Correct me if I'm wrong, someone who knows about hormones, but a surplus of testosterone or estrogen can cause the opposite effect, right? If a woman is introducing too much estrogen to her body, it will cause her to start producing extra testosterone and hence unintended health consequences. Am I out to lunch on that one?
Signed up for the CSA thing, the ongoing weekly program doesn't start until mid-June but I was able to get a 16 pound flash frozen one time deal and was pleasantly surprised that half the cuts were premium, I was expecting more ground/stew meat. Pretty pumped.
I made this homemade gyro recipe and it turned out great. These moroccan meatballs also turned out nice and didn't require anything out of the ordinary. There are a few pages of other ideas (with pics) over at chowstalker's lamb section.
Oiverheard this in the gym and had to share it here, just for it's ignorance. Meathead 1: Yeah I just got off a mass gain cycle and I'm looking to lean out a bit. Meathead 2 (who I've gathered over time from being at the gym is an amateur bodybuilder): Well when I need to lean out for a meet I always really cut back on my carbs and that helps reduce water retention. (Good so far) Meathead 1: That makes sense, but that's gonna suck 'cause my wife loves making me pasta. Meathead 2: Well just make sure she only makes the whole wheat kind and you should be fine. (Swing and a miss...) I just shook my head and walked out.
I'm feeling another Whole30 challenge coming on. I have a road trip planned for next weekend, then after that might need to hit the reset button. Anyone interested?
I feel like I should since I crashed and burned so miserably last time. Plus as I have been outlining elsewhere, I have been having some issues with kid's breakfast cereal that needs to be reigned in as soon as possible. But looking at my calendar, I just don't see how it is possible in the next couple months. Or I guess everything is possible, but will take more will power than I am capable of.
Dunno exactly how paleo this is, but this is the recipe I've been starting my day off for the last few weeks or so and I've dropped 13 lbs so far: 2 cups mixed frozen fruit (mangoes, peaches, pineapple, grapes, strawberries) 1 banana 1 cup plain greek yogurt 2 cups kale greens 12 oz water Chuck it all in a blender and whip it up. Comes out to about 400-500 calories, but since it's a smoothie the quantity can be adjusted super easily.
The only thing non-paleo in that is the Greek yogurt, and that's pretty nebulous for the most part. I wouldn't equate this breakfast with weight loss since it's high in carbohydrates and I'm assuming the Greek yogurt is low fat. Most people on paleo looking to lose weight do a higher protein (Greek yogurt is probably sufficient), higher fat, lower carbohydrate diet that's satiating like bacon, eggs and kale or one of these smoothies. Not denying your results or saying you necessarily should make a change, but you might want to consider trying those smoothies if you hit a plateau assuming you want to lose more weight.
I'm pretty much winging it with this diet thing, going on the general philosophy of tracking intake, and replacing all decisions with better decisions. So instead of my usual 8 bowls of morning cereal, I have a smoothie that includes fruits and veggies.
Over the last two months I've tweaked the smoothie I make myself for breakfast every morning. Too much fat or protein and it went to waste; too little and I wound up eating all day long trying to satisfy the hunger. DCC's Morning Smoothie -1/2 can of coconut milk (no preservatives, just coconut milk and water) -1 raw egg (2 eggs was too much) -1 tsp cod liver oil (pharmaceutical grade) -2 Omega 3 capsules -1/2 banana -1.5 cups frozen fruit (berries, peaches, whatever) -Water so that it's thin enough to drink. My hunger is gone until noon, so it lasts a good while.
Here is the smoothie I usually have after a workout in the mornings: 1/2 cup of coconut milk 1/2 cup of fruit (usually mixed berries, or blueberry/strawberry) - note here, but be certain if you buy frozen they don't add sugar and you have to read each type of fruit to verify that 2 eggs 1 tablespoon of egg whites 1 banana a huge handful of something green and leafy (spinach or kale) cinnamon vanilla extract (double check here for sugar as well)
I am thinking of doing a Whole15. I have mostly been good, but this last week in Vegas for a conference I just ate awful the entire time and drank way too much. I really have to accept that gluten is something that fucks with me. I played beer pong as part of the conference and just felt awful for about 30 minutes until I drank a bunch of water and moved to vodka/soda.
Also, if you have a Costco membership, they sell 4lb bags of frozen berries (blueberries, blackberries and raspberries) that also has nothing added to it. This is what I get and use for my smoothies when the fresh stuff is out of season and they tend to have a pretty decent taste to them.
I failed on this and did mostly a Whole5 before I drank again on the road. One thing I noticed the second time was that the Whole30 routine really makes me think about my vegetable intake which I had allowed to suffer tremendously post program. I wasn't terrible, but I wasn't filling my plate with veggies and making myself finish them either. Funny part though is that first 4 days cleaned out the system enough for me to get that last 3 lbs down to 185. Yes, I know the scale is a fucking liar, but there are psychological benefits that one experiences from actually achieving a goal the right way. I mention the right way, because even though I was so close to my target I refused to make it on crash dieting or dehydration. I wanted it to be a legit morning weigh-in after plenty of water and food that I stepped on the scale and saw a number under 185.
So we just made this. Holy hell was that good, if you have a tolerance to a bit of bite (not spicy, think herbal bite) and want a good pork recipe I can't recommend it enough. Next time I'm doing a double or triple batch. I would have taken a picture of the final product but I ended up uncontrollably devouring it before getting the camera.
I also experimented today. My own take on a Blueberry Kale Smoothie: - 1/2 cup coconut milk - 1 raw egg - fish oil - 1 cup fresh blueberries - 2 cups fresh kale - water NEVER. AGAIN. Holy fuck, that thing had the consistency of spoiled milk (almost too thick to be drawn through a straw) and tasted like swamp. Savory smoothies aren't my thing, evidently. I'll stick to my fruity one, TYVM.
