I must be doing it wrong. Or right? My daughter has this holiday with her dad this year, I get Christmas. I am split from the husband, so he is a state away from me. My parents were going to swing by on their way to warmer climes, but mom got sick and so they are starting their journey tomorrow. I spent today absolutely alone. And I LOVED IT. I'm an introvert who grew up in an Army household where I wasn't able to form long term attachments. This doesn't bother me. I suppose it should. Maybe some day I will regret it. Today was not that day. Anyway, I extend wishes of happiness to you this holiday season. I am kind of bummed I haven't been around this board much in many months. I've been kind of preoccupied with other stuff on the internet.
I've never left the house on Black Friday, except to hunt or go to a bar or something, don't intend to today. I bought a 227 piece mechanic's tool set online for %50 off. Pick up in store, sometime after today, you can be sure of that.
Yeah, today Canadian Tire has some killer prices on some tools... 80% off of some things. I do believe I'll be heading out there this afternoon to stock up on some stuff that I don't really need.
Other stuff? The internet is only three things: TiB, shopping at Amazon and porn. We've eliminated one of those . . . Also, we noticed you hadn't been around and sent out a search party, but they all got drunk and passed out in the woods after the flashlight batteries died.
May have to go get some impact sockets if that’s the case. I don’t usually like Crappy Tire but for mechanical tools they’re great.
2016 did set a high bar to cross. I'm too hung over to join the stampede. I did the black Friday thing once, about ten years ago, and that was one time too many. Fuck those crowds and the lunatics who line up 5 hours before the stores even open.
I'll have you know that my internet leisure time has been taken up mostly with tumblr and AO3. So yes - porn.
Since there was nothing else on TV, I just had The History Channel's Ancient Aliens on for background noise for a few hours. I think I lost about 20 IQ points. I hate to think of what would've happened to my poor brain if I'd actually been paying attention to the TV.
I sharpen my knives at work now. Lube, bench grinder, surface plate (these things are awesome), lube, flat stone, lube, leather strap. That’s how you make it like a razor. Hatori Honzo could not have got it sharper. Edit: yes I am aware what I said sounded vaguely S&M-ish thank you.
Just be careful with the bench grinder... if you put too much heat into the blade it’ll fuck up the tempering and soften it right up.
“No human could have come up with that. They HAD to have been from outer space!!!” ...that was on the History Channel. Deep breaths, kids.
Indeed. It is used for a very short time, with kid glove pressure. I skip the grinder entirely the next time I sharpen. People underestimate how fast they can erase their steel . Hell, even a sanding wheel can be too much if you’re not careful. “It is better to have to much than too too little.” Always.
The sad thing is I'm someone that will at least entertain the possibility of the paranormal, but I'm not completely gullible. I know the human mind tends to seek familiar shapes out of random images (Like looking for shapes in clouds) and hearing something that makes sense out of random sounds. One of the episodes on Ancient Aliens today was babbling about alien sculptures somewhere and then they'd outline the shapes, declaring them alien handiwork. They were fucking rocks, nothing more, nothing less.
The Learning Channel currently has shows dealing with an "energy healer" and a medium who talks to the dead. Apparently they've learned that you can make money from gullible idiots.
Most of those channels used to be great... History, TLC, Discovery... then they realized that it was hard and expensive to put together good content. There's a reason most "reality" bullshit shows are so popular with networks.... they are CHEAP to produce.
