One time I clicked on a video someone said was funny, but it started, and there was a black guy. So I closed it right away. Spoiler
It's not just light or dark that does it for me. It's COLD. I am not an ale guy. Warm and beer go together like bicycle shorts and fat people.
That's a good way to put it. Guinness is like the Budweiser of dark beers. Not the best, but certainly better than a lot of brews out there. When my girlfriend started dating me she hated beer, but now she loves lighter ales and amber/brown ales and will even try sip or two of my stouts and porters without cringing. But- she still won't touch Guinness.
Oh man. So when I was in college, I used to play alot of shows. Including an open mic every Wed at my favorite bar. One of the regular performers was Mission Man. Older, fairly awkward white dude, graduated I think 4 years before me, so he'd be in his early 30s now. He was a rapper, but I use that term loosely. He had two degrees but worked at Papa Johns, was trying to make his music thing happen. Laid down his own tracks, produced it, rapped. He used to set up alot of shows, charity and otherwise, that were actually well attended and that I got pretty good spots playing. But the problem is...he is HORRIBLE. I mean, I'm talking about one of the worst total performers I've ever heard. I still am friends with him on FB and he hustles hard. Books a bunch of small shows throughout the Midwest, relentless self-promotion. But he's quit his job to do this full time. Well he just dropped a music video for a song he is really proud of and the video is one of his "crowning achievements"... I just can't...
Guinness can't be called the abortion of dark beers. Have you tried the shit that comes out of Quebec?
Re: Re: Happy Cold Fold Festival (China) Drunk Thread All of you beer snobs need to relax, it's BEER for fucks sake, it may be middle of the road stout but fuck if I don't drink the shit outta it. Just had a few pints of this weekend poured by a bartender who actually knew the right way to pull a pint, unfortunately I can't afford it much anymore. Milwaukee's Best Ice is what I have been drinking lately, 11.50 for a case, guess what? Not a bad beer at all.
Two things: 1. If there are no flying cows, it is not an actual tornado. I learned this from Helen Hunt. 2. Once you've uttered the phrase "I think it's coming this way", I think the appropriate course of action in a tornado is to shut off the camera, grab your dog and head for Auntie Em's cellar.
Re: Re: Happy Cold Fold Festival (China) Drunk Thread A case of what, six? There's not a single beer in Toronto that is less than $1.25 per unit, from the Beer Store. You probably pay less than we pay for Molson Canadian.
Re: Re: Happy Cold Fold Festival (China) Drunk Thread You're right, its not a bad beer, its probably the worst beer out there. I could be an alcoholic with the shakes and I wouldn't touch that crap. Hell, even when I was 18 in college I would't drink that stuff, however I'd drink warm Colt 45. Any beer with ice or high gravity after the name is an automatic no go.
Guinness has been made for 300 years; a real tradition. Quite possibly, Guinness is the proto-ale, period. The ale from which all modern ales arose. It is a simple, elegant dark beer, made with quality grains. Budweiser is made from the cheapest ingredients available like rice. The only thing going for Bud is the untouchable quality of their brewmasters. The best in world to attain 100 million gallons of consistency. Lots of people, lots of girl, hate Guinness. It has a decent coffee flavor, slightly bitter, very smooth, very light. It is the color that throws people. They automatically assume it's going to be heavy sludge. Anyone looking for something kinky, get your hands on Cigar City out of Tampa. Their Maduro brown ale is the best of that style. Tastes like a roasted grains, leather, a hint of smoke. Out of the can, yes, the can, it is phenomenal. Better than the bottle. Tastes like shit on tap. No idea what happened there (probably dirty lines, a big problem lately). Hell, that whole brewery is doing outstanding things.
Re: Re: Re: Happy Cold Fold Festival (China) Drunk Thread 24 cans, 5.9% ABV. It's strange, I wouldn't touch the shit in college but now I actually like it.
This is one thing I keep hearing too. "You gotta go try it at the brewery!" Well I will whenever I'm in Ireland. I'm not trying to go all beer snob on ya. We have a LOT of great craft breweries around here so I enjoy those first, but I'll still drink anything you put in front of me (with few exceptions). For the record Hamm's is my go-to... $15 for a 30-pack makes my wallet happy. As far as dark beers go I'll have Guinness if it's the only one on tap (and will pick it over a local EPA, etc) but I prefer many of the other stouts and porters out there.
Cigar City is legit. When I lived in Tampa I visited it a few times, it pretty much stands toe to toe with the big microbrews (Bells, Stone, etc) Maduro was always my favorite. If you're in Tampa hit up the brewery, its in a sketch part of town (but most of Tampa is sketchy so whatever) and go chill there. Its small, and the brewers will shoot the shit with you. Guinness at the Guinness factory is vastly different. I've been in Dublin, I've got my photo in front of St. James gate, and I've done the gravity bar. Its just better there. Kind of like how I imagine getting a Green Flash beer in London would taste different than getting it off the tap in SD.
Damn now I would drink Hamms if I could get it, didn't know they still made it. Here in Charlotte there are only 2 or so craft brewers. Old Meck is great, they will fill your growler for a decent price, more places are carrying craft beer on tap which is nice. Had some milk stout a few weeks ago and it was fantastic.
We have nine breweries in the Twin Cities I can readily name, plus an awesome place near my hometown with a rich German heritage and style (Schell). Lots of bars have the local stuff on tap too. I think the Twin Cities is an underrated beer area. Hamm's is still great! I have tried many other cheap cases and keep coming back to Hamm's.
We are the recent proud recipients of Corona Light on tap. The women in AZ walk around with very little clothing on so we have to keep our beer as close to water as we can so as to not make them unviewable, plus you can drink it all day with no negative effects, like a buzz.
If you're in Ontario, check out mill street's cobblestone stout. It's a nitrogenated stout like Guinness but for my money it's better.
