Was that a body double for Ilithyia? I don't think you ever see her naked without the sex mask on. On a related note, what is the pay scale for doing a panning topless shot in the coliseum scenes? I know times are tough out there but still. Not that I am complaining.
Go back and watch the 1st episode. Full fontal of her in the first episode, albeit, with a Muff Toupee.
Don't know if anyone knows this but Spartacus comes on netflix instant stream around midnight. Its nice since me and my roommates are night owls we just stay up and catch the next episode before most people. Besides that this was a great episode everyone's character are really taking hold and the story is getting better and better. I'll discuss more tomorrow when everyone else catches up.
Holy shit that episode was intense. Spoiler I didn't think he was going to do it, can't wait to see where the show goes from here though.
Spartacus really didn't do it though. Varro pushed the sword himself, he was basically dead but told Spartacus to finish him so they both don't die. I don't think I have hated a character on a TV show as much as Ilikthyia. I really wish she would die (The actress does a great job).
Wow. That kid had a seriously good 15th birthday. Great episode but I'm a little miffed as Spoiler Varro was one of my favorite characters and its a shock to see him die, but it will definitely advance the plot. Spartacus' slave girl is the hottest in the series for mine. More of her would not go astray.
That kid so never learned about bros before hoes. Unless she promised to fuck him regularly, he wasn't too smart either. I guess this is what shocks Spartacus out of his sweet gladiator lifestyle and actually puts him on the path to rebellion. The one thing I'm really excited to see both this season and next is how they get Crixus to join the slave rebellion.
I'm pretty sure that scene where a 15 year old "man" who got to decide the fate of a gladiator outside of the arena probably did it. The mere fact Dominus and the Magistrate essentially boiled his life down to coin also kicked it.
Nah, I doubt Crixus gives a fuck about that. I suspect Ashur will spill the beans about Crixus and Naevia doing the dirty and Lucretia will kill her/have her killed. In fact, if I were going to write the episode, I would have Spartacus trying all episode to convince Crixus to join him, and have Crixus repeatedly refuse in favour of remaining loyal to the ludus. Then Ashur spills the beans for some personal gain, and in the last moments of the episode Crixus agrees to join Spartacus. What I'm more interested to see is how Spartacus and Batiatus' relationship changes. There's an argument to be made that Batiatus should feel as betrayed as Spartacus. Does Batiatus play on that and use Spartacus to get revenge by killing the kid, or does Spartacus remain off the deep end next episode and fuck everyone's shit up? Tune in next time, same bat time, same bat channel. ...wait, that's something else. This show used to be a guilty pleasure of mine. My thinking was, sure it's not particularly well written and the acting is a little over-the-top, but it's fun and there are plenty of tits. But as the series progresses, the writing is getting better, and the actors are becoming more comfortable in their characters. It's becoming a show that I'm interested to see what's next, as opposed to being an ultraviolent softcore porno I waste an hour with every week.
All the gladiators should be pissed off, especially Spartacus. After he spends all that time helping Batiatus and teaching the 15 yr old kid about the honor code of the gladiator, the kid just spits in his face by forcing Spartacus to dishonorably kill Varro. Clearly it was from Ilithyia's manipulation, but it was clear that the kid understood that the gladiators were about a code of honor above just pain and bloodshed (i.e. the "brother" vs. Crixus lesson that honor and pride are vital and can be preserved in defeat). Still, the kid just goes along with Ilithyia's plan to get his dick wet. Fuck him. This should signal the complete breakdown of Spartacus's and Batiatus's relationship. Spartacus will be furious for Batiatus showing no spine towards Varro's death. He'll also clearly know that even though Batiatus has been friendly and generous to Spartacus, he's still a pawn that is cast aside when Batiatus wishes. It's a clear message that he's nothing more than a slave, and may get him focused on breaking out. Batiatus will be humiliated that he was rejected by the magistrate, and his insecurity will cause him to lash out. Lucretia's scolding that he spends too much time with Spartacus will hit home, and he'll be sure to compensate by demonstrating that he is "dominus". Ashur will be key in the whole thing completely going to shit. He's clearly clever and has no loyalties to anyone but himself. I wonder if the fact that Naevia saw Barca's murder will force Ashur to move against her. Like a previous poster said, I'd bet Ashur tell's Lucretia, and as a result Naevia is either sold or killed. This sends Crixus into a rage, and willing to take down the ludus. I can't remember exactly if Ashur knows Batiatus murdered Spartacus's wife, but if he does, I wouldn't be surprised it comes to light. Ashur has been playing too many sides, and he's going to get cornered. When he does, huge revelations will come to light. I still have no idea how Doctore will fit in to the whole storyline. For a while it seemed like he would expose Ashur as a fraud, but he's been silent about it for a long time now. It doesn't seem like he'd join the gladiator slave rebellion, but it also doesn't seem like he'd stand up for all the blatant wrongdoings that have been going on. Should be interesting to see what happens. Looking forward to next week's episode.
