on gender in treatment of children whose gender would otherwise not be a factor. So, some of the legal precedent nowadays towards kids is moving towards complete gender neutrality. Ie, if we're dealing with refugee infants/toddlers below a certain age, it makes little sense to distinguish because it may influence their treatment. For adults, a big one is basically like "you can have male genitals and use a female bathroom if you are undergoing treatment for dismorphia or gender reassignment. If not, you might be accused of harassment and suffer the consequences." If you're trans, and have some form of clinical support for that transition, it's a huge shield against wild (and cosmically infrequent) allegations of improper behavior.
Yes needlessly complex definitions from a government website. To answer your question with that site’s definitions a one year old is a person who is a woman as long as they are cisgender or identify as one.
Which is hilarious because there's no way that a one year old has the legal standing to identify as anything other than a poop machine. My main point stands. There is no single answer to "define a woman" without getting into nuance and context.
Right, they should've brought out a forensic accountant instead to explain how his debts were magically paid off.
https://twitter.com/JennaEllisEsq/status/1517286895524397057 The Trump camp sees DeSantis coming (how could they not?), and is starting to try to undercut him. It'll be interesting to see at what point DeSantis thinks is the right point to break with Trump and start attacking him. You have to beat the king to be the king, but if he does it too early he won't have enough momentum to carry him forward.
So they’re really going after Madison Cawthorn. Latest leaks show him exchanging money for doing gay stuff and traveling with some dude.
