Damn, there are models to choose between. I am not sure how to ask him without making it obvious that I plan on buying a gun for him. This task just got a little more difficult. Thanks for the links y'all, I appreciate all the info.
Does anyone know where to get a slug barrel for an 870 for a decent price? I've been looking around and I'm having a tough time finding one for less than $150-$200, which is about what I paid for the gun.
The Weather Warrior series looks like it would fit the bill. For pure function, a synthetic stock coupled with a stainless barrel and action is tough to beat. It's not as traditional as some would prefer, but frankly, that isn't where the industry is going. Do not buy a rifle and scope combo. Let the husband pick out and buy his own optics, as there are too many options and price points for you to make the decision and generally, the quality of package deals may fall below his expectations.
Have you tried a local gun shop? One of the places that I frequent has dozens of barrels just laying on the shelf. Some are new, most are used.
This is the best place I've found online, but they're still in that price range. I'm with gators, check a local store. Or, just buy another gun that has the barrel you want if they're that close in price.
You can also use Mossburg barrels which will fit the Remington. I found mine at a local gun show for about $75. It makes a Frankengun, but the price was right at the time.
If you subscribe to facebook there are a ton of gun groups which I'm a member of which always sell a random assortment of shit. You can find ANYTHING gun related on facebook whether it's ammo, optics, or even a barrel.
Awhile ago I posted a photo of a fine .700 H&H single shot rifle. Well, last week I got to handle it and a few other rifles that had previously been reserved for my dreams in a private collector/dealer's vault. Spoiler Rifle in the center here is a heavily customized Winchester 52B .22, and is my favorite rifle in the entire world I've ever laid my eyes and hands on. A 10-bore double rifle dwarfs a trim .303 double. There were a couple 8-bore doubles in the vault and a 4-bore too.
Picked up a new deer killer this weekend. Ruger Super Blackhawk 44 magnum. Now I need to find some decent optics for it.
I need this. Spoiler Fuck that shit. Looks like I'll be hunting deer opener with this stock on my Winchester 70 if I can continue working at this pace. In these photos the entire thing is assembled with the magazine box and follower in place, and it feeds/functions as slick as it should. The moment when you can bolt the entire thing together (with all the parts) and cycle four rounds out of the magazine is a wonderful turning point in a stock project.
Does anyone have any experience with crossbows? I'm mainly interested in just shooting at targets with them, and doing the occasional varmint hunting. I love the idea of more challenge with a bow, but I like the longer range and the rifle setup of the crossbow. Seems like a perfect compromise.
Re: Re: Guns and Ammo Thread Crossbows today are nasty compared to what they were 10 years ago, that said how long range are you wanting to go?
Re: Re: Guns and Ammo Thread Yeah those AR based ones are sick as fuck but require special bolts they charge out the ass for. I have a pretty old one with a shitty sight set up it's pretty useless past 35 yards or so. The pull strength is nasty though and I've shot entirely through deer with it.
Re: Re: Guns and Ammo Thread I just want to have fun with it. I'd like to max out the Kentucky windage on a standup deer target, red dot sight mounted, just to see what I could do. Real world, shooting armadillo, fox, and coyote on a bait pile max of 40-50 yds would be the furthest I'd push it. I always shoot for the drop dead shot, not simply "something that kills it." I've just gotten kinda jaded with rifles as this point. To me, there's no "sport" in it anymore which seems unfair. You bait, you shoot, you kill, end of story. I'm guessing this is what happens when you shoot an AR-15 for an extended length of time. I just want to know what I need (financially) to get into basic crossbow hunting, what the (reasonable) maximum effective range is that I can expect, and any cautionary tales that anyone can impart.
Re: Re: Guns and Ammo Thread There's a world of shit that you can do with a rifle that you haven't discovered. Frankly, you sound like a pool player who is good enough to lose.
Re: Re: Re: Guns and Ammo Thread Then why not get into bow hunting? Frankly crossbows are pretty similar when it comes to rifles, point and shoot for the most part. Shooting smaller game at 50 yards with a bow however is much more of a challenge.
Re: Re: Guns and Ammo Thread Go back to squirrel hunting with a .22 and shoot for their heads. Maybe the little bastards around here are especially paranoid, but it is a hell of a lot more sporting than stand hunting deer to me. Or maybe you could give competitive shooting a try if you're so good. I have made a few nice walnut/carbon fiber laminate blanks this year for target shooters around the US and just got a photo back from one project. Before I chopped up and epoxied this nice hunk of Oregon walnut with carbon fiber: After I sent it to a stockmaker in Pennsylvania (the wood is unfinished but wet):
