Headed to Chicago tomorrow. Anywhere I should eat/anything I should do? Preferably places that aren't super fancy.
Re: Re: Holiday Drunk Thread Ed Debevic's. loved it. It's an old-style diner downtown and the staff is intentionally rude to you. Food was decent if I remember. But the staff is the draw. The waiter only called my wife "princess" and left the table in the middle of my order to text somebody. Sometimes they force you to stand on your seat to do impromtu karaoke. But they still serve you well, it's part of the act. I heard there's another place similar to it.
Re: Re: Re: Holiday Drunk Thread Never got the appeal of those places, if I wanted to listen to a woman be rude while serving me food I'd ask my wife to cook me dinner.
It sounds ridiculous but in the Macy's on State Ave there is a famous Ramen shop. They are only open for lunch m-f. Its on the 7th floor, Noodles by Takashi Yagihashi. You can also go to his other restaurant The Slurping Turtle. http://slurpingturtle.com/home.php I live in Indiana and drive up several times a year just for noodles. At the turtle try the Tonkotsu, or the Duck Fat Fried Chicken.
Re: Re: Holiday Drunk Thread Only in the confines of Wrigley. Its great at a Cubs game but tastes like ass anywhere else. Are you going to be right downtown? Chicago is a food mecca these days, almost anything you can imagine done well. Silway's ramen calls are good. Heaven on Seven just off Michigan Avenue is awesome Cajun food. Brazilian steakhouses like Fogo De Chao or Brazzas are great, or Zed 451, but its a bit pricier. No offense Crown, but Ed Debevics is cheesy tourist shit. There are 50 better places to get a burger. Try to catch a show at Second City, I feel like it would be up your alley. Skip the Sears Tower, if you want an awesome view, go to the Signature Room on the 95th floor of the Hancock, grab a drink and see a much cooler view without the tourist nonsense. Given that the weather sucks, I'd recommend the Shedd Aquarium or Field Museum. The Museum of Science and Industry is also real badass, but its a bit south of downtown.
Re: Re: Re: Holiday Drunk Thread Yea there's a place called Dick's Last Resort like that around here. I guess I wasn't really charmed by it? I don't really like people being mean to me, mostly because it always felt like out of work actors doing bad improv. But maybe.
Re: Re: Holiday Drunk Thread I'll probably spend some time in the city, but I'll be staying around...Andersonville? Is that right? Considering Second City, so that was a good call. It seems like the weather might be kind of shitty though, which would suck. I don't really know the geography super well, but I think the reception I have to be at on Saturday is downtown, so I could do that kind of stuff earlier then.
I went to this pretty awesome Pizza place during my short stay in Chicago. No idea what part of Chicago it was, but it took about 45 minutes-1 hour to make, but I can say it was easily worth the wait. Best pizza I've ever had.
Re: Re: Holiday Drunk Thread Yeah I was only there for St. Pat's weekend and we had to see as much as possible. I went in the subway to try and fuck with the Lords Of Hell but no dice. I like the pizza a lot, I do know that for sure. Yes it's creepy, dense and looks like compost but I thought it was rad.
You he doesn't actually live in Chicago right? He'd have to fly in from LA for the dick jokes to commence.
I was hoping someone with better knowledge could provide more information. Obviously there's a ton of pizza places, but I've never really heard of them taking 45 minutes to cook. That's not a thing here in Australia.
New plan: Go into every pizza place in the city and order a pizza. If it comes out in less than 45 minutes, shrug, say "never mind" and walk out.
Andersonville is in "the city" don't get this shit confused with New York, when you talk about the city in Chicago, you're talking about the entire city. What you might call "the city" is what we call "downtown." Technically, the city of New York is all five boroughs, but when people say "going to the city" in New York, you're talking Manhattan. You say that in Chicago, people think you're talking about the suburbs, which leads to all sorts of judgement and preconceived notions. If you're talking Chicago's style pizza, you have to get to Lou Malnati's or Giordano's (I lean more towards Giordano's for actually stuff crust pizza), Gino's East downtown is passable but its tourist stuff. If you want to catch a great burger, I suggest DMK Burger Bar or Kuma's Corner (wait times can be a bitch though for Kuma's). If you're up in Andersonville, which is like 5 minutes north of me, catch breakfast at Ann Sathers. Also, you'll be surrounded by lesbians so you'll love love that. 10 minutes south of you is Wrigleyville, our frat/party/tourist spot where you can drink your face off, and also to the East of Wrigleyville is Boystown, where you can party your face off with gay men. Second City is a must. If that is too busy, Zanies Comedy club is usually a hit and always has something going on. If you ever want to explore and be around hipsters just say "Wicker Park" or "Big Star" and people will direct you.
