He technically never sued the Yankees, and he sued the team doctor for something else (medical malpractice). Whether that matters, I don't know. But you don't think that taking him to court to avoid paying the "tainted" 700 home run bonus was a little....extra? Maybe every team would have done that, but I kind of doubt it. It's one thing to not want to employ a man. But going out of your way to make his life difficult, while still employing and paying him, just seems uniquely petty. On the other hand, if you're in a particularly "fuck ARod" mood, maybe that amusing instead of unbecoming. Can't really argue with that. The comparison to Lance seems fair enough, although he didn't really aggressively promote his own unique cleanness the way Lance did. Ultimately trying to parse who did and did not do steroids, who did real steroids vs who just took supplements, who did steroids but had a good reason, who we all know did steroids but can't prove it, who cheated but in a way that was totally different than steroids and therefore not as bad, etc. is just so tiring. Maybe I just say this because my favorite team employed Manny and Ortiz. But why do we all love Colon and give him a pass? Why are we keeping Piazza out of the Hall? Why are we all so sure that we can trust the unsourced reports about Sosa? And why did we elect Pedro to the Hall when he was on the same list? Are we mad at Dee Gordon because he had to use steroids to get above 150 pounds sopping wet? We all just seem so maddeningly inconsistent about all of this. As far as I can tell, ARod's primary sins compared to other users appears to be that he was personally unlikable, very good, and got caught.
Just as ARod is cut, the team thought to be most likely to be interested in him loses their biggest star for the rest of the season. Stanton is out, ARod is in? It almost makes sense....he puts butts in the seats being a local boy teetering on 700 HR's and he did hit 33 last year. But where are they going to put him? I don't think he could even be average at third and the few times he was tried at first he was a mess.
That's just it: He simply cannot play defense anywhere anymore and at this point he's only marginally a big league hitter. Also Friday is simply the best its going to get for Arod in terms of having a nice sendoff and walking out on his own terms. He blows all of that to shit if he plays for the Marlins(or anywhere else).
He was granted his unconditional release by a non-playoff contender during the season after playing about 10 games. That's walking out on his own terms?
I was referring more to the last game specifically(the "WE WANT AROD!" chants, the standing ovation, the send off from the "Core Four," etc.). And since he gets to keep every penny of the 27ish million still owed him, yes I would say he got enough of his own terms in there.
.@JimBowden_ESPN: ARod to the #Marlins is going to happen, has to clear waivers Monday but it's going to happen. Play 1B 4:45 AM - 15 Aug 2016 Let's see what happens.
You know what, I take it back; I forgot exactly who we were dealing with here. A rational person would take the nice send off and go home and count his money. This would be immensely shortsighted and nothing more than a "Look at me!" attention grab...which sounds exactly like something Arod would do. Why the Marlins would do it is another matter entirely.
Uh, because Jeffrey Loria is a dick? This is a guy who soaked the taxpayers, sued his own fans, and operates a team with a mostly empty stadium. ARod will fit right in.
According to Arod's publicist it's not happening. http://mlb.nbcsports.com/2016/08/15...s-not-playing-for-any-other-team-this-season/
Since I follow an AL team I don't get to see pitchers bat but a few times per year. I just have to say Kyle Gibson looked like a 3rd grader being asked to give a speech in front of the whole school; like he'd rather be anywhere in the world than in the batter's box. I don't recall other pitchers looking that frightened when batting, but I don't have a very big sample size to compare.
I was listening to the game on the radio on the way home last night. Braves' announcer Don Sutton described it like this, "You know how you might challenge a buddy to a race? And, so you get in a ready position with both knees bent, one foot in front of the other. Gibson looks like that, except somebody stuck a bat in his hands right before they said 'go.' "
I like it when pitchers bat(although I also like that one league does it and the other doesn't). They basically fall into three categories: the pitcher is terrible (Gibson), the pitcher is terrible but hilariously so while occasionally doing well (Colon) or is actually pretty good (Bumgarner). I'm entertained with any of these possibilities.
Collin McHugh is having a BAD day: Baltimore - Bottom of 1st Jones homered to left. Kim singled to center. Machado homered to center, Kim scored. Davis homered to right. Trumbo homered to center.
He kept trying to bunt but was so completely inept at it that Molitor eventually just let him take hacks. He did actually walk once, which I'm sure was humiliating for the Braves pitcher.
I'm pretty sure the Braves pitchers are past humiliation this season. They've used 14 different starting pitchers so far.
I've got to hand it to Mike Zunino, he used his time demoted to AAA wisely. The guy is a good defensive catcher with some serious power, but the previous 2 years with the Mariners he hit .199 and .175. Since he was recalled he's hitting .282 with 8 HR's and a .282/.402/.690 slash line. I got to watch him in the recent series with the Angels and he's definitely grasped the strike zone. His most impressive AB he fell behind 0-2, fouled off a couple boarder line pitches and worked a walk. If he can keep this up he will be an All Star.
Because fuck the Cardinals, that's why. http://deadspin.com/the-cardinals-lost-their-57th-game-1785556465
I doubt many of you have heard of Jimmy Wynn, but he had one of the greatest nicknames of all time...."The Toy Cannon." He was one of the most feared batters in the game during the late 60's/Early 70's. He had 291 HR's...and he had a bit of speed, stealing 43 bases in 1965, 225 in his career. I just picked up his rookie card, which is double cool because he played for the Houston Colt .45's...The Astros before they were the Astros. Spoiler
I had a belly full of the Yankees super rookie Gary Sanchez the past few days, but I am glad to see he's now inflicting damage on the Orioles. Teams are going to start throwing at his ear hole any time now.
