I've watched a few of sailing YouTube channels that posted videos of their preparations. Some in the Keys didn't even take down sails or canvas enclosures. They're new to this, channel is only a year old, I don't think they know how bad it can get. I asked in a comment why they didn't strip it all off, haven't gotten a reply.
my favorite is the rich assholes who leave their boats in the marinas because “we have floating docks, we’re fine” posts up 8 ft. Storm surge of 10 ft min.
Sandy's storm surge was about 2' from lifting our dock off the pilings in Norfolk. I've found it's typically the richest boaters that can afford an emergency haul out that pull their boats. The mid level boaters sometimes don't even come dow to strip their canvas or prep at all, just make sure the insurance is paid up. The poorer boaters prep like crazy cause they can't afford to replace anything and don't carry insurance.
Shame, I really liked the Ft Myers area, and that week in a Sanibel VRBO remains our best vacation to date. Hoping for a good recovery, I know it won't be speedy.
Not YouTube, but here's one: https://www.wfla.com/weather/tracking-the-tropics/watch-live-hurricane-ian-coverage/
I love that the preview image is a normal sunny day with a happy beach crowd. And then you play it and enter hell.
I’ve been trying to find a webcam for the skyway bridge. If anyone knows where to look lmk. I’m sure that’s insane.
