Here's a couple of gunmaking videos... first, a tour of the modern Kelbly facility- makers of world-class benchrest and F-class target rifles: Now turn back time about 50 years and tour the Anschutz factory in Germany. From carbon steel and walnut to stainless steel and carbon fiber. Fascinating stuff, if you ask me. I'll also go ahead and say the stock I'm putting on my Winchester 70 is looking damn sexy. Spoiler I've started inletting the steel buttplate, which is someting most custom stockmakers will charge at least $200 to fit. I can tell you why: they are a massive pain in the ass. They are shaped like a Pringles chip except with a spur at the top, and it takes only three hand tools to do the job but hours of repetitive checking, fitting, and removing only slivers and shavings of wood at a time. At least two, if not three nights' work for me to get the job done. All of that said, man they look so good! With the buttplate 95% fitted, I can remove the majority of excess wood around the butt and through the grip- it is a lot slimmer now and I love it not feeling like a club. I've moved the comb nose back 1/4" to better align with the grip cap and then moved the front edge of the cheekpiece back 1/4" so the comb fluting won't crowd the cheekpiece. I've also taken about 1/8" off the underside of the fore-end so it is more tapered and follows the bottom metal better. I located the buttplate so the stock has 3/16" of cast-off with the same amount of toe-out and 1/8" of pitch, so it fits me perfectly. 1/8" here and 1/4" there may not be much, but it all adds up to a much better looking and handling stock. I can shoulder the rifle like a shotgun with my eyes closed and open them to see the crosshairs dead on, and that is the goal.
Here's a cute girl (Kirsten Weiss, Team Lapua) shooting a tricked out Anschutz 2013 rifle. Enjoy. That walnut/carbon fiber stock a few posts up is now finished, with a brand new Myers single shot rimfire action and 26" long, .9" diameter Shilen barrel sitting in it. Spoiler Not your average .22. I think the owner is putting a Leupold 40x scope on it. The Myers action was designed by a Virginia rimfire gunsmith named Bill Myers. It combines some of the best features of the Remington 40X and Winchester 52 actions plus some of his innovations. He started working on it a decade ago and made a couple of prototypes but passed away before it could go into production. I spoke with him on the phone a few times when I was just getting into benchrest shooting and making stocks for target rifles, and he was very helpful and patient with my questions. He surprised me by buying a blank from me but soon afterwards couldn't keep working due to his cancer, and never ended up doing anything with it. It makes me really happy to eventually see the results of his work with mine. I don't make much money from making blanks, but playing a part in the building of custom rifles like this makes it all worthwhile.
Nothing sells anything faster than a hot girl with a banging set of titties. Im still skeptical she made that shot seeing as they didn't show any angle of her actually hitting it and the way she was jittering while upside down...
True, but her marksmanship record speaks for itself: <a class="postlink" href="http://www.lapua.com/en/lapua-team/lapua-team-usa.html?team=39" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://www.lapua.com/en/lapua-team/lapu ... ml?team=39</a> (I think she hit it and the cameraman was just focused on her).
I did some covert info seeking from el husband's buddy. With the info I had, he was able to do some thinking and give me some options. I am looking for either a 11/111 long range hunter or 11/111 fcns, both .308WIN, savage rifles. Looks like the long range hunter is a bit more accurate, but it's also pricier. I have been doing a little searching on those links y'all gave me earlier in this thread. Any other tips on getting a deal on one of these? I am not opposed to buying used if it is in great shape. And when I get home I'll have the time to visit physical shops who might give a discount for cash, too.
I got to clean, photograph, and shoot a very nice Krag Model 1899 Carbine last night. It was made in 1901 and looks phenomenal, but shoots poorly. More pics. Spoiler My Winchester 70 is also ready for deer opener with its new custom stock: Spoiler I put a few quick coats of lacquer on the stock so it can be handled and sighted the rifle in. The finish isn't pretty but is functional. I was shooting Hornady 130 gr. SST Light Mag ammunition and shot this 3-shot group at 50 yards while sighting in the rifle last night: I'll be adding some screw-in swivel studs before this weekend so I can use a sling with the rifle. After deer hunting I will strip the stock, add inletted swivel studs and finish some detail shaping, then color, re-finish and checker it. While finishing I need to polish and blue the stock hardware too.