It's amazing how little respect the Romans had for Human life. I think all the Gladiators would be upset about Barrow, not only did he not die in the arena but he was not really beaten. His life in the hands of a 15 year old? Shameful. I pretty much want him to die first (the wimpy little kid) then the guard with the burned face. As much as I hate her I'm not sure I want to see iylthia die yet because I enjoy her nudity so much. Also what was up with Spartacus's statue? Just a head and a cock? This show has far exceeded expectations, that last episode was definitely a surprise.
Most of you bring up some pretty good points about how the show might move forward after Varro's death. It all depends on how long Starz wants to draw the show out though. I say that Varro's death is going to be one of many things to come which come back to push Spartacus into rebellion but for now, it is going to be smaller, more day to day issues that move the show forward.
I see this series working time line wise a lot like the Tudors does (did?). I think the small revenges will be achieved this year but we won't get into the rebellion until at least season 2. Honestly, arena battles are more interesting to me than full fledged battle field battles anyways and Spartacus needs to move to the larger stage before he really gains the love of the people. I think Batiatus brings his wares to Rome by the end of this season and maybe Crixus and Neavia are exposed and she's sold or beaten, further ruining Crixus.
No, it has been said numerous times that Crixos and Spartacus become friends. Crixos will join Spartacus most likely because they will kill his slave girl and he will want to fight for something other than glory. I hope they do away with that constant slo-mo crap, some epic battle scenes will be welcomed if they do! Of course they will be welcomed if they won't as well.
I'm not saying they won't become friends, I'm just saying that Spartacus needs a bigger stage to perform on before he becomes the hero of the people. He's the champion of Capua, but I think he'll perform in Rome which will be the finale for the season finale.
Well, they fooled me about Ashur. I was pretty convinced he'd be playing both sides throughout the series, to end in Batiatus's demise. Interesting to see how Crixus changed in this episode. In the start of the episode we see how much he obsessed over the primus against Pompei. Clearly his ego was shocked to find the crowd booing him (after all, in his eyes, he is the "true Champion of Capua"). But finally, even after he wins his glory, he isn't thrilled. He's pissed Naevia wasn't there with him. A few episodes ago, Spartacus and Crixus were convinced that there was nothing worth living for outside of the arena. Now, both have an eye for freedom. Now that the magistrate is dead, I wonder how his kid comes in to play. I would imagine the kid inherits his father's fortune, which Batiatus hopes to get his hands on. Since the kid loves gladiators, he probably thinks he can manipulate the kid to his own advantage. Clearly Batiatus is much more clever than the show led us to believe eariler on (is it just me, or did they try to make him look childish and foolish early on?). But he has no idea that Spartacus discovered that he ordered his wife killed. I would assume Spartacus will slowly and strategically plan to overtake the ludus, but wouldn't be surprised if he just flipped out and started cutting up guards. We all know how history has written the ending of the story, but it'll be interesting to see how it gets there.
I think his ambition will be much higher than overtaking a ludus, freeing the slaves of Rome will be his goal.
I think we'll be seeing a much more cunning and strategic Spartacus now. With Varo dead he won't have anyone that he can trust and I guarantee the writers spend the next episode or two fleshing out Spartacus figuring out who he can trust and making allegiances. My prediction is that Batiatus uses the Magistrates son, plus the patronage of Illythia's husband to make a move to the games of Rome. This will put Spartacus in the perfect position to build the necessary following to lead the slave revolt. The last episode was the best one they've done so far. Looking forward to the next episode.
I just watched 9 episodes over the last three days on Demand, and I'm hooked. The fight scenes are the best you can ask for in a TV show. They have less time, less budget and they keep it action packed and it revels in its bloodletting.. The characters are all drawn with a broad brush: Spartacus is a compelling and convincing character and easy to root for (you really feel his pain) and Crixus, though stubborn, reveals more human layers to his personality with each episode. It's visceral and VERY comic book right down to the bloodletting, and SEXY. Fuck, the women on this show are all insanely hot. Of course, I could do without the abundence of shaft here and there, but why carp? We finally have a show that's both exciting AND interesting, story-wise. Wherever they go with the plot I will follow.
