I rock climb religiously. Mostly sport and bouldering. I ice climb too, but not as much as it's all a fair drive away.
Climbing is an amazing all-body work out that doesn't feel like a work out. It exercises your mind because you need to really think about how to climb a route - technically and physically.

I snowboard as well but not nearly as much as I used to, it's gotten too expensive.

Climbing ain't cheap. I'm glad I have a good relationship here so that when I move on, I'll be able to get gear at cost instead of retail. ugh.

    Sport?
I wake up at 4 a.m. to lift weights, but I don't compete.
I love live and breath baseball in the spring, and would dearly love to play in a softball league next year if I can get my throw back.
When I had the free time to pole dance, that was something I wanted to chase more but ran out of time.
I loved climbing - back when I did it for recreation I climbed 20 hours a week or so.

    Running fucking sucks.

We have an awesome climb gym here in Houston but its expensive as fuck. I went a couple times and I actually overcame some fears. And I was sore as hell after. But I couldn't financially sustain going a lot. Sucks.

When you move to Fort Worth, let me know. I'll get the guys here to look out for you.

Climbing's a great work out. Kind of like dancing on the wall with your hands.

    Point:
    Counterpoint: Running doesn't suck.

I played baseball, football and ran track in highschool, and played all of that and more in intramurals in college and continued playing softball for a while after. Snow skiing is my favorite thing to do, but I don't get there often enough these days. (Not a lot of mountains or snow in Georgia . . .) But, I love running. I'm not fast, I don't compete, but I do it regularly. You don't have to get lots of fancy equipment, you can do it any time anywhere, and distance runs are a great way to clear your head / think about shit. For me, I have lots of injured, damaged, or broken parts, so a simple long run is something I can still do - lateral movement or quick cuts, and overhead arm movements are not really in my repertoire anymore.

For the record, on my regular running days, I run rain or shine, cold or hot, dark or light and I don't run in a group. And, I hate mud runs, color runs or whatever other trendy run things. I've only done two marathons and maybe 5 or 6 half marathons, but I run a handful of "organized" 5K and 10K races a year. The rest of the time, it's just me and the road. Treadmills do suck.

Running is awful for me, my ADHD just doesn't tolerate it. The only time I'll run is if a wild animal is chasing me or I'm training for hockey.

Getting into running shape sucks but once I'm there, I love an easy 3-5 mile run. My dog loves them too. Once I'm warmed up and "in the zone" I relax and go like I'm on cruise control. My own limit is a half marathon- that's the longest run I've done and I have no interest in doing it again.

Running isn't bad. Once I get past the suck point (somewhere in the 1/2-3/4 mile mark), my body and brain just goes on autopilot, kind of like Forrest Forrest Gump.

Running hills and sprints is fun. I like being challenged and part of the fun is the mental ping pong of "This sucks" vs "Shut up and run, you pussy" that goes on in my head while I think about quitting.

Running sucks because this is my foot...

    This is everyone else's foot...

I have zero arch. And after about half a mile, the pain is ridiculous. Its too bad that its the only thing that really helps me lose weight.

I hate running so fucking much, and I think a lot of it has to do with playing so much hockey. My legs and hips want to spread and tilt forward instead of propping me upright, and whatever the front/top thigh muscles are called hurt for days after. The other part is mental. I'm so used to using less energy to go faster, building up and keeping momentum, and turning around to go backwards if I want. After decades of basically flying (compared to running), the thought of all that stopping and starting bums me out. And I'm not even a good skater.

Some friends convinced me to play non-inline street hockey last summer. Working that hard, in the hot sun, for almost no enjoyment whatsoever felt like lunacy. It shocks me that there are actual floor hockey leagues that play on full sized rinks, when rollerblades are a thing.

In my youth I ran all the time.
    On purpose.
Sprints and races and all kinds of things. AND when I AM running, I'm fairly fast.

I'll run bases in a game.
Otherwise...No. Just no. I hated running by the time I got out of the army. Blah.

I haven't, as an adult, ever gotten the "runner's high". I don't 'zone out'. I get angry about it. Like legitimately angry.

Too stressful. I can do something I enjoy that kicks my ass.

For me running is kind of like going to the dentist, I know I need to do it and I'll be happy about it later, but while I'm there I can't wait for it to be over.

I'd rather hop on the stairmaster in gym or hell even the elliptical. The treadmill is literally torture. For hockey, the best exercise I've found that helps skating is box jumps.

    no.
    Not even then.
It's purely a mind thing, and I know it, and I don't care enough to change it because seriously. HAVING to run made me HATE to run. Now I'll do anything else just out of spite.

Instead of running, I will go to taco bell. I know it's not quite the same thing. But it gets my heart rate up and puts me out of breath the same way.

I usually save my jogging for those nights, after hard drinking, where interminable spins keep me hanging onto the bed trying not to fly off. So instead of praying for sleep or death, whichever comes first, I will go for a jog around the neighborhood barefoot. I typically forget shoes. Last time I forgot pants, so that would have been fun if little Timmy looked out his window to see a wobbling weirdo with no shoes, no pants, and hair in 16 different directions dripping rummy sweat. Then again, what the fuck is Timmy doing up at 4 a.m.? Go to bed, bitch. Stop judging me.

You know what is fun though? Jogging on the beach. It's like an obstacle course. You're trudging through the sand, the water laps at your feet. You have to dodge debris, rocks, whatever is out there. It's pretty fun. Plus it gives your ass a real workout, pulling your legs out of wet, oatmeal like sand.

For the record, I do not care to watch sports, but I will play anything with people. My friends are not the most physical bunch so I stick to rowing, weight lifting, drinking. Contrary to popular belief masturbation *is* a sport.

Learning is not very expensive unless you want them private. Hockey or figure skating will cost you a minimum of hundreds a year and a maximum of about infinity if the kid(s) talented enough to travel.

If you're learning as an adult you would want them private or you'll be with dozen of almost entirely little kids. And falling on your ass like them.

I fucking love ice skating. Its my favorite thing in the world. But the learning curve is steep. Once you get it down though, its a blast.

I don't understand all the hate toward running.

You get to basically zone out for miles while just listening to music and/or the thoughts in your head and/or nothing at all. I've been known to even close my eyes from time to time while running I get so relaxed (and yes I have run into a few things while doing that, so I don't entirely recommend it).

Then, at the end of the run, after feeling like dogshit for a few minutes, you immediately feel like a million bucks for the rest of the day.

To me, an athlete -- in even the loosest interpretation of the word -- saying they don't like to run, is like an alcoholic saying they "love to drink anything with alcohol in it, except liquor."
