This is the case for saving money on your gun/optics by shopping hard and doing some work yourself (in this case, refinishing and bedding).

I saved enough to shop around and pick up a box of every readily-available high end target round I could so ammunition testing will be a blast tomorrow. I'll take the aperture sights off and put my Leupold 36X on the rifle for hair-splitting precision. I'm hoping the Suhl will finally put down some sub-.25" 5x5 groups at 50 yards... it has been close but has thrown some fliers that I think are due to the cheaper ammunition I typically shoot with.

I need to get the benchrest stock I have designed for this rifle finished. Then it can really show it's potential.

Ever wondered how much lead is deposited into the backstops at ranges? I saw this while headed into a local indoor range yesterday.

Holy. Shit. The best part? This was half of what they had. I don't know how long it had been since they cleaned out the backstops (chopped tires- 16 lanes total), but I am impressed.

Can anyone give me suggestions for a decent sized pistol? I'm 6'4, 250lbs, and almost every pistol I've tried feels extremely small in my hand. So far, the best thing I've tried is a Colt 1911 that my grandfather gave me from when he was in the Army during WWII(I think). However, It isn't something I want to carry or shoot regularly as it has some sentimental value attached to it.

If it helps at all, I looked into the Desert Eagles a bit, but have heard they are just kindof ridiculous and mostly for show.

If an M1911(A1?) fit your hand, but you don't want to shoot that particular pistol, then I would go get as close a replica to that as possible, or try something in a similar flavor. I think Remington recently came out with a 1911 that's supposed to be close to WWII vintage ones, with a few modifications.

If you kinda like the Desert Eagle, perhaps you would like the Jericho 941, aka "Baby Eagle" or "Uzi Eagle". Versions come in 9mm, .41 AE (hence 941), .40S&W, and .45ACP.

I have a Baby Eagle .40 and love it. Hands down the best shooting pistol I own.

Anybody have any recommendations on where I can find a reputable dealer that sells Sig Sauer pistols at an affordable price? I'm looking for a Sig P226 and found a really cheap one on ImpactGuns.com but wanted to see if anyone had any experience with them or any other retailer.

    Thanks.

From reviews that I've read by others who have purchased from Impact, their customer service leaves a lot to be desired. Check out budsgunshop.com, as their proces are normally decent and the customer service is really good. Also, I don't remember off the top of my head, but I believe that CDNN sells Sig pistols. You can check their newest catalog here. I bought my pistol through them and they were great. Low prices, too.

You can also find a local Sig dealer (or a gun show) where they sell factory reconditioned Sigs. They're basically police guns that get traded in every few years. Most cops only use their gun for qualifying, so they are basically nothing more than barely broken-in Sigs with some holster wear. They're inspected at the factory, and I'm pretty sure carry the same warranty as a new Sig, but at a better price. If I remember correctly, Sig ships them in Red boxes, with a red sticker instead of Blue boxes/stickers.

I finally feel like I'm doing some really high-quality work.

Everything you see was done from scratch. I re-shaped the stock's grip, bought the grip cap rough finish, and all of the fitting, polishing, cold-bluing, etc. was done by hand.

So I finally bought a centerfire rifle for myself. Up until now, I've simply borrowed or loaned rifles for a season.

It's a Winchester Ranger (or 670) in .270 Winchester and it's basically a budget version of the M70 with a simple stock and blind magazine. It was originally owned by my cousin and he takes great measures to care for his guns so it's in very good shape for being a 25 year old hunting rifle. It came with a scope (Weaver V9), steel rings and bases, a sling, and 120 rounds of good ammunition and I paid only $450 for the whole lot (woohoo!). I ran a few cheap rounds through it and it shot 2" groups at 100 yards with an improvised rest (towel on a rock), and that is good enough for now. Needless to say, I owe my cousin some favors.

The best part- I used this rifle to shoot my first deer several years ago. I am very glad to own this now. If you're a whitetail in Minnesota, you're officially fucked now.

Bambi was delicious. I shot it while posted on a drive. A 150 gr. bullet knocked the shit out of it.

Visited a gunmaker when I was in Edinburgh. As in glass cabinets filled with shotguns priced at £50,000

They had a .308 with a fucking silencer. I asked the guy about it, and not only is it allowed, it's encouraged. Anything from a .22 to .308 he says is commonly silenced to not disturb the neighbors.

    Crazy.

I'll post pics when I get home later.

Yup. I know a Scottish chick that has several suppressed rifles. She's moving here and has to leave the suppressors at home.

Hop across the ocean and you have to jump through hoops to get one. It's bullshit.

Wouldn't bringing one of these home be fun?

    <a class="postlink" href="http://www.6mmbr.com/gunweek048.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://www.6mmbr.com/gunweek048.html</a>

Quote of the article: "First there is the recoil reduction--felt recoil with the suppressed 6BR is that of a 22 magnum."

    or

    <a class="postlink" href="http://www.6mmbr.com/gunweek069.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://www.6mmbr.com/gunweek069.html</a>

Just because it's interesting (compared to hunting over here): "I'm not a competitive sport-shooter. Normally, the only time I go to a "commercial" rifle range is to take the test for my hunting license. Every year, I must re-qualify for a shooting license to hunt big game and seals. In Norway, you must pass an actual shooting test before you can hunt big game. This test requires five shots at a deer silhouette target at 100 meters. No rests are allowed--you must shoot off-hand or with a sling only. You have to place five shots inside a 30 cm circle over the front leg."

I'll never understand why suppressors have such a huge stigma in the US. They make guns more fun to shoot and scare pretty ladies less. What's not to like.

Every year Gemtech has a promotion where they will pay the $250 tax stamp for one of their suppressors. I'm going to take them up on it this year... my shorty M-4 is just too damned loud for picnics.

My thoughts exactly. I'd love to be able to drive around and shoot coyotes and raccoons all night without hearing all my neighbors bitch about it the next day. You'd think they'd encourage using them.
I'd gladly pay for the tax stamp to get one, but unfortunately I live in Minnesota where they're illegal. But in all four surrounding states it's perfectly fine to own one.

Why would you want the BATF having a set of your finger prints on file?

You can't fingerprint a living trust, which is the listed owner on all of my ATF forms. You also don't have to get a law enforcement signature either. Or file the trust paperwork with a court to be legal.

EDIT: And if I ever want to pass on the firearms and other goodies to my kids, I just add them as a trustee. No estate tax.

Here are a couple of pics... no close ups though.

And yes, if you look closely, there's a suppressor on one of those rifles.

I went shooting for the first time today (yes, ever. What can I say, I'm a city-boy...). My girlfriend's family took me to a quarry out in BFE and we blew up some fruit and some water balloons. Hands down the most fun I've had in a long time. I got to try a .22 revolver, .38 S&W, a .45 Mac-10, and some sort of AK clone. They've totally created a monster...I've been lusting on Gunbroker.com to start pricing my first purchase ever since I got home. I'm sure I'll be posting here more frequently as I try more guns and start to narrow down what I'm looking for.

For all around fun I suggest a AR15. Since the panic has worn off the prices have dropped back down. Bullets are still a bitch price wise. You can buy .22 conversion kits or ones with dedicated .22 uppers so you aren't blowing through money at the range. Plus with the limitless amounts of tactiCool add ons there is no end to what you can build for yourself.

A .22 is a good started size for someone just looking to have fun either with pistols or rifles. My all time favorite fun shooter of ours is the classic nylon 66. A super light .22 rifle that would knock birds out of trees all day long.
