Re: Re: Holiday Drunk Thread Was that because of her intergalactic brilliance as a performer or because she was shoe horned into the most popular sporting events on earth?
Re: Re: Holiday Drunk Thread Either way, a ton of people *watched* her. It might have something to do with the fact that she's sold 118 million cd's, including more than anybody else in the 2000s. Or that this latest album is projected to do 200,000 in three days? Wait, am I being trolled? I'm being trolled.
Whatever, nobody will ever top the Black Eyed Peas performance. They made Pink Floyd look like a fucking jam band. So epic. I wonder if Slash put a gun in his mouth after that show and at least THOUGHT about it.
Re: Re: Holiday Drunk Thread Meh, you're pimping a pop star on a board full of drunk idiots do you think everyone was just going to roll over and agree with your sentiments? She's more talented and more popular than the rest of the over produced pop that's out there today. Good for her. She's selling more than is the new standard in the music business these days which is commendable. I really don't see her music going down in the annals of music history as anything of particular note aside from the pure numbers. But maybe that's what today's pop music produces. #semitrolling
Re: Re: Holiday Drunk Thread She has some good songs and is a good performer. What I fail to see is why she is more popular than Destiny's Child was, because her music is NOT as good as it was with them. And it was nice of her to let those fans onstage to do DC songs with her at the Superbowl. I'm sure her bodyguards kept an eye on them.
Re: Re: Holiday Drunk Thread I'm not even pimping her, I don't think. I don't even listen to Beyonce, in fact. But the fact is, a ton of people do care about what she does. It was more like, "holy shit, one of the biggest stars in the world just dropped an album on a Friday morning without any warning, that's kind of weird." Much more interested in discussing this from a marketing/media standpoint.
Re: Re: Holiday Drunk Thread Just because people *watched* her doesn't mean it was a good performance. Pretty much all of the Super-Bowl halftime shows have been complete shit since Tom Petty, and he was pretty bland. Bruno Mars is playing this year so the trend of shittiness will continue. She's probably the most talented active musician in her genre, but as a performer I'd say she's experienced, not so much talented. The high viewership was probably because the primary demographics of people who watch football and people who listen to Beyonce are completely different so the viewership drew from a larger pool of people than a typical Beyonce concert. Fans of Beyonce watch the half time show because hey, free concert and football fans don't change the channel because who changes the channel during the Superbowl?
Since when is music all about the numbers? From my impression of music snobs, they always sneer a bit when people talk about records sold as a show of how good someone/a band is. Fuck, Nickleback has sold tons of records and are all over the radio. Does that mean they're good too?
Re: Re: Holiday Drunk Thread Sure. I'm just saying between album sales + sold out concerts + cultural impact + Superbowl, it's hard to argue that Beyonce isn't a big deal, even if you don't particularly care for her music. Hence my bringing up her innovative (in my memory, at least), release strategy. An album + 17 videos with no lead up is kind of crazy, especially with the kind of guest features she had.
Music isn't about the numbers. But the question, "who the fuck listens to Beyonce?" can be answered by numbers. Those numbers say "a lot of people, in a lot of demographics." Her strategy could very well impact the way other people (that you all respect more, or w/e) release. Or it might not. Either way, it's still a fairly important pop music event, as far as such things go.
Too soon to say. Feels more like a new gimmick that the record biz wants to try out hoping it'll stick and a new standard can be set. Not super close but there was a while the hip thing to do was release your album and ask fans to pay what they want for it, that really hasn't turned into a new standard. It's going to be really really hard to beat free.
Re: Re: Holiday Drunk Thread It's a rarity for a musician of her caliber to release an album unannounced but it isn't something that is new. I don't think it's a strategy that works in regards to moving units when you aren't in that group of artists who are near high on the charts. But it is something that tons of small-time musicians do.
There is no "really really hard" about it. It's not going to beat it. Until they figure out a way for everybody to pay for music again, free wins, and nobody is in second place. People will always want and feel entitled to free shit. And since music label companies are the greatest and most disgusting perversion ever to be released on pop-culture, their destruction is a win-win to a lot of people.
Re: Re: Holiday Drunk Thread Well, we do have a marketing professional that posts regularly here, but I'm thinking based on some of the previous posts you've made toward him he might be a little reluctant to chat with you. Wait, I know! Send him a boquet of roses to show him you're sorry for your previous unkind posts.
While you're all arguing about Beyonce when she isn't even in a thong, this woman has been eating her husband's cremated ashes. TLC is officially the Freak Show at the state fair. They've cornered that enviable market. And, really, thank God for that. Because I love seeing a morbidly obese woman phobic of eating vegetables. Things aren't so bad after all.
The only thing I've "learned" from TLC is what not to do with your life. It's what the people getting arrested on Cops do in the daylight.
Not particularly revolutionary, Zeppelin did something similar with their 4th Album. There were some advertisements, but they were only symbols (which had previously been unassociated with the band in any way). That album has no title, no writing, no song list on the outer sleeves. They essentially released it without their name or a title on it. Beyonce's album will sell because of who she is, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. I'm not a fan, per se, I think her songs are pedestrian, her voice is 'ok' and the 'live' shows aren't usually live - but to be fair, when you run around, do that many costume changes and dance non-stop, it's really fucking hard to sing. A lot of people seem to enjoy her music, and that's great, that's the whole point. I've heard some of her previous songs, and based on those, I'm not running out to buy it anytime soon. But hey, to each their own and if that's someone's thing, have at it, and enjoy.
So I tried this, and it works great. It doubles the sound of an iPhone and mine was in the protective case to boot.
