Sunday Evening Amateur Gun Porn: Mosin-Nagant Edition Spoiler For the 75th anniversary of the outbreak of the Russo-Finnish Winter War (November 30th 1939 - March 13th 1940), here are two service rifles from that conflict. First is a Finnish Model 1927 infantry rifle made in 1933 by Tikka (sort-of), and second is a Soviet Model 1891 infantry rifle made in 1920 at Tula Arsenal. The Soviet rifle was captured by the Finns during the war, and pressed into service against its former owners.
I thought I liked the look of the carry handle, and before I picked this one up, I thought I'd add that. But, I really like this Magpul MBUS rear flip up sight. I think I'll put that grand in ammo for now . . . It's been a looong time since I've had to buy any ammo. I have several boxes / bricks / baggies of .22LR that I haven't shot up. I have a "source" that stocked me with all the 9mm, .380 and .357 ammo I could ever shoot. And, when my dad died, I got all his cases of 12 ga field load. I don't deer hunt, so I can't remember the last time I've bought any rifle ammo. Do you guys shoot any steel cased ammo through an AR? The best I can tell, from reading the whole internet (read: one article, one blog post, one forum discussion) is that it's fine for range stuff, you just need to make sure you clean & lube well. Is it fair to say that whether you go steel or brass, you want FMJ on the range and soft or hollow point for hunting/ SHTF/ protection? Also, the M&P 15 Sport I bought was the last one he had, and I guess he didn't rotate the stock. It's brand new, but it's not the current production model, as it has the older 1 in 8 twist with 5R rifling.
The only gun I've shot the steel cased Wolf crap through was a WASR AK-47. It is some dirty stuff. Not sure if other brands are better but if it were me and I had a nice shiny new rifle to enjoy, I would pay a few more cents per round to avoid it. But you should be fine if you take care with cleaning and maintenance and don't go overboard shooting it. Here's checkering an ebony buttplate in six photos. Spoiler 95% done. I'll finish it up after varnishing the stock.
I was looking at Monarch, not Wolf. Seems it is smelly, but not as dirty as Wolf. I'll probably buy several different boxes and run my own comparisons.
My local Wal Mart stocks brass-cased FMJ 5.56 regularly, so I just grab three boxes when I'm there. I have amassed a pretty good bit. Gun rant- my Weaver 4-12 is no longer holding zero and rebuilding it is cost prohibitive, since it also needs to be reblued as well as repaired and recharged. Gun rave- Leupold VX-2 3-9 x 50 is on the way.
Nice. A buddy has one of those on his Remington 700 .30/06 and I am a big fan. Should buy you some daylight over the Weaver.
The Weaver was a really good scope. I'm excited about the new Leupold though. It should be a lot of fun. Also, that Sako is a tack driver.
I have a HAMR + Deltapoint on my AR, Leupold makes some pretty awesome optics. Enjoy yours. On another note, I pulled the trigger on a Sig Tacops carry yesterday. Hopefully it'll get here by Friday so I can shoot it soon. Just have to find a good holster for it, might replace my Glock 23 as my carry.
I have a Mark AR Mod 1 on my AR. It has the firedot reticle. It's no HAMR, but it's still a lot of fun. Super long eye relief.
Brass vs. Steel ammo test. Essentially, they found that while you will see faster wear and a drop in accuracy due to corrosive primers and bimetal bullets, the savings over noncorrosive primers/brass cases will pay for a new upper. Also, the lacquer on the steel cases can/will gum the chamber. If you decide to go that route, I'd keep an upper for hunting/SHTF/protection and a separate upper for the range. What's the twist rate on your barrel? I've found PMC (South Korean made) ammo fine for the range and adequate for anti-social work. You can usually find it online reasonably priced at http://www.cheaperthandirt.com, http://www.aimsurplus.com, etc
That's a great link, thank you. And my barrel has a 1 in 8 twist, 5R. It's my understanding, and as shown on S&W website that the current Sport is 1 in 9.
I forgot to add the reason why I asked about your twist rate; The rate will drive bullet choice. I've read better explanations, but this article does explain it: Bullet vs. barrel twist. While I agree with I'd rather over stabilize than under stabilize, I disagree with the authors' downplay of potential over-stabilization issues. Ballistic tests have debunked loss of accuracy myths, but the centrifugal force can cause jacket failure with lightweight bullets. With a 1 in 8 50-75gr should work just fine. I usually shoot 55gr or 62gr. On a side note; if .22lr ever returns to shelves in large quantities and drops in price, check out drop in .22lr conversion kits. They're finicky and not inexpensive, but until .22lr availability & prices went sideways I liked my drop in conversion bolt.
You can buy a Ruger 10/22 for about the price of a conversion kit and have two rifles. My son turns 18 at the end of the month and I just bought him one with a synthetic stock for $199.00. I cannot wait for him to open it and we can go plinking.
True, but you can you fit the Ruger 10/22 with 200rds in a pocket? Its certainly not for everyone, but I like it for it's value in a SHTF scenario.
I'd rather have the rifle built for the round and with a proper twist rate and bore diameter too. Granted, I like 10/22s too and good for you Puffman- that's an awesome gift. A roommate just brought a couple guns from home for me to clean and inspect. A Remington 722 in .300 Savage (awesome) and a Dumoulin Model 1908 16 gauge sidelock shotgun (incredible). The shotgun is a wallhanger (typical pre-WW1 Belgian that shows its age) but is the first sidelock I've been able to take apart and look over, and I love it. I have big hands but these locks just seem tiny too. I suspect this 16 was built on a 20 gauge frame, which makes it even more appealing. There's a few mechanical fixes that could be made, as in the release lever spring is missing and a replacement firing pin was made from a nail, and oh yeah the stock is busted in half, but I've wanted to get my hands on a double gun like it for a long time.
I'm interested in what people EDC. Here is my setup. NiB Glock 19. Bone stock other than upgraded target tritium sights carried in a White Hat horse leather holster Leatherman Wave Titanium lock picks Fenix LD20 flashlight (I LOVE this thing. It's been literally thrown in a river and has seen so much abuse in the past 3 years I've had it) Extra 15 round mag full of 135gr +p
Since I can't carry a gun in my building, I just pack knives. A Buck 112 A Kershaw folder A heavy duty mora knife that I keep clipped to my bag hidden under the flap. Its a general survival knife with a ridiculously heavy blade.
Depends on what I'm doing, but it's either a S&W Bodyguard .380, or a Kahr CW40. Both carried appendix in one of the Kydex holsters I make, or the Kahr at 3:30 in one of my Leather/Kydex Hybrids, and a Zero Tolerance 566 in my front pocket.
