Man Im glad I never started that shit. Ive got a major addiction to caffiene that Ive tried going cold turkey off of a few times. Debilitating migraine headaches or energy filled coffee buzz? Not a hard choice.
Quitting wasn't terribly difficult for me, once I decided for myself that I wanted to quit. Anytime I tried because someone else was pressuring me it didn't last long. I am the Chandler Bing in that if I walk by someone smoking I take in a deep breath, but generally it's not a temptation. It's just funny how even watching See, knowing that I'll feel sick has kept me from opening them but you're absolutely right. If I've got 'em I'll probably eventually smoke 'em. By the way, cigarettes are expensive now.
From the Dead Pool thread: It really floors me how many iconic musicians from that era we've already lost. Cobain, Staley, Weiland, and now Cornell. Did any other era of music lose so many of its greatest musicians so soon?
Late 60s rock. Hendrix, Morrison, Joplin, later Lennon. There was a much bigger pool of artists though. Grunge was big but relatively brief.
What grunge did was act as a catalyst for all the original and amazing music of the 90's. The decade had so many different artists and genres. It was the last decade that had truly great songwriting, partially because it was the last decade where artists did heroin. I'd never touch the stuff, but what it did for my music collection is admirable to say the least.
Ive been getting into Blind Melon lately. Shannon Hoon never gets his due as a singer. Axle friggin Rose let him sing back up. I guess they just never hit it big enough before he died for them to become a bigger point in the 90's zeitgeist.
I am a huge Blind Melon fan. You're right about that. But, talk about music driven by drugs. It did help make it great though. Sad as that is, it's true.
Seems like most great music is driven by sadness and tragedy. You never hear many great songs that are about growing up white in an upper middle class suburb and going to a respectable college then having a moderately successful career.
I want to go home and put on comfortable shoes. Fuck thesr shoes, they are gone after today. Too bad I don't have the balls to walk around in dirty Christmas socks like my supervisor. She emboldens my inner bachelorette frog but I am just not ready to expose my coworkers to that sort of darkness.
I did say great music. Not sure anyone would argue Ben Folds FIve is on the list of unforgettable bands/musicians.
It broke rock free from 80s hair metal the way that NWA broke rap free of the shit hop garbage that preceded it.
I would argue that Ben Folds fits your original description of a moderately successful career coming from an upper middle class upbringing.
The song fits his description to a T. Ive seen Ben Fold two or three times in concert he's friggin great.
I hate Brick, but I love the rest of that album. I can't believe Chris Cornell's gone and we'll never hear him again. Husband decided last-minute to see Temple of the Dog in Seattle last fall...I so wish I could've gone with him. I was probably working. Bah.
Saw Soundgarden like 5 years ago with a buddy as a present from the wife. One of the best concerts I've been too. Definitely a bucket list item.
In case anyone was wondering, my baby geese are hilariously sweet. They're a week and a half old already, and they follow my son and I around, basically any human. They think we're the parents. When I sit down, they climb into my lap. They like petting on the neck and wings. Since baby geese are called goslings, we named the boy "Ryan" and the female "Denise" after my wife's aunt who tries to inject herself into every conversation. Also, with their afro, they look very much like baby dinosaurs from Jurassic Park. Not my picture, but this is them basically.
For those of you who like fish, what would your one choice be if your options were: Pollock Cod Haddock Halibut
