Remember a while back after I had the IAC replaced and the throttle body cleaned I said the car was running good? Not great, but good...something wasn't quite right, but I wasn't going to mess with it?

Well, it was driving me nuts, No one else would've noticed it unless they really knew the car, but I just had to try to get it back to right...

So, yesterday I had the purge canister replaced. Bingo! Rough idle gone. It also had been running so badly for so long I hadn't realized after replacing the IAC that it still wasn't getting the full benefit of all of it's power band. It is now. I'd forgotten how hard she can pull when healthy. Like. A. Freight. Train.

    So, Yay!

Also, here's a picture the shop took while it was in there. She's dirty, but you can see what the new exhaust tips I had put on when I had the Flowmaster installed look like:

(They're a bit bigger then I originally envisioned, but they're grown on me after a couple of months.)

I finally pulled the trigger on an MR2. Solid body. Needs some cleaning up. Having a starting issue was hoping to refine my search. Engine starts up strong but will die immediately if I dont rev the engine and keep it above 2000 rpm or so. After about a minute of revving the car settles in and doesnt die. There are dozens of things it could be. Directions to go?

I'm thinking the first thing I'd do in that scenario is clean the injectors and replace the fuel filter.

Congrats on getting a toy and have fun with it!

I'd check out the idle air control valve, first.

Toytoy, the tips look almost factory, right? I think my Z28 had rectangular tips.

Kubla, turbo? I've always had a soft spot for those.

Yeah, I was going for a sort of factory look, except in stainless instead of black chrome. These were the only ones I could find and they're quite a bit bigger then the factory ones.

    Congrats.

I'm looking for my midlife mobile also. Probably be a reincarnation of my old mustang GT, something cheap to bang around these county roads in.. I'd have already bought one but the stimulus checks seemed to elevate the mid 90s muscle car market for a while. Desperation is sinking back in and prices have dropped, around here anyway.

It needs to be cheap, in case I wad it up in a ditch somewhere, I don't want to care.

    Kubla? Any updates? Pictures?

I'm guessing it's a manual, you've mentioned before that you like rowing through the gears. I can't be the only one curious to see pictures and wondering if it's a turbo. I've never driven a turbo MR2, but I've read nothing but great things about them.

It's an manual NA. At some point Id like to swap a V6 into it. Ive only driven it a little but so far I am loving the handling even though it doesnt have power steering. You can really feel the dynamic differences of the weight being over the rear wheels. Much more pronounced than my brother's Porsche.

Certainly needs some cosmetic freshening up. These pictures hide the clear coat haze because it was drizzling. Im going to be compounding it and should clean up enough to be more than presentable. Lots of little things ticking up but so far nothing super major. Shampooing and ozoning knocked out the barn smell and the interior is pretty nice.

New set of tires. The inability to align the front end ate the inside of the driver's side front after 25K, and since I don't want mismatched tires...a whole new set. Oh well, it could be worse.

And not new...the CEI came on again yesterday. Same old issue, p1441 purge system. I've replaced the solenoid, the vacuum switch, and the canister. I'm going to replace the solenoid one more time on the chance that running it with the bad canister it may have become fouled with charcoal. Something definitely purged yesterday, right after the light came on I got a strong fuel smell through the vents, but it went away quickly enough and I haven't smelled it again. If replacing the solenoid doesn't do it, I'm going to have to start going through the vacuum lines, which I really don't want to do.

The car better be damn thankful that it's fun to drive, I would've jumped ship a long time ago if it was a Sentra.

Toytoy, you know I'm your friend, but you really like to do things the hard way sometimes.

I'd have just replaced the two front tires, but it's not my money.

Have you done a smoke test on the EVAP lines? I really don't think that the purge solenoid is bad (but I could be wrong).
Also, I was looking up tips/ TSBs for that code on your car, and a failing PCV valve can cause that code; that doesn't make a lot of sense to me, but it was in the database, so that's something else to look into.

EDIT: What are you going to do about the alignment? If you don't do something, it's just going to be another set of tires next year...

Sounds weird, but what the hell, PCV valves are cheap. I just ordered one and the breather hose, we'll see what happens. What could possibly go wrong? (Remembering the mess I ended up with when I had my idle air replaced....)

As far as the tires are concerned, it had Cooper Zeons on it ($146 each) and I replaced them with Faulkens ($98 each.) So for basically $100 more I got a full set instead of just replacing the fronts. I wasn't thrilled with the Coopers anyways. If I can ever chase down a full set of level II SS springs, I'll put them on and should be able to get the front end in alignment.

Thanks for checking the TSBs, I would've never even thought PCV.

SHIT! I forgot to mention this: I was reading through the whole diagnostic procedure for that code, and IF the EVAP lines are reversed on your new(ish) charcoal canister, it can cause that same code.
You might want to check that out, and post a picture if possible.

The canister was replaced quite a while ago, so I think it would've cropped up sooner. That and something definitely purged just before the light came on, that's why I'm thinking there may have been some charcoal in the lines that may have fouled the solenoid. I've read numerous incidents where a bad canister kept fouling new solenoids.

I bought something kind of stupid...

Pillar gauges are so 90's, but I kind of dig them.

I don't think they're stupid. Particularly when one of them is a boost gauge for the turbo that I would put on the car.

They are way too 90s rice tuner for me. I skipped a lot of cars because of that. Also aftermarket side skirts. Not a single one looked as good as the factory design.

Hey! Guess what I got again? A CEI with P1441 error code.

It has to be a vacuum line at this point. The whole purge system has been replaced, up to and including the gas cap. I just cleared the code and called it good for the moment.

I have noticed that it throws the light and code after the car has been sitting for 10 hours or so and it does it within a mile of starting up. The only thing I can think of is a cold vacuum line that has contracted. This is driving me nuts.

(Also, I did replace the PCV per the TSB)
