Can anyone tell me a little more about this gun? About all I know is it's a Marlin octagon barrel 30/30. I found a website that says the serial number is from 1897. Here's a few crappy pics. I'm not much of a gun guy.

I know the 336 Marlin Octagon has a 20 inch barrel, and if it's in good shape worth a decent amount of coin.

EDIT: The more I think about it I believe the 336 might have been produced later, early 70's I think, in which case I haven't helped at all.

I think it may be a Marlin 1893. If you have access to the gun there are more stamps on the metal that will identify it.

Yeah I was thinking it was an 1893 also. I am hesitant to post the serial number online. It's at my moms house so I'll go take another look at it for markings.

I'm starting work on a new stock for my Suhl 150 .22 benchrest rifle. New design and everything. My wood choices for this one are curly maple and curly cherry with a whole lot of carbon fiber.

    Oh hell yes.

I bought the maple at a local lumber yard for a steal and the cherry board came from a barn on my grandpa's farm. He cut the tree on his farm many years ago.

It will end up a lot like last year's stock, with some slight changes in the wood layup and shape.

Went old school yesterday and shot a black powder rifle that has been on the wall for years, was a little apprehensive on the first shot but went with 45 grains of powder and it went well so went to 75 on the next round. Very cool to hear the percussion cap go boom and then the powder ingnite. This is CVA 45 cal, it puts down wine bottles at 50 yards dead on.

I got a new front rest for shooting benchrest rifles. Picked up a Caldwell Rock BR rest, painted it black, and I swapped the cheap Caldwell windage top with a Greenlaw windage top I bought last year. Now I have the heavy, huge (super stable) Rock BR base with a smooth operating top. Can't wait to shoot with it!

Anecdotal info only: I went to one of the local gun shows about 5-6 weeks ago, and have been in and out of several local gun shops since then. Either nobody had AR-15's or the one or two they did were crazy pricing. Stopped into On the Square Guns in McDonough, GA this afternoon and they had rows of 'em. Several had colorful stickers on the price tags, and I joking said to the guy "The stickers are showing all the prices marked up, hun." "No, marked down," he said. I didn't look closely or know what I was looking at, but they were all "marked down" to $1900. He said they had some back down to $1500. Again, no idea what was what, but the fact that the stock is up and the prices are headed well below what I had been seeing is a good sign, I think.

Doesn't do much good if I can't find the ammo to shoot with. Academy is limiting to 1 box of ammo per customer per day. The guy at Academy said they have 20-30 people lined up every morning to buy ammo. The local pawn shop I go to had a shipment of 20 cases of 9mm with 10 boxes to a case. The owner hadn't even opened up any of the cases to stock up and one guy came in and bought all 20 cases for $30 a BOX. Yes, you read that right. He spent $6k in ammo.

The panic buyers are idiots. I'm still paying $210 for a 1000 round case of 9mm and $280 for .223. For the most part, the wholesale price hasn't increased. Get a couple buddies and go in together on a large purchase (10k+ rounds).

The silver lining to the price spikes will be this summer when all the retards who rushed out to the gun store in December need to make their mortgage payments and start unloading their new rifles at absurdly low prices. I've been going on sites like VAGunTrader and copying down screen names of the people gouging prices on rifles. For instance, one guy had 5 brand new LaRue OBR's going for $9,000 each. I've set my notifications to email me when he has a new post on there, waiting for the price to drop below the $3,300 MSRP. I'd be willing to bet I take one off his hands for under $2,500.

Just be patient. You'll probably find awesome deals on BCM, LMT, LaRue, Knights Armament, Noveske, and all the other high end AR brands in about 5 to 8 months.

The ammo hoarding is ridiculous. Can't get a 500-round bulk pack of crappy .22 ammo on Gunbroker for less than $50! I stopped by a gun shop recently and the only rimfire ammo they could get from CCI for the year is just three cases of .22 Long ammo.

I hope the mania ends soon otherwise my shooting habit is going on a serious diet. If you are buying Eley Tenex because it's the only thing left in stock, fuck you.

WalMart in Eagan has the 333 round box of Winchester .22 for $13 or $14. They were in stock on Monday when I was there.

I wonder when they got it in stock, and how long it'll last. Joe's in St. Paul is only going to have .22 Longs for awhile.

Re: Re: Guns and Ammo Thread

I'll second that, it's just stupid, I can't wait for the bubble to burst and these people will have rooms full of ammo that will be worth maybe 20 percent of what they paid for it.

Same goes for the scary black rifles, the only small sliver of a deal I have found is if your in the market for a good deer rifle, couple of shops around here have a decent selection for sale used.

I'm doing the same as The Dread Pirate and just waiting for the deals to start coming around.

My dad took advantage of this craze a little bit and unloaded his Springfield emp chambered in 9mm. The gun I think retails for around $1200. And for some reason a compact 9mm that looks like a 1911 is a hot little item right now.

When I was home in Florida last week, went to the gun show and tried to sell. All the dealers there wouldn't offer him more than $500 for it. It was fucking ridiculous and insulting. So last night, he went on gun broker and listed it with a buy now price of $1025. Someone bought it off him after one low ball bid.

One of the dealers said the the current value of the gun was only $795. I couldn't tell if he was lying. Either way, my dad is pretty stoked right now.

Re: Re: Guns and Ammo Thread

Yeah, it will be nice when all of these hoarding fuckwads are stuck with asspiles of ammo, but until that time it fucking sucks. I want to shoot. It's just not the same to show up at the range and yell "bang!"

Do you have a contact where I could get this many rounds? Hell if I could, I'd buy 2000 rounds right now just for myself to go shoot. At any given range visit I probably fire off 200-300 rounds from one of my 9mm guns alone. I ordered some 9mm Nato (500 rounds) from Cabelas for close to $200 because it was all they had. I've got a ton of friends who've expressed interest in going to shoot but I can never take them because there is never any ammo.

As far as the black rifles go, I've wanted another one for a while and refuse to pay the insane markup these guys are asking. I've got my BCM back ordered ($1050) so I'll just wait a few months for it to come in and not have to worry about the mark up on that or PMAGs (20 mags backordered which should be here soon). In the mean time if I can find another receiver or two I'll just build another AK to supplement what I already have.

Does anybody have a Kel-Tec Sub 2000 for Glock 19? I have two Glocks already and I have access to a LOT of 9 mm ammo at no cost to me. If I want a semi-auto rifle, this seems like an inexpensive way to go, especially since I can get the ammo so cheap. Where can I research the disadvantages of this type of weapon? (Like, I am guessing you obviously lose range and accuracy vs a 223 rifle round, but what else?) Are there other better alternatives for a 9mm type than the Kel-Tec? I notice that some lines have been discontinued, like the Marlin Camp 9 and that sort of thing.
