I don't mind the "boring" updates at all. The smothies I'm making have fish oil in them. Since ALL sugar, including gum, is a no-no, what do we do to make sure our breath doesn't stink for the rest of the day? Any suggestions?
I'm not a dentist, so take this with a grain of salt. Perhaps you should brush your teeth, and use mouthwash. Do it after lunch also.
Woah woah woah....I didn't know that I signed up for no gum! I have about a pack a day habit so may need to reconsider this whole 30 thing. Well shoot, I guess it stands to reason even if they didn't specifically say no gum (maybe they did and I conveniently overlooked it). Probably just drinking enough water would help the breath thing. Shoot, I'll probably resort to chewing on mint leaves or making a virgin sugar free mojito (water and mint) at some point. edit - I bet mouthwash isn't "technically" allowed
It's all I can do to wash my hands in the disgusting work bathrooms...I don't know how realistic it is to bring a toothbrush in. In fact, the thought of it grosses me out. I know that's irrational, but there you go.
I don't think it is irrational. I watch people brush there teeth at work in a bathroom I don't even like to inhale while I'm in. It is disgusting. I take one big breath in, and hold it until I'm done pissing. Maybe you could brush your teeth outside, just bring a cup of water out and do it next to your truck. I dont think mouth wash would be that hard either.
Have you considered just using a tongue brush after eating? You can get something like this that should do the trick. You don't have to worry about going into the bathroom to use it and cleaning your tongue is actually much more of a deterrant than brushing your teeth as most of the odor causing bacteria collects on your tongue. Also, just wanted to throw out a good luck to all of you doing the Whole30 plan. I originally wanted to join in, but my travel schedule with work is going to have me on the road a bit for the next 30 days, so I know I wouldn't be able to do it spending half of my time in hotels. That being said, I do plan on trying it once I'm back home for an extended time, so I'll definitely be following your guys' progress to see how you all handle the challenge.
I'm gonna be honest here. There is no way I'm not chewing gum. Going to try making a steak curry tonight. Will let y'all know how it turns out.
Eff that. When I did the paleo thing super strict, I kept my gum and my hummus. I'm up in people's faces waaaaay too much to NOT use gum.
Ok, so 1 day down, 29 to go, and so far so good. I followed my food/exercise plan that I posted earlier to a tee as well (and even added in a couple mile walk with the dogs after my exercise class). The huge Whole Foods pork loin roast that I made in the crockpot turned out just OK. I thought I seasoned the crap out of it, but it turned out less flavorful than I would have hoped. I somehow found myself without garlic, so that is likely why. The bummer is that it was huge so I was hoping to be eating it for a few days. Any paleo friendly recipes out there which incorporate a basic shredded pork loin? By far the thing that I am missing the most is artificial sweeteners, particular in my teas. I did break down on the gum though, like shimmered mentioned, I am just to close to people to not chew gum. Role call for the rest of us...we all still in and going strong? Yup, all is well here. No gum, either! (Although I did have some dried fruit.) Breakfast: 1/5 Fritatta (I make a 10" fritatta every Sunday. 5 eggs, bacon, veggies, seasoning). Smoothie (banana, frozen berries, coconut milk, fish oils, egg) Lunch: Baked chicken thighs with eggplant, artichoke and mushrooms + an orange Dinner: Ground beef sauteed with tons of veggies and tomato sauce. The week will be much the same; I pre-cook on Sundays so I don't have to piss around during the week when I'm short on time. Like Mya, I'm missing sweet stuff right now.
Throw some sea salt and pepper and minced garlic on it and throw it back into the crock. Should be fine.
All good here. Although I had a horrible want for a milk shake today. I haven't had one in probably close to a year which makes it weird.
