Well, here's one half of the lines I have to put on this shotgun stock. I still have to deepen all of the lines and fill/even it out, but it's a big relief to lay out one side well. Hopefully I can do a repeat performance on the other. There's a few nicks and scratches, but they'll finish out.
Can anyone recommend a night vision scope for an AR-15 for hunting? It is not really hunting it is more like slaughtering pigs that come to a feeder at night, I have zero knowledge of night vision stuff.
New poster around here, but in a PM with Katokoch I mentioned that I am somewhat of a budding holster maker and he suggested that I share some pictures. So here are some samples. I am currently doing IWB hybrid (kydex and leather) concealment holsters, next up are some Raven styled OWB when I get time. More can be seen on my flickr if anyone is interested: http://www.flickr.com/photos/jason_roth/ Kahr CW40, desert camo: Tan and Black by Jacam2002, on Flickr Righthand PPKS: WALTHER PPKS 2 by Jacam2002, on Flickr Small of the back LCP with mag carrier: Ruger LCP with extra mag carrier by Jacam2002, on Flickr Small of the back crossdraw Taurus .357: Taurus .357 in a hybrid holster I made for a friend by Jacam2002, on Flickr I've only recently gotten into this and trying to improve with each new one. Enjoy! or not.
What an awesome, kick ass rifle! Historical significance and a great manufacturer's stamp on the reciever. Once again I'm not jealous at all. This is what a checkering panel looks like after 10 additional hours are sunk into it (2 1/2 nights of work) after getting all the lines scratched in. Getting all of the diamonds sharp and even takes even more effort than I thought, especially when you've got to repeat it on both sides. 95% done there. I feel like the pudgy kid in high school track who managed to cross the hurdle without smashing his nuts on it after sitting back and looking at the checkering I laid down on the stock.
In regards to shotgun ammo, what would you arm yourself for self-defense? The associate at The Academy swears by Turkey Shot, but a slug seems to be more reliable. Remington Elite has a slug/buckshot combo, but it's fairly expensive and I want to get used to the recoil.
Stick with 00 or 000 buckshot. Slugs would go through a wall or three and turkey shot may not do enough damage at longer range.
Just be aware that 00 Buck will go right through a wall as well. Any projectile with sufficient energy for lethal penetration will.
No. 4 buck is the smallest pellet that I would use for home defense. It is going to have enough penetration to incapacitate an intruder. Turkey loads in birdshot size 6, 5, and 4 will provide gruesome, but shallow wounds that are not going to greatly affect vital organs. After all, it's adequate for killing a turkey and I have yet to hear of a 200 lb. turkey breaking into someone's home. For all practical purposes 00 buck is your best option for home defense applications. As discussed above, it will penetrate walls. However, you can expect your shot pattern to be roughly the size of a grapefruit at 25 feet, and about the size of a bowling ball, if that, at 50 feet. It does not have the five foot by five foot spread that some suspect.
You mean they don't blow a giant fucking hole in the wall like in the movies? I have a shotgun for home defense that I also use for varmint hunting. I use 4 buck for coyotes, and whatever else I have laying around for other critters. If someone ever comes in my house lookin' for a rapin' and a killin' they'll get whatever is in the gun at the time, whether it's buckshot or birdshot. I have 8 shot in there right now, which would be pretty damn painful. Usually the sound of a shotgun cocking is terrifying enough to make an asshole change his mind anyway.
Not to take away from Iguana's stellar work, but he hadn't posted when I ordered my holster from someone else. It's a bullhide leather convertible OWB/IWB custom holster for the P7M8 my dad gave to me. The matching belt is amazing, and I'm thoroughly impressed at the workmanship. PM me if anyone wants his contact info, he's about 4-6 weeks out right now. Worth the wait! In other news, I've noticed some rust on one of the mags. Any tips to get it out?
Drop some gun oil on it (any light oil, really) and gently rub it out with #0000 steel wool. A little paste wax afterwards wouldn't hurt. PS nice gun and holster!
I've heard this numerous times, not trying to be a smart ass but do you not keep one chambered and hope the sound scares them off? What if you don't have time to rack one, or in the heat of the moment you forget you don't have one in the chamber? Once again I ask those in all seriousness, not trying to be an ass. I keep a SxS coach loaded with 00, if you are in my house when you aren't supposed to be my goal sure as hell isn't to change your mind.
You really shouldn't do that. I never sleep with a round in the chamber so when I wake up all groggy and squinty-eyed, I don't accidentally shoot an innocent person (or myself). When you're awakened suddenly, you're usually confused and it takes a few seconds to get your shit together before you can make a clear conscious decision. Anyone who has to make the decision to use lethal force should be wide awake. I also like the option of using the cocking of the shotgun as part of the escalation of force, if needed.
The guns in my house are always loaded, but never chambered. Having the gun ready to fire at all times could lead to accidents. If someone surprises me to the point that I can't grab a gun and rack it, I'm already at a severe disadvantage and the moment or so it takes to chamber a round is not going to nullify that.
