Upgrading the old CF lights in the shop and the garage. Picked up a couple of these based on a recommendation from a friend to try them out in the gatage. https://a.co/d/5aOzPyJ Man, they’re awesome. Combined with a Leviton motion detecting dimmer switch that works with Apple Homekit, it’s handy as fuck. So good I got 4 more to carry on with the shop lighting upgrade. Might be a bit more $$$ than cheap CF, but they are quiet, and throw a shit ton of light. Highly recommend.
I just got cheap 4' fluorescent fixtures, put 2 led 4' bulbs in each. Have 2 rows of 5 for the length of my shop. It is mother fucking day light down there and no matter where i am there isn't any shadows because there is so much light.
Spent a couple hours yesterday pretending to be a plumber. The 20 year old reverse osmosis filter gave up the ghost and bits of membrane got caught up in the fridge water system (cold water dispenser and ice machine) and the filtered water faucet. Not fun. Had to rip the fridge apart to replace the inlet water valve and then redid some copper hose that had kinked and split. Fixed all that and then put in a new 6 stage water filter and pump. I’ll have you know I only had one leak and it didn’t cause any damage. I also only went to Home Depot once. But that was only because they were useless and didn’t have any 5/16th water lines or couplings. Amazon next day to the rescue. I consider that a success!
I just replaced my water softener. While much more simple than the system you describe, immediately after replacing it the ice maker in my fridge stopped working, although the cold water dispenser is fine. It’s going to have to wait until after the holidays, I’ve got enough right now to do as it is.
Funnily enough after I replaced all that the ice maker is now working properly again. For years it has been making progressively smaller cubes, so it was a surprise to see just how big they are now. Funny how that works when you have the proper volume of water flowing.
What brand/design fridge? Whirlpool (aka Kitchen Aid, Maytag and maybe others) had a design flaw in their bottom freezer units with a water dispenser through the door where the water tube for for the ice make would freeze. It happened to ours. Plenty of water, but no ice. Or, check the little arm that tells the icemaker that the bin is full. Sometimes it'll get bumped or stuck in the up position and it thinks it's full.
Kenmore side by side. I’ve never had this issue before so I’m associating it with the water softener replacement, assuming maybe a mineral deposit broke loose and clogged the line, but I’ll check the freezing issue also. I’ve moved the arm up and down a few times to “reset” it, and pulled the ice tray and and made sure it was put back in fully, but neither helped.
You may want to try and let the freezer thaw out a bit too. Also the water line might have to go through a few cycles to prime itself after being emptied like that.
Is there really that much of a difference in interior paint? The paint store is trying to sell me on the Sherwin Williams "Emerald" paint line. Even with a contractor discount, it's almost $90/gallon after tax.
The $90/gallon will absolutely better than the cheapest bullshit paint they sell. It will take less coats to get a good finished surface, it will hide imperfections better, it will resist damage and staining better, it will look better for much longer. But, it's tough to say how much better it will be than some other brand's top tier paint that is a little less expensive. I haven't used that paint. I did do apartment maintenance for a while, and so got to use the cheap shit and can definitely tell the difference between it and the stuff I put on my own walls over the years.
Can’t speak to SW specifically, but I was painting parts of my house red years ago. The cheap paint didn’t cover worth shit, even with primer and 2 coats it looked like shit. I ponied up to the brand recommendation by the paint dept guy, and forked out three times the cash. Totally worth it. No longer needed primer, and did a great job with one coat.
All interior walls have already been covered in two coats of their primer so no need to odd colors or anything. Was doing some research on it and stumbled across this: https://www.sherwin-williams.com/en-us/special-offers I'll just their tier two stuff and save 35%!
I ended up with the SW Duration paint line. After contractor discount, it's about $75 a gallon. So, definitely not cheap. But I cannot seem to get a streak free finish. It's hard to describe but it looks like half the ceiling is painted in matte/eggshell and half in satin. Any pointers? I think I either need a longer nap (I'm using 3/8 on smooth, primed walls) and/or more paint on the roller? Or am I just that shitty of a painter? Found this pic that shows kind of what I'm talking about.
I'd be tempted to say there's too much paint, so maybe try a smaller nap. Is that one coat? Multiples? If it's just one, try a second, see if it smooths shit out. Usually expensive paint like that is a single-coat application, in my total one-off past experience of not being a painter. (I generally oil or stain stuff, not paint it).
Still need to see it once it dries but I think I figured/researched the solution. I was not putting anywhere near enough paint on the wall. I'd dip the roller like usual, roll it onto the wall but would keep rolling well after I've applied the paint trying to "even it out" but at that point the roller was pulling paint back off the wall because it was so dry creating those streaks.
The weather here has been absolute shit, and as a result, ice is everywhere. Walt's Life Hack: Can't find rock salt for the sidewalk or driveway? Get water softener crystals. It's literally salt. And from what I understand, the contractors can't use it in their salt spreaders because of the size. I'm only telling you this here because none of you live near me. Rock salt is noweher to be found around here, so I bought three 40# bags and it works like a charm. When I left that store, I saw the water treatment store across the street had a whole pallet of 50# bags of rock salt, so I stopped and got some there too. I expect they're cleaned out by now. Between that and the 200# of sand I got, we should be good for now.
The Wifey is in tears. She absolutely did not want a recessed sink bowl for the bathrooms. We ordered these countertops and their system has all kinds of warnings if you try to order a design they can't make. Unfortunately, no warning that if you make the counter depth less than 22", then the only bowl style is a recessed bowl. Cabinets are already built, door openings done, tile work done etc etc all based off the measurements we gave them. They'll take them back but then we're at square one with trying to find something else and we don't have time for that.
Pound for pound it’s more. The bags I got were 40# for about $9 and a 50# of salt is about that as well. But if there’s no other options and the family is “skating” on the driveway, it’s well worth it.
