So which paper uses the headline "She shopped 'til he dropped" first?

He shouldn't have been so hard on her. She was relieving mental stress via "Consumer Therapy". Don't men realize the only way to relieve stress is the blow the grocery money on Uggz?

Five hours of being a run-around butler at this time of year... You almost can't blame him. There must be some sort of contest men are secreted from where whichever woman owns the most shoes when they all die is declared "The Winner."

Its funny, because some guys say they'd rather kill themselves than be somewhere any longer, I guess this guy wasn't fucking around.

Chinese relationships are fucking weird. The nature of the culture kind of fosters co-dependence pretty badly. On one hand the girls treat you like the good ole days of the 50's where they cater to your every whim and worried when you don't complement their coffee or can't get out the ring around the collar. It was odd and oddly refreshing (couldn't handle it long term though since you need some space sometimes…). It really made the girls lack the independent spirit you find in western girls. They also all had expectations that you'd marry them sooner rather than later and pushed this HARD. Most expats would just string a couple along at a time. This is part of the reason I called Shanghai college 2.0 as most guys, young to middle ages professionals, would revert back to bro dude college behavior. Chinese guys on the other hand would latch on to girls and become co-dependent as well but would go to totally emasculating lengths to woo and shower girls with attention. Thus created relationships where shit like this can happen. It worked both ways depending on who "wore the pants" in the relationship. Obviously for the jumper his girl was.

I could spend all day reading/learning/hearing stories about relationships/courting/dating in other cultures. That shit is consistently fascinating.

How intense do the Chinese women come on to you? Is it like after one date its constant texting calling?

I only dated one Chinese girl semi seriously. She never got too attached because she caught on that I didn't have a job or career path and she moved on to the next guy who would marry her. I think it was the second or third time we hung out when she first mentioned marriage. The expectation was that you'd marry them and raise them above the poorness they fled the countryside for. This is why I mentioned Chinese dudes would get bitchy with westerners. All of the women move to the big cities and look for a well off westerner to marry off to. You add that to the disparity of men to women there and you get the issues they are having. The worst I got was just death stairs and mean words I couldn't understand if we were walking down the street. I knew guys that really got into it with jealous Chinese dudes.

I saw a documentary on the amount of single guys in China and how fierce the competition was. And all I thought was, "I could go to your country and buy myself what you could never have. And I could fuck her proper."

    I'm a bad person, right?

I know China has a serious surplus of men for obvious reasons, and I've heard historically if there is a large population of young single dudes civil unrest isn't far behind. Makes sense that China is having issues.

Also maybe a reason they're so angry is that they have small weiners, I know that'd make me mad.

Hopefully they just kill each other instead of causing problems for other countries with their pent up frustration.

Saw it too on Vice. Women were judging men mostly on what they earn or what sort of parental inheritance from him they could cash in on. How wide-spread in China that actually is I have no idea, but the whole idea of marriages simply being business deals between two families is evil and sleazy to me.

Of course, this is the country that builds ghost towns designed to house five million. They are going to ruin society entirely with bullshit money bubbles like that.

I don't know, I have a hard time looking down at other countries' cultural practices when my country is responsible for this:

Depends on how the government handles it. They could focus the populations discontent outwards. Most of the time when something came up they just placated the aggrieved parties with token laws and handouts (or vowed to put to death the people guilty of selling tainted baby formula or reused sewage oil). They did pretty well squashing the "Jade Spring" that was supposed to catch fire during the Arab Spring which happened when I was there. The handful of protestors that did show up to protest were quickly silenced by heavy handed police tactics and numbers.

But the culture is so focused on the state fixing the problems people just kind of blindly follow and trust the government. My brother worked in construction there and saw first hand the massive bubble that was being created with basically a free check to build anything and everything (creating the ghost cities). He'd constantly ask his Chinese coworkers what they thought would happen when the bottom falls out on that and the GDP eventually falls and doesn't show double digit increases year over year. The basic response was "the government will step in so we don't need to worry about it."

I think it all contributed to their codependent nature.

I'll second this. When I first arrived in China, I was approached pretty often by girls, under the disguise of "practicing their English". and then 5 minutes later, they're asking about my marital status. For me it seemed really chiché to date a native, mostly because I knew I was damaged goods and wasn't staying any longer than my 1 year contract. Also, there was the realization that no matter how hard i assimilated, learned the language, invested in the culture, I would always bee known as a waiguo(foreigner). So any female attention came off as disingenuous.

The college 2.0 is spot on as well. It seemed like every bar I went into, there was more recent grads from America with basically the same back-story as me, with little to no training, trying to figure out to teach a language that they were simply fluent in(it's a lot harder than it seems). It just made hooking up with the other ex-pats easier/less guilty feeling. Plus you didn't have to deal with a lot of broken English

I mean teaching English was for college grads who didn't know what to do with their lives and I could see them extending the party a few more years (sad to see 35+ year old teachers smoking weed and barring it every night). It was a trip to see business professionals partying to all hours of the night every night, who cared if they had family back home. It really was a insular bubble expats lived in.

When I was in Shanghai among expats, if you were dating or fucking western girls, you were seen as desperate. EVERYONE dated Asians, so much so that western girls were left in the lurch and would become desperate themselves. The dudes with foreign accents could clean up on the American girls if they had really wanted to.

Dudes with British, Irish, New Zealand, Australian or Scottish accents clean up in the states wholesale. Its like pussy catnip. Its the same both ways though. I once met a girl from New Zealand here and she was pretty 'n all, but once she opened her mouth, I was powerless.

I have to agree with Kubla on this majority of his post, because I am constantly immersed in this. I'm Korean American, but I think the qualities being discussed might be pretty similar in Easter Asian cultures. It is very strange to visit Korea and see a construct where a woman's social value is tied very much so to her ability to attract/marry/keep a husband. That pressure factors in with a lot of how Asian women behave in general, regarding beauty, weight, behavior, etc. As I grew up in the US with immigrant parents, it's almost gross to me to see how my parents interacted with each other, and how dependent on my father my mother was. When they separated, my mother lost her sense of self or any selfworth for years, and I think that is a direct effect of said dependence. It makes me angry beyond belief.

And then try to bring those social structures in the culture and bring them to the US, there are the Asian and non Asian men who want the idea of these dependent, submissive Asian girls (see 'oddly refreshing' above). Hoping this doesn't start an internet shouting match but I think that might be part of the reason why "Asian girl with nonAsian boy" is way more common that "Asian boy with nonAsian girl"; maybe Asian-American girls who were born and raised in Western/American culture have no interest in following in the dependent, clingy stereotype our parents want us to marry into. Don't get me wrong, there are plenty of Asian-American girls that DO partake in the stereotype, but I think it may (hopefully) be a dying breed in the next few generations. I might have zero basis for this, because I've never dated an Asian male, but that's because the ones I grew up with displayed that Dominant-because-I'm-the-man nonsense. I may have been a social outcast within the Korean groups my mom kept putting me in because I was mouthy as fuck and not subservient or girly in the least.

Or maybe I was just super ugly.
