I guess this will be one of those threads where I call you all idiots for liking shitty shows. Seinfeld should have beat The Simpsons. As much as I like The Simpsons, Seinfeld changed comedy. You can draw a stark dividing line between sitcoms pre- and post-Seinfeld. Also, Golden Girls should have beat Friends (seriously, what an unfunny piece of shit). The omission of Fresh Prince of Bel-Air is glaring. Durbanite... BBT... what the fuck is wrong with you, bro? Get the fuck out. Everybody who loves Everybody Loves Raymond should be sent to a gulag and shot. Word.
My parents love Big Bang and I practically want to distance myself from them because of that. A laughless show. I would not have found it funny in 1989, much less now. It says a lot for network TV audiences.
You should know as we'll as I that in the 80's it was perfectly acceptable for a girl in grade 9 to do porn.
Honestly, there's no excuse for not doing a full 64-team field for this....it's not like there have been any shortage of sitcoms over the years and some of them could play the role of Montana to Seinfeld's or Cheers' Syracuse. Especially since half the ones they did pick weren't exactly ground-breaking (Malcolm in the Middle?? Seriously??) Based on the field they do have I'd probably go with the same final four (although the lower-left bracket is very weak). I'd go with Seinfeld as the overall champion, which I'd probably do even with a better field, although Always Sunny would give it a run for its money.
"I love that about as much as I love Raymond, and I spit on Raymond." - Mr. Floppy, character on Unhappily Ever After. The show was a blatant Married with Children rip-off, but I got some laughs watching it with my ex-wife when she was pregnant with Li'l Bandit. Still better than Everybody Loves Raymond.
Almost completely agree. I didn't bother reading their articles on how they chose the 16 though but come on, Malcolm In the Middle? No Married with Children (who also had a Traci Lords cameo since we're on the topic). Please. As for The Simpsons Vs South Park. I think The Simpsons highs still outclass South Parks highs any day of the week, personal preference I guess. But they have had some shitty lows, for a LONG time. South Park can still bring it consistently and I still watch them Wednesday nights religiously when new ones air. In the sense of all time greats I'm still giving The Simpsons the edge.
I think the Brit comedies The IT Crowd, Father Ted and Spaced are funnier than any live action American show, ever.
These were my original quotes. I have never even seen an episode of Murphy Brown, and I'm getting killed with people singling out Everybody Loves Raymond here and in rep? My point was that I thought that if this was supposed to be a bracket of the greatest sitcoms of the last 30 years, that ones which had much, much longer runs and got better ratings than Community ought to be considered ahead of it. But, whatever - you guys are mean. I was just trying to participate in this thread that SHEGIRL WAS NICE ENOUGH TO BUMP, what with her rising from the dead and all to come back here and be all mod-like. Fine shutup I've got to get to the early bird special and take my back pill.
Fail. Our comedy shows sucked its our stand up comics that are funnier than you guys. Kids In The Hall I completely loved, though. The Brit comedies are faster, smarter, and truly make you laugh out loud. Probably because they have a bit of a looser leash. There are scenes on The It Crowd that have nearly brought me to tears. However, in the end The Simpsons win. The impact, innovation and satire that show provided is untouchable.
Ive only seen Father Ted episodes. Shit is bland as fuuuuuuck. Hardly a match for the likes of Rosanne, Cheers, or Seinfeld.
Eye of the beholder, I guess. My country does not have much. KITH, Red Green and Trailer Park Boys are probably the only of note. I think I like the Brits because my dad did. Especially Fawlty Towers and Black Adder.
Re: Re: Sitcom Smackdown I love brit coms, also because my dad used to watch them all the time. Fawlty Towers is a fucking riot, same with Are You Being Served?. Beyond that, give me the old school stuff. Fresh Prince, M*A*S*H, Golden Girls, Cosby Show... The 80s weren't good for much, but they mastered the sitcom, in my opinion.
Those brackets are horrible. Most of those shows seem to fall into the category of 'It's really hip to like them because no one else can see the genius in them.' Where's That 70's Show? Better than half that list. Animated? Where's Beavis and Butthead? Far superior to Simpsons and South Park. The Office shown there isn't even the best Office. Larry Sanders? Malcolm in the Middle? Sex and the City? Community? 30 Rock? These were in contention for the best of the last 30 years? Mash should have been in here (and won - last episode was February 83, so forgivable that it was left off). Friends was ok, but Golden Girls was better. I don't how Seinfeld loses to anything except MAYBE Cheers. Roseanne was a great show. The Simpsons winning? I'll say it again, I don't get that show, and never have. Some of my friends love it and are aghast that I can't stand it. I can't think of a time where I didn't see the joke coming a week away, obvious, overused jokes, and pastiche of satire (while remaining absolutely faithful to social mores - which isn't satire) apparently have it locked up. Married with Children was a far better Simpsons than the Simpsons ever was. And all these newfangled shows? Get the fuck off my lawn before I put some buckshot in your ass.
I think Absolutely Fabulous should be added to the finalists. Chick show or not, it could be gaspingly funny at times. What's funnier than a woman going to bed with a fresh cigarette in her mouth just for the purpose of lighting it the second she wakes up?