In a moment of "why the fuck didn't I realize this beforehand", I took the recommendations on this thread and went out and bought a can of coconut milk. For starters, I didn't read the directions as I didn't think drinking a liquid needed directions. I was a tad surprised when I opened the can and it was practically solid. After transferring the contents of the can into a blender and adding some berries to it, I made a delicious looking smoothie. As I took the first sips I remember thinking in my head, "why does this taste like this?" After two more sips I dumped the rest down the drain. It's like sucking on a coconut...I fucking HATE coconut. I was thinking that it was going to be a lot like the coconut oil I cook with. Milk like consistency, but with hardly a hint of coconut taste. Chalk one up for me being beyond retarded today. You can take the pulled pork and make a pork chili out of it. Maybe make a raspberry chipotle BBQ sauce and have it over mashed cauliflower. Or better yet, you can get some daikon, carrots, cucumbers; pickle them (omit the sugar) and grab some cabbage and make a cabbage wrapped banh mi.
All good so far. BKFST: yesterday - sweet potato hash topped w. 2 fried eggs, side of leftover NY strip. today - scrambled eggs & chives, an avocado, smoked salmon (making sure ingredients were only salmon & salt, no sugar used). LUNCH: spinach greens & carrots topped w. ground turkey, handful of strawberries for a snack. I brown up a lb of ground turkey on sundays to use as a quick lunch on days w. no leftovers or as a protein for nights I might be running late and don't feel like cooking, easy enough to whip up a stir-fry if part of it's already prepared. DINNER: This recipe, subbing chix thighs for the drums with some sauteed kale and cauli-rice topped w. fresh basil.
So add to my food list yesterday, sliced strawberries and bananas in a bit of almond milk at about 11PM last night just because I was so desperate for something sweet. So, my question is, how much fruit is too much? I had an apple, an orange, and the strawberries and bananas. Seems like quite a bit to me. Should I try to pare it down from here on out? Today: Essentially the same breakfast and lunch as yesterday. Only change, no pork in the eggs this morning but I tossed in a bit of coconut oil and they were much better (I scramble them up in the microwave, no fancy breakfasts for me) Dinner: some variation on the pork. I appreciate the suggestions to spice it up. I think I will try some variation on the chipotle sauce and eat it in lettuce wraps. Snacks - I am going to try to eat less fruits today, I brought a tangelo to work with me. I really don't need a snack at 11PM, so I will try to cut that out today too. Exercise - a wee bit sore from yesterday so I may just try to run a few miles, it's pretty nice outside. That chicken recipe from Nom Nom Paleo looks quite tasty, got some chicken breasts (off the bone though) thawing right now that I think I will try to marinate overnight. Kinsey - you will have to give us your recipe review. I need to spend more time on that site, the pics are total food porn.
Going fine so far. Breakfast: Yesterday: none Today: Eggs Lunch: Yesterday: Vegetable soup, assorted nuts, grapes Today: Oranges, baked sliced ham and turkey leftovers, diced tomatoes Dinner: Yesterday: Sirloin steak, assorted nuts (ate way too many nuts the first day, I was also snacking on them throughout the afternoon), baked sweet potatoes Today: Asparagus, peaches, chicken curry Exercise: I'm exercising 3-4 times per week Yesterday: None. Today: 2 mile run, sit ups, triceps, biceps, light swimming
Mya - unless you suspect insulin resistance, you should be fine with that amount of fruit. edit: But if you're doing the whole30 to change your perception on food, you may want to consider WHY you ate what you ate,and try to avoid that emotional eating. The mindset you're in when you eat is very important during the whole30.
You mean questions like, "Why do I have an overwhelming desire to suck on one of the cane sugar cubes I keep for my tea right now?"
So, I guess that missing the sweetness of my Stevia, opening up the refrigerator to get a glass of water to take to bed, and thinking the strawberries looked good isn't a valid reason, huh? But yes, I get it, I totally get it. I don't think that I have problems with insulin resistance, so hopefully will be OK on fruits. I do have problems with nuts, funny that somebody mentioned having way too many nuts on his first whole 30 day. I can't keep them in the house, or they will be in my stomach. All of them. I don't get those "binge" moments like that with fruits, but eating just because it looked good probably isn't a good idea either.
You can totally try making a snack of almond milk, slivered almonds and raspberries, or blackberries. Just don't emotionally nomnom it.
