Faraday described it himself, actually, during an unfortunately deleted scene from last season. "you go to a river, you throw a pebble in the river, you'll cause a small ripple, but nothing really changes. But if you go and you throw a boulder in the river, the whole stream is going to be diverted" or something along those lines. Basically, the bomb was his pebble. However, I'd like to point out something different and something I think is vastly more important. Assuming Jacob died when the nuclear bomb went off, and if he could be killed by a knife, he could probably be killed by a nuke if he was on the Island, then consider this. The bomb explosion killed Jacob, and sent the time traveling Losties to, apparently, almost the exact moment in time in 2007 that Jacob died. Perhaps this anomaly, Jacob dying twice in two different time periods, is what caused the divergent realities? Also, if you've heard the most recent podcast, you'll know this. It's not a spoiler, so I'm not going to tag it, but it is an answer, but not a fun one. Everyone wondering about the ultrasound dated October 22nd, 2004? Yeahhh, that was a prop error that they didn't catch in editing. Oceanic 815 landed in LAX, in LA X, on September 22nd, 2004. Balls.
Now that you mention it, that makes a lot of sense. Metaphorically speaking, one side of the stream is the Island timeline and the other side side of the stream is the Flash-sideways time-line. Maybe the river, or time, converges together when someone dies. That's a weird way of thinking about it but to me it makes sense.
Holy fucking shit. I defy anyone to deny how awesome that episode was. I know understand what some of the purpose of the flash sideways are. Jack, Hurley, even Locke. These people are all candidates. And these people's lives would ALL be better had they never come to the Island. Had Jacob never nudged them towards the island. Because I'm going under the assumption that this nudging, this difference is the big difference between the timelines. So... what the fuck? Also, it looks like Sayid is no longer a candidate. Because Jacob was really only concerned with getting Hugo and Jack away from the Temple. And also, i'm still going with my theory that Hurley is the next Jacob, because I think Jack has something more important to do.
How is Claire not shocked at all that Jin knows English? Haven't they not seen each other in 3 years? I wonder who Jack's wife is in the flash sideways.
Claire is fucking insane, she doesn't really think about Jin's English. And Jack doesn't appear married. It's possible that Sarah isn't David's mom though, if you take the stance that Jacob caused the accident between Sarah and Shannon's father that introduced Jack and Sarah, killed Shannon's dad, and may have indirectly driven her to the island, which caused the current state of her staying in Australia and not going to LA and having creepy sex with Boone. Breath And we now KNOW that Smokey was Christian when he appeared to Claire. But is that really bad? Does that mean that he's the one who told Locke to leave? Probably. But why would he have led Jack to the caves? And why did he tell Vincent to wake up Jack because "he has work to do" Because it looks like Jacob believes in this work more than Smokey. Whose clearly at odds with the Others because he and Claire are about to destroy the shit out of Dogen's people. Mother fucker, this episode was awesome. SON OF A BITCH UPDATE Austen was on the wheel! She was number 51.
So going off what Sherwood said, at this point, we have to begin to question Jacob's intentions even more. He looks less like a benevolent deity of some sort, and more like a twisted puppeteer. He may have brought the candidates to the island simply to prove a point to MIB. Very Book of Job-esque ( <a class="postlink" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Book_of_Job" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Book_of_Job</a> ) (I forgot the html codes and format for hyperlinking and did not feel like looking them up, shoot me) The theme of the entire show is very much along these lines. The Valenzetti equation (still relevant?). The purpose of Dharma.
Very true, and I can't deny any of that. But I still believe that, in the end, Jacob is going to be the good guy. My thinking is this. MiB, Smokey, Flocke... is not really the main opponent of the Island. Remember how he had been called The Island's Security System before? and remember how Ben called him to attack the freighter people? I think there is something else coming to this Island. Something to destroy it. And it may be Widmore, who may also have been who Jacob was calling to the Island, there's no way to tell. It may have something to do with Alvar Hanso? DHARMA? THE FUCKING ALTERNATE TIMELINE PEOPLE?!?!?! Who knows, but I currently believe that Smokey is NOT Jacob's main concern. Which is why he didn't seem to mind dying all that much (remember Ben asking why he didn't fight back?)
My first reaction is that there isn't actually anyone coming to the island, and that the whole thing was Jacob's way of getting Hurley to bring Jack (also, is Hurley Jacob's Locke? The impressionable, easy to manipulate Lostie?). Now I'm not so sure, considering we haven't heard word one of Widmore (mentioned earlier as being the one coming) or Desmond (more likely). I say more likely Desmond because Jacob seems to want to help him somehow.
