I have a few days that really stick out in my mind. The first time I came on as a substitute as a professional in front of 10,000+ people really sticks out in my mind, as well as my first start and shutout as a professional were great days. But the coolest thing I've ever been a part of that will never leave my mind was attending the River Plate vs. Boca Juniors match this past October in Buenos Aires. Easily the most unbelievable event I've ever been a part of.
My best day was like quite a few of yours in the way that it wasn't due to any one particular event, rather just everything being exactly as it should for twenty-four hours. I was in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan. I was slightly lucky to be there because the borders had only recently reopened following the death of President Saparmurat Niyazov. This was a man who ruled a country with huge gas reserves by saying things like "I watched young dogs when I was young. They were given bones to gnaw to strengthen their teeth. Those of you whose teeth have fallen out did not chew on bones. This is my advice." Needless to say, it's a pretty fascinating place. It's also incredibly beautiful. Situated at the foot of the Alborz Mountains that separate Turkmenistan from Iran, former city planner Niyazov got to play Sim City for real and created a stunning capital of white marble palaces. He also built a towering $12m monument to himself, topped with a thirty-seven foot gold statue of him, that rotated so it always faced the sun. The weather was perfect, the food was great, the beer was cheap, the women were beautiful, and it came at a point in my trip where it felt like decades since I'd been at home and the prospect of return was still a long way off. It was a fascinating time to be there and I ended up simply hanging out with a group of locals, drinking beer into the small hours just enjoying life like never before.
