Typically the cheap russian steal case has cheap russian powder that is hella dirty. Also has more corrosive chemicals in the powder. Needs to be cleaned quicker. I missed the boat when WalMart was unloading everything. I bought like ten boxes of 9mm and 5 of .357. They were selling 400 round cases of 223 for 60 bucks to get it off the shelves.
That's kind of my thinking too. I have 100 rounds each of defensive in 9mm and .40 S&W. I can't imagine ever needing that much (Or any for that matter), but I've got it plus another 1000 or so rounds of range ammo. Range ammo will still put an unpleasant and discouraging hole in someone.
I haven't been to the range in far too long, and still have 600 rounds of 9mm FMJ, plus 25 hollow points. I haven't checked .223 prices, but I have 180 rounds of that for the AR.
For God's sake....I haven't checked 00 Buck in a while... A dollar a round for no name (Well, I guess "Rio" is a name) shells. It gets even more disturbing: You can finance your 5 rounds of shitty Rio 00 Buck. If you want Remington shells...the minimum price is $1.40. Each.
In a sign that things might be returning to normal, I just got 200 rounds of Winchester range .40 S&W from Cabelas for $69 w/ free shipping. Right now, 34.5 cents per round is one hell of a deal for .40.
I went out to breakfast with a friend yesterday, she's a single woman who lives alone. She was telling me she wants to buy a gun (Yikes!) and that she went to the range with some friends a few days before and started crying. She never even fired a round she was so anxious. I offered to loan her my little adorable Walther P22Q along with 100 rounds so she could go back to the range with her friends. I handed the gun over to her yesterday and gave her a quick run down on how to handle it and basic gun safety...ie...keep your finger off the trigger, know where the barrel is pointed at all times, always clear the chamber etc.. She was literally shaking when I handed it to her. I tend to forget how people who aren't used to guns react to them. She told me she took it home, put it in the closet, and covered it . It made her nervous just having it in the house. I got home from work tonight and she called me very excited and informed me she shot the gun and all the rounds hit the target. She was so proud of herself, but even better she felt much more comfortable holding a firearm when she realized it wasn't going to just randomly go off and kill someone. So, Yay! I'll get her to move up to a 9mm eventually so she can actually protect herself.
I had that realization when two of my friends jumped down my throat during a conversation after some shooting that I didn’t NEED an assault weapon that enjoy guns as if they are some inherently evil thing with the only purpose is death and destruction. Realized neither of them hadn’t even touched a gun in their life let alone fired one. Their only concept of a gun is what they’ve seen on movies, the news media’s portrayal, and contentious political arguments. Growing up around them and with the proper respect for their power they’ve always been in line physiologically with any other common object you find around the house. They’re inanimate not some conscious boogeymen. Take people shooting. Demystifyies them a lot.
Try ammoseek.com I just picked up 500 rounds of brass Winchester .40 S&W for $230. Right now if you can find brass .40 or 9mm under for under .65 a round, it's a deal. You kind of have to keep on top of reloading the page to find a deal, but sometimes they're there. In other news, I bought a Mossberg 500. I wanted a 590M, but those just aren't available at a decent price. I also bit the bullet and bought 50 rounds of Winchester military 00 buck for $1.40 a round + shipping. Ouch. I also ordered a few hundred rounds of #6 12 gauge (For .31 a round)...I figure at 50 feet #6 will fuck up someone's day or I can just shoot turkeys with it. Either, or. Watching tonight's riots, #6 will suffice to make them go away if they become a problem to me.
I know you're not fond of your roommates, but 00 buck will go through multiple walls and still have quite a lot of energy on the other side. At the ranges I expect to engage someone inside my house, I keep #4 buckshot loads in my home defense shotgun. There is a difference between #4 buck and #4 bird shot: The internet is littered with anecdotal stories of fist sized or bigger holes blown into a people at close ranges with bird shot, but bird shot doesn't have the mass or density to reliably penetrate deep enough to cause more than a gruesome, but shallow wound that is otherwise superficial. Still, a #6 shot load at 50ft or less will get their attention and probably fulfill your stated end goal.
i shoot hogs with 00 buck. I would absolutely not use it in a home defense gun for the reasons you stated. Shot that size is excellent at punching through their “armored” shoulders, and would also be great at punching through both an intruder, the wall behind them, the neighbors wall, the neighbor, and probably imbed into some furniture or something.
If a projectile will not penetrate multiple walls, it is not lethal. If you're not going to use lethal rounds, get some pepper spray, or a baseball bat. https://www.theboxotruth.com/the-box-o-truth-1-the-original-box-o-truth/
Broke down and bought an actual CCW gun....a Kimber Micro 9, basically a baby 1911. Right now I'm searching for some new grips, those black ones just look wrong.
I'm trying to eventually get all the Henry Golden boys in all calibers. Walmart had a 45-70 in the case, stock already scratched to shit. Manager only wanted to knock $50 off the price, so I passed.
Has anyone had any experience with a Taurus Judge? I know, I know...Taurus has had quality issues in the past, but it seems the past few years they've moved beyond that and it's hard to shake a bad reputation. Anyways, I'm not looking at one for any practical purpose...I just have a thing for hand cannons. 45 long Colt/.410 that fits in the palm of my hand simply sounds fun.
ive wanted one as well, simply for the “fun” aspect like you said. I’ve had nothing but great experiences with Taurus, own two of them myself, a revolver and a semi. I know they have a reputation for being unreliable, but they certainly didn’t get it from me.
I have the judge public defender in poly. I can't think of a single quality issue it could ever have. It's about as simple a pistol as you can get. They're great for a bedside, fire-.410-birdshot-at-intruder-in-the-dark type of firearm. Not that great for plinking cans or target shooting, but reasonably fun to shoot otherwise. My step dad has one also, he thinks it is a solid gun, too.
I've noticed that there are accessories out there to put stabby things on the front of some of my long guns, but so far I've resisted. But, if there was an option to shoot bayonets from one of my guns...I might buy it, just because. I also picked up new grips for my Kimber: Pearl seemed like a good choice and for good measure I bought a set of gold plated grip screws. I'm getting all classy and shit over here.
