    Shit dude, back when I was a civilian, I shot every single week for years. I never even came close to anything bad happening to me. A buddy of mine on the trap team almost got shot, (girl shot five rounds at her station, chambered a sixth, and got surprised when the umpire told everyone to switch. While walking to the next station, she tripped, pulled the trigger, and blasted a divot out of the concrete two feet from my friend) but it wasn't me.

    Maybe it's just that I shot with a bunch of 50-year-olds, but the emphasis was always on safety, and we never acted stupid.

    On the other hand, if you're shooting with a bunch of like-minded idiots, something bad is going to happen eventually. It might take a while, but stupidity combined with complacency is a really bad combination with firearms.

    So I get back to my apartment after break all excited to break in my new speakers without somebody yelling at me to keep it down. After plugging all the shit in, I turn on my computer that I haven't touched in 2 weeks. Nothing shows up on screen. No POST beeps. After nearly flying into a murderous rage I find, by trial and error, that one of my RAM sticks is dead. Okay, it's 4 years old, I can see that, but how the fuck does it die when it hasn't been used in 2 weeks? And when it was working fine before?

    Anyway, these speakers are so loud they're making the walls rattle. And I don't even have a subwoofer! So. Awesome.

    To his credit, he appears to have experienced a personal epiphany in recent months. If I were looking for a fresh start, I wouldn't hang out with people who had ready access to written descriptions of all the things I don't like about myself.

    Believe it or not, when power is going through it, and it's warm/expanded and working fine, that can keep it going even if there's some sort of mechanical defect or error.

    When power stops flowing through it, and it gets cold and physically shrinks, it can cause shit to give up the ghost.

    If you constantly power on and power off your hardware, and it goes through some temperature changes (like it's in a cold room), those shifts can cause things to become unseated or move a bit after enough time goes by due to the repetitive thermal expansion and contraction.

    It's generally a good idea to rip stuff apart and check it every few months and make sure that everything is plugged in all the way, and ram is properly seated, that kind of thing.

    Same goes for moving. After you move, open up the case and check stuff out before you turn it on, just to be sure nothing came loose.
