Going to try Whole30 and see how it goes. Any tips/suggestions? I think I'll be ok, I'll miss diet drinks and condiments the most...
Find things you enjoy that are compliant and don't be afraid to try new things. We used to be ketchup fiends in my house and now we don't even miss it. Good mustards are Whole30 compliant if you really want something on the side.
I just spent the last day or so reading this entire thread. Thanks a lot guys, very informative. I bought Robb Wolf's The Paleo Solution a while back and read that as well. This is the end of Day 2 of eating Paleo(so far nothing but fruits, fish, kale, roast beef and turkey, and when I go shopping tomorrow I'm going to get eggs, carrots, etc.). So far my body is feeling more "out of whack" in a way that's kind of hard to describe, and I haven't had any real cravings at all(though I suspect that will soon change). I have a headache I just cannot get rid of and my stomach feels funny once every couple of hours, but other than that I'm fine. I have a question about Paleo and seltzer water. I drink seltzer water all the time, so I figured I had the hydration part of Paleo down pat, and its just carbonated water with "natural flavoring" so I'm pretty sure it's Paleo, but does the carbonation affect hydration at all? Like does drinking seltzer water hydrate you less than normal water? I've tried looking this up on the web and read conflicting results. Also, apologies if this has been addressed in a previous post and I just missed it going through the whole thread at once, but would a light balsamic vinaigrette be against the rules for Paleo? Looking at the ingredients on the one I bought at the store, the only red flags my untrained eye can see is sugar, soybean oil, and possibly xanthan gum. Would that be enough to put it on the do-not-consume list? Thanks in advance.
Hopefully this is just simple carbohydrate withdrawal and it passes quickly or is just unrelated to the diet. Wish I could answer this, no clue though. I wouldn't sweat it if you love the stuff, obviously if you're trying to be PERFECT you can't have it, but if you're just trying to be mostly Paleo play on as long as it's gluten free. I would ask though, is there a reason you can't just do olive oil and vinegar as dressing instead? It would probably taste better and the fat will help you absorb the nutrients better.
So I've been Paleo for about a year and have had some pretty good fucking food, I know a lot of you have more experience and I'd like to hear what your favorite recipe is. Not a top 5, just ONE recipe that you could live and die by. Obviously tastes change but I think it would be helpful if we just went with what our current favorites are. For me it's a fairly simple choice of Nom Nom Paleo's Korean short ribs. It's perfect, grass fed short ribs are easy to get and relatively cheap, it's slow cooked which is supposedly even healthier than high heat cooked meat, the Asian flavor is there, but subtle enough you can eat it for weeks on end without it overpowering your taste buds. Also, it's pretty easy to pair with vegetables, I've done both Olivia's cooking greens and roast carrots with it and it's perfect. I have six pounds on the oven right now and they probably won't make it past Thursday.
Thanks Frank. Yeah, it turned out to be (presumably) carb withdrawal, as the headache was gone by the time I woke up the next morning. I've also been experimenting with mixing olive oil and vinegar, with mixed(pardon the pun) results.
Has anyone else dealt with rashes their first week into the Paleo diet? So far I've been pretty strict on what I've been eating and for the most part I feel great, but I keep getting rashes around my upper legs, and just today around my lip. Could this just be a lack of caloric intake(I haven't been counting, but if I had to guess I would say I've been eating less calories since I started), or perhaps something else(I haven't changed my routine at all except for my diet)? Google so far has proved inconclusive. This is Day 8 and other than this I'm enjoying the whole not-eating-grains-thing. Any suggestions/ideas on the rash would be greatly appreciated.
The only thing I could think of is that you now have something in your diet that you never used to eat and you're allergic to it.
Hmm.....I hadn't thought of that. Although, doing a quick mental inventory of what I've eaten in the last week, I can't think of anything I've flat out never had before, I'm just having more of it(meats, greens, fruit etc.) now. My olive oil and cashew intake have gone way up, perhaps that has something to do with it.
When I stopped eating a lot of the rubbish I was eating my skin cleared up massively although I'd say getting out of a stupidly humid climate had some to do with it as well so apart from maybe an allergy I can't help.
And coming out a really shitty 4th quarter for eating (but a trip to Thailand and a wonderful Christmas) it is third Whole30 ahoy (I am actually trying to go Whole50 and make it until my birthday.) I really need a big reset with my food relationship again.
Well, the rash problem seems to have taken care of itself. This is the 12th day of going Paleo/Primal. So far I've had no grains, alcohol or even caffeine. I have had a couple glasses of milk though.
I didn't bother doing a Whole30 when I changed my eating habits, just stopped buying most of the things I was eating and only had for the most part fresh food in my fridge. Good thing about it was it forced me to learn how to cook.
I completely feel you here, but I am just the kind of folk that needs a goal to help me get back on track. I also travel a lot for work with others, so the excuse of "I am on a special program for 30 days" helps to get rid of the weird looks when I don't drink or have them take cheese out of everything.
Good thing I learnt somewhere in the last year to stop giving so much of a fuck what other people think because my sister was heaping on the hatred and picking me up every time I ate something even a little bit like what I had said I'd stopped eating for the most part.
What are some good natural remedies for upset stomachs? The GF has been able to break her 3-4 Tums a day habit when we made the switch but she's kind of sick right now and doesn't know what to do. She doesn't want to take Tums because the artificial coloring will probably just exacerbate things, but she's at a loss for what to do. The only help I've been able to give is to avoid sweet potato skins, and ramp up bone broth consumption. Anyone have better ideas? I'm pretty oblivious in handling an upset stomach
Has she tried taking a small amount of ginger root? I know a lot of people swear by it for motion sickness, so it may be a quick fix you could try relatively cheaply. Really would only need a gram or two.
I second the ginger. Whenever I have an upset stomach I boil some water and add a bit of ginger to it. I also usually add a but of honey and lemon juice to improve the taste.