Well, I think Jacob may have just been pulling strings. Because 108 is... Wallace? http://lostpedia.wikia.com/wiki/Wallace
Shit. That is a very good point. Perhaps Christian was actually Smokey's first recruit? Claire his second and Sawyer his third? Here's something to think about. Jacob said Jack and Hurley can't help the people at the temple. Which consists of a bunch of Others (who cares?) Sayid (infected, possibly Smokey's 4th recruit) and, good god MILES!!!! What's gonna happen to poor Miles
I think you are talking apples and oranges here. Locke and Christian are not recruits - they are vehicles that MIB used to move the pieces and get everything setup the way he wanted to. Claire and Sawyer are recruits. The hole in my understanding is the fact that we know where Locke's body is, but we have never laid eyes on Christian's. Not to mention, as pointed out, that Claire refers to Christian and her friend as two distinct entities. Maybe after MIB is finished driving your body around, you come back. Maybe this somehow relates to what happened to Sayid, and why he is now deemed "infected."
This is what has confused me as well. Why does the corpse of real Locke still exist, even though MiB seems to be using it? It would seem like MiB/smokey's power would be to literally take over dead people's bodies and be able to live as this dead person as if he/she had never died... but it has to actually be that he has the ability to recreate the image and transform into a copy of the dead person's body. It seems strange that to morph into different people, they have to be dead, and their corpse has to physically be on the island... smokey does not simply enter into the corpse and away he goes. Therefore Christian's body has to be somewhere, potentially meaning that there have been two "Christians," which might explain Claire's distinction of her "friend" and her dad.
Okay, so all of this reasoning around MiB and what his intent is. Why did he kill Eco? How the hell does that factor into the long time plan?
Maybe Jack has to be the one to kill Flocke? I have a strong feeling Widmore will be among the group that is coming. But I thought he was more likely to be on Flocke's side than Jacob's. Great episode, but presented more question than answers for me. I can't wait for next week, so I guess it worked.
is answered by yourself in this: You lost me on this part. Why does his body being on the island mean there are two Christians? Yemi's body was on the island, in a pretty decomposed state, anyway, but that didn't imply that there were two versions of him wandering around.
Was anyone else holding out hope that Bai Ling was going to end up being Jack's wife in the flash-sideways?
Man they weren't kidding when they said they the final season would be similar to season one. In case no-one's noticed, the flash sideways centricity is mirroring the order they were introduced in season 1. Season 1 - Pilot 1 & 2 - 815 Season 6 - LA X - 815 Season 1 - Tabula Rasa Season 6 - What Kate Does Season 1 - Walkabout Season 6 - The Substitute Season 1 - White Rabbit Season 6 - Lighthouse Season 1 - House of the Rising Sun Next week - Sundown Two weeks from now should be interesting, since season 1 was The Moth, starring everyone's favorite hobbit. The subtle nods they are doing to season one are fantastic as well. You'll notice that last night the spare key to Jack's wifes house was hidden under....a white rabbit.
Spoiler MAN IN BLACK: Morning. JACOB: Mornin'. MAN IN BLACK: Mind if I join you? JACOB: [Shaking his head] Please. Want some fish? MAN IN BLACK: Thank you. I just ate. [The Man in Black sits down not far away.] JACOB: I take it you're here 'cause of the ship. MAN IN BLACK: I am. How did they find the Island? JACOB: You'll have to ask 'em when they get here. MAN IN BLACK: I don't have to ask. You brought them here. Still trying to prove me wrong, aren't you? JACOB: You are wrong. MAN IN BLACK: Am I? They come. They fight. They destroy. They corrupt. It always ends the same. JACOB: It only ends once. Anything that happens before that is just progress. [The Man in Black stares at his compatriot.] MAN IN BLACK: Do you have any idea how badly I wanna kill you? JACOB: Yes. MAN IN BLACK: One of these days, sooner or later... I'm going to find a loophole, my friend. JACOB: Well, when you do, I'll be right here. MAN IN BLACK: Always nice talking to you, Jacob. JACOB: Nice talking to you, too. The smoke monster appears to have a very cynical and judgmental view of humanity. Most likely, it's a very black and white outlook, where people are either all good or all bad, and there are no shades of gray or extenuating circumstances. Smokey takes it upon himself to judge people (or maybe that's his job), and when Eko refused to repent for his sins (saying instead that he was only a victim of his circumstances and couldn't be held responsible), the monster could not rationalize that with his own worldview, so killed him.
Pretty sure it was the chick in that picture of Jack (looking young), his Dad and a lady on Jack's arm. Some brunette. Also, Adewale wanted out. Can I just say, (island) Jack is a bratty little kid. "I don't understand what this is, and no one knows the answer, so I'm gonna smash it." What a punk. Oh, and also, anyone notice that 109 on the dial is Mr. "Big Gay" Tom Friendly?
