As much as I want it to be JoePa who put a hit out on the DA, there is a much more probably story. He had recently taken down a big heroin ring in PA. Its gonna be so lame when it come out that the head coach of Penn State did not hire a contract killer. No one wants to read about a run of the mill heroin ring.
OK...let me get this straight: Sandusky molested children through his organization and is a an assistant football coach for Penn state. In 1998 it is reported that he has an innappropriate relationship with a boy. He is investigated and admits to showering with the boy. It is reported to the charity. In 1999 (aka a short time later), he "retires" from Penn state despite being first in line behind Paterno. The charity still allows children to "befriend" the predator and have one on one time. In 2002, a grad student finds his old ass. Coach in the shower with a 10 year old. He reports it to his higher ups. They take away his keys and tell him not to bring children around anymore. It is reported to the charity. Predator begins working with a local high school. Wrestling coach finds him laying innapropriately with student. Does nothing. Student,'s mom tells the school her son has been sexually assaulted. Investigation follows. It takes nearly 15 since the first complaint and 2 investigations, but he is arrested and charged. The media picks up the story, and everybody is pissed. More victims emerge. Who am I supposed to be pissed at? It seems like there a bunch more people besides the folks at Penn state that enabled this gentleman just as much. Fuck everybody involved that chose not to be involved. Penn state could have done more, but they seem like the only organization that did anything. The charity knew this man had multiple allegations nd they continued to allow him to be involved with children directly and void of supervision. The high school coach did the same.
I'll go a step further: what happens if it comes out that mcqueary used this incident as a springboard to his current gig? He was a recruiting coordinator with Penn stare immediately after college. He left Penn state and tried to become a coach with the raiders and in Europe. He returned in 2000 to Penn state. He became an assistant coach in 2004. Keep your friends close, and whistleblowers happier.
Damn, Sack had him for 6 months to live I gave him 2 years. Hello "treatable" lung cancer. http://www.tmz.com/2011/11/18/joe-paterno-lung-cancer-penn-state-scott-paterno/
<a class="postlink" href="http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/sports_blog/2012/01/joe-paterno-health-continues-decline.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/sports_ ... cline.html</a> Well, that was a very quick decline. Sounds like he just gave up.
Doesn't matter what specifically killed him (if, in fact, he is dead). I find when people lose the will to live, they die quickly after.
Jesus, are we derailing another thread? Spoiler I don't know if any of you have had a close relative with a serious/terminal illness. They can actually be well for years and years, and yet invariably when their desire for life wanes, and in their mind they start wishing it was over, they are apt to die very quickly after that. Mental state factors greatly into wellness, IMO. Three of my four grandparents were like this. All had prolonged terminal illness and in the end it wasn't the advance of their disease, but their lack of desire to keep going that brought about their end. I still haven't heard if he's for sure dead.
What are the choices? A: He died today and some nurse or whatever leaked it. B: He didn't die and people are reporting it based on choice A C: He did die and his family is all pissed off that someone other than them released it. D: He's circling the drain and he's basically dead already. They just jumped to conclusions.
Whatever he died of, it was no doubt the cancer's fault. However people DO give up the will to live. Just look at old couples. I'm talking about couples who have been together their entire lives- fifty. soxty years. When one dies, the other basically dies of lonliness. It is the most heartbreaking thing ever, but you'll notice when one goes the other isn't far behind. So he IS dead. Huh. Drag.
My best friends little brother battled a very serious and invasive cancer for many years. Because of his will to live he survived it far longer than anyone expected. During his illness his dad developed a glioblastoma. They went through their treatments together. However sadly his dad succumbed to his cancer. My buddy's brother died 2 months after his dad. The will to live may sound cliche but in no way can it be underestimated.
Of course it's a combination of the mental, spiritual, and physical. But, for every anecdote about someone's mental and emotional fortitude overcoming a disease, there's a case countering it of someone fighting like hell and rapidly being overcome by the pathology of a disease. There's no way to make a judgement about a public figure's very personal and individual situation. Condolences to his loved ones and supporters. It's a shame there was so much controversy towards the end of his life.
I like how everyone is talking as though death is caused by the will to live going away. Instead of, you know, the imminence of death, advancing cancer and bodily decay causing what we perceive as a will to live disappearing, followed by death.
To be pretentious and quote Wittgenstein, what do you get when you subtract your arm going up from your willing your arm to go up?
