Has anyone here been eating any dairy? I've never had any problems with lactose intolerance, so I gave it a try. Lately I've been doing a paleo/warrior diet where I pretty much only eat at night. I'll have a big cup of coffee with a packet of stevia and some heavy cream in the morning just to keep my stomach calm. Around noon or later if I'm really hungry or feel low on energy I'll have a little bit of fruit to hold me over, but most days I fast all day. When I get home in the evening I eat like a pig until I'm absolutely full. The only dairy I've been eating is the cream in my coffee in the morning, a few different kinds of cheeses (including cottage cheese), and greek yogurt. I haven't been drinking any milk, since I don't care for it anyway. I haven't had any problems thus far, and as time goes on I've been eating less dairy, because I just haven't been craving it as much (except for the greek yogurt, that shit is awesome). I've heard of other people doing this without any problems, but if anyone has any good reasons not to, I'm all ears. I'm planning on doing the warrior thing until I get to my desired weight/body composition, then I'll start eating more during the day. I am enjoying this not eating dinner thing though. I get a lot more shit done and I'm never drowsy in the afternoon.
I am pretty solidly lactose intolerant, but there are certain products I can eat without GI distress because of the active cultures: cottage cheese and yogurt. I also have some acne. Do you guys think that eating the dairy that is not causing me problems otherwise would be causing the acne (even in part)? I know my dad and aunts had to deal with acne even in their early 20s so I figured it was a genetic waiting game, but if it is exacerbated by my diet then I will very willingly give up my cottage cheese. Thoughts?
The indirect answer is: it's possible. The only real way to find out is to do an N=1 trial and see what happens. Eliminate the cottage cheese and yogurt for a week or so and see if you have any improvement. If not, more than likely, they're not the culprit. If your acne does go away, however, you can always try reintroducing them back into your diet and if the acne comes back, you know that's what's causing the outbreak. If you're willing to give it all up if it is the issue, then what harm is there in giving it up for even a week just to find out?
I am doing that now. I eat a lot of cottage cheese for the protein content. Meat is expensive around here and I eat a small amount of it once a day if I'm lucky. I have to be creative when looking for protein sources.
Speaking of offal, what's the take on grass fed vs not with offal? Also, is there a way to make liver not taste like a combination of old pennies and a car filter?
Tip with liver: soak it in milk for at least an hour before you cook it. Helps to remove the bitter taste.
I read all 26 pages of this thread yesterday, and I have to say: that Whole30 challenge sounds fucking horrible. That said, I am excited by the recipe for pork tenderloin that Frank posted, so I went to my local health food shop and bought almond milk, almond butter, and various other things which I had no idea existed until this moment. I will make it tonight so I can't comment on the recipe yet, but my first reaction is: sweet organic Jesus this shit's expensive. It worked out to $25/meal. I earn decent money, but that's downright nasty. On the other hand, life's too short to eat shitty food, so if it tastes awesome I'll be converted. Particularly on pay days.

It honestly ain't that bad. I've done 2 of them in the last 6 months (April and August). I lost 10 lbs in each of them and my relationship with food, especially sugar and alcohol, has drastically improved each time.
Figured I'd ask here as there's a fair overlap between the keto crowd and the paleo crowd - anyone have any concrete thoughts on keto as a viable diet option? I find that the negative crowd can be VERY loud without citations, however keto's proponents also have a tendency to cite things that aren't peer reviewed and can sometimes contradict themselves I've already done a ton of research independanly, but I'd very much like some other people who know their shit (and isn't as crowded as reddit) to make sure I'm not going to kill myself Basic plan: 2000 calories a day max, less than 30 g of carbs primary staples will be avocado (need it for potassium), tuna, chicken, beef, spinach, and eggs - obviously there are more options but these are my 'defaults' that I'll be eating frequently / daily. I hydrate very frequently already and don't think this will be an issue I weigh 310 lbs and am 6'5. I have technically been diagnosed with diabetes type 2 however my blood sugar stays in a reasonable/non diabetic range if I don't eat like a moron anyway. I also have high cholesterol and high blood pressure. Any thoughts / research saying this will kill me / well founded opinions on keto and what I'm getting myself into?
The answer is primarily going to depend on what your goal is with the diet. Are you looking to just lose weight? Are you/will you be doing any sort of exercise regimen? If so, what type? High Intensity, strictly cardio, basic weightlifting? How active are you currently? If you can offer up a little more info, it'll be easier to get you some info.
I think the biggest thing I have against it is that when The Husband and I went Keto, it made us feel like shiiiiiiiiit. No real harm in giving it a shot, as far as I'm concerned.
Primary goal is to lose somewhere in the neighbourhood of a hundred pounds. I currently am effectively sedentary. I will be cycling again mornings to get the blood flowing once I'm in ketosis, and will also be starting a lifting program soon after (likely something like Rippetoes) - but my priority first and foremost is weight loss.
Not to shove "paleo" down your throat at all, but have you considered the Whole30? That program (because of what it's actually intended for) sounds like it may be more beneficial.
No largely due to a lot of random allergies to some paleo staples (like most nuts that aren't pistachios). Its something I may eventually consider, and will likely adhere to parts of it anyway, but i'll likely need to suppliment with some legumes and absolutely will be consuming tofu during keto.
Dude, if you're allergic to something, don't eat it. There's nothing in the Whole30 that's required to eat. I never eat nuts and I have no problem with them, they're just not my cup of tea. If your looking primarily to lose weight, both a keto diet or a paleo diet is going to help you in that aspect. Like Shimmered, I tried the almost no carb fully keto thing for a couple of weeks and just generally felt like shit. But that also most likely had to do with my level of physical activity and needing some carbs to keep myself feeling "normal". So ultimately my suggestion to you would be try the keto deal if it works for you and just see how you feel. If you're feeling all sluggish or foggy, especially after doing exercise, try eating a sweet potato or some other carb dense food and see if it helps. I can assure you that one potato won't cause you to blow up.
Had liver and mince patties the other week, once it's all mixed in together you can barely taste it. Liver and bacon is the shit though.
Liver pate with dates is the only way I can choke that crap down. Even then, it's begrudgingly. Ugh. Liver is gross.
I was with a bunch of Argentinians last weekend and they had grilled sweetbreads. Holy crap, those things were awesome.
ZOMG! YOU'RE EATING BREAD YOU HYPOCRATE! HOW CAN YOU SAY YOU'RE PALEO WHEN YOU'RE EATING BREAD!?* *I know sweet bread is animal product.