I have been up for 29 hours so forgive me if my memory is off... Isn't your hubby military? If he is, make sure to mention that and bring proof, you will likely get a little better deal. Now that I know what model/caliber, I'll see if I can find one in my area and see if I can get something worked out.
We have gone to gun shops in Texas and Louisiana, and we will be headed to shops in Alabama next week. Different stores have different policies. Seems like the smaller/local shops offer cash and occasional military discounts (one shop only offered mil discount on the police only firearms) so I will have to see. El husband seemed very interested in some of the lower models that savage had that were cheaper, but I know he would love the ones I mentioned too. My ideal price range would be something in the 400s since optics will be pricey too. I basically told him to stop spazzing out over this because I was planning on doing something for him, so he's seemed to back off a little. I dunno...at this point maybe I should just have him help since the cat's pretty much out of the bag at this point. I have seen, touched, and talked about so many guns this past week (ps- m4's are amazing to shoot and I want one). All I can do is cling to the name of certain models because I know so little about all this stuff.
I have a Glock 23 Gen4 sitting at the FFL now paid for in full. I just have to go through the absurdly time consuming and repetitive NC Military pistol buying process. It's not like handling fire arms is in my job description or anything...
Eh, fuck it. He got this.<a class="postlink" href="http://www.jgsales.com/cai-centurion-39-ak-style-rifle,-7.62x39,-milled-receiver,-usa-mfg,-new.-p-4272.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://www.jgsales.com/cai-centurion-39 ... -4272.html</a> Gun's pricier than I would have liked but the ammo is way cheap.
So I have a genuine question for you guys. If you have a handgun/revolver would you take it into someone's house/care without telling them? I full respect the right to bear arms, however, when it comes to my car/apartment I'd like to be aware if anyone has them. Is this over the top? Recently my old roommate brought a revolver into my apartment and I told him he could have it here so long as it was unloaded.
Was it loaded and concealed on his person? If so does he have a CCP? Or did he just stroll in with it loaded and start waving it about?
It was loaded, it was in one of his travel bags. I started telling an anecdote relevant to this and he was told me about his firearm. I told him he could have it here so long as it wasn't loaded. Because of my preference he pulled out the revolver from the case in his bag and emptied it. I'm hoping he had a CCP but I really don't know. He didn't have to tell me about this, he could've lied and I wouldn't have known, but I'm glad he was honest with me. Remember too, this is a friend of mine who was staying with me for a few days.
If it's your place and you have a issue with it being loaded in your home then by all means he should comply with your request. How comfortable are you with firearms in general? Or do you just have an issue with it being loaded?
I'm fine with firearms, I've shot in the past and will in the future. I have no problems with rifles and shotguns, but handguns and revolvers are a bit controversial with me. It doesn't bother me he had one, it did bother me it was fully loaded. I just didn't see a reason to have a loaded firearm in my small, safe studio apartment.
Then the bottom line is it's your home, your rules, sounds like he didn't have an issue with it. I wouldn't bring a loaded firearm inside someone's home without knowing before hand if it was ok. That being said my Grandfather always said if there are guns in the house one better be yours, something I tend to agree with.
Grr. Well, I would have loved to save an extra 200....but this was all his responsibility. He only searched for a couple days. I am going to mention it to him but not push for a return. After paying to ship it back and the restocking fee, there wouldn't be much savings. He has already been having dreams of going shooting with this gun. He wants it right meow. Is this a gun that you have or what? I spent a lot of time looking for the cheapest 308 but when he decided to look at a completely different gun I was over it. I will be more on top of it next time.
