Giving the bid to countries that don't have the proper infrastructure in place is a cluster fuck. Even in cases where the country might have some of it in place (like Brazil), corruption is still rampant and it's the poor people who pay, as in the case now of people being displaced out of the favelas in order for the areas surrounding some of the stadiums. Brazil's government is white washing what visitors will see, then once it's over gangs will come back in and nothing will have changed except for the incredible hardship caused by families with nothing to their name being forced to move. Not to mention the anger the populace feels at watching billions of dollars be sunk into the costs of getting ready for a WC while there are so many other issues that are not addressed. http://www.theguardian.com/commenti...-cup-marketing-police-abuse-killings-security
The citizens of South Africa will STILL be paying for the World Cup in general for at least 4 decades, in addition to everything else. Rates (municipal taxes that include garbage removal, etc. - similar to property taxes in the U.S. but much more comprehensive for the Gov't's benefit) all increased 30% before the WC and have stayed up since and are set to increase again this year. That monstrosity of a stadium constructed in Durban (a.k.a. the Bread Basket) is still used for football and barely gets 1/3 full because it is so expensive to go. The WC Subsidy that the stadium was receiving from the Gov't ended last year. Article on February for costs (for an estimate of Dollar figures, divide R's by 9): http://www.iol.co.za/news/south-afr...-mabhida-down-but-not-out-says-city-1.1641053 The Municipality's view is that the Stadium should not generate profit. That means that the ratepayers in Durban will be paying for a Stadium that we didn't ask for, permanently (and most were very against the WC because they knew the Gov't would pull some shit like this). Same thing happened here re. favelas - all the squatter camps near the major highways were bulldozed and residents were forced to relocate. Guess who footed that bill? Yup, the taxpayers. FIFA can go fuck itself. They have fucked over any chance of real growth that this country can have because everyone will permanently be paying for things like stadiums and new airports. Fuckers. The only countries that should be allowed to bid are those that have the infrastructure already present to host a WC - I don't even think that Russia has that level of infrastructure; I know Brazil and S.A. didn't and Qatar will never have it. The same can be said re. Hosting of Olympics or Winter Olympics.
