That would be my guess. It's probably a liability if a shop or the insurance gives the car back without all the safety equipment functioning correctly. Once it's a salvage title though, all the liability is on the owner for anything that doesn't function. That being said...I'd jump all over a car like that and take my chances if I got it for 1/2 of book value.
Kind of a moot argument without knowing the extent of the damage. If it needed a module, that means the air bags went off and it was in a decent sized collision. They're bean counters, which is cheaper; repair or replace? If the Accord dude was paid out $13k, I bet that the damage is decently close to $13k.* The only time I've seen the "repair vs replace" not apply is a "structural total" The most famous case is the newer Corvette that went off road and put a 1" crack in the aluminum monocoque which would require complete disassembly of the entire car. You could easily weld that up but GM calls it a "non-serviceable item". While more expensive than "repairing" it, they deemed it a structural total. I've never had a car total off lack of parts. I've had vehicles with discontinued parts that the insurance co just gave them the money for repairs and basically said "You're on you own". I recently had a customer in a Kia Sportage. Someone stole the cat conv. OEM is discontinued and the A/M cat is not legal in CA. Insurance wrote her a check for the damages and closed the claim. They are only responsible for the damages. Not for getting you back on the road. @dixiebandit69 - No offense because you know your shit, but the idea of an insurance company letting a customer roll a "repaired" car without SRS is laughable at best. Yes, the customer could buy back the car (now a salvage title) and option to not repair the SRS but any shop that agrees to do that? Yikes. I've had two mid 90's Silverado's in the last 1-1.5 years that needed air bags but they're discontinued. They wanted me to repair everything but the airbag. Nope. The few grand in profit isn't worth the liability. *Little known fact- When they total out a car, it isn't just what the are the damages vs what is the car worth. In this case, let's say the car is worth $13k and a salvage yard is willing to pay $4k, then it only needs to hit $9k in damages to total out. With cars being so expensive right now, the salvage values are going up. I've had cars with a $15k value total at $10k because the recyclers are so desperate for parts they're paying top dollar for totaled cars.
This is why while I plan to hold onto my truck as long as possible, I'm terrified on getting into an accident or something else happening and needing to replace it. As we saw with how long delivery took for Nett's new build and how much they want for used vehicles right now, it's insane to find a replacement. Keeping it should be doable; It's a 2011 with 115k miles. I still mostly work from home and when I do go into the office, I drive less than 4miles round trip to the commuter station. The biggest detriment to it lasting another ten years is that it doesn't fit in my garage so it sits out in the weather.
I'm selling my 2019 Tacoma for $29k, with 28,000 miles on it on Carvana, which is about $300 less than what I paid for it. Picking up a 2021 Tacoma with crew cab, V6, 4x4, in the same color for $33k hopefully today. Kind of blows my mind I get a brand new truck for like $4k, and it's bigger.
Ended up getting a new Tacoma for $33.7k. The difference in speed from a V4 to a V6 is a bit shocking. Also, Vroom bought the old one for $30.7k. I'm still kind of in shock that I got a brand new truck for $3k difference.
I kinda want to sell my Titan, go back to driving my old 1988 k2500, pocket the $30k. I said I'd never sell the Titan and I would try to get half a million miles out of it.
Crazy had a 2016 Ram 2WD. He decided he wanted a little 2021 Kia SUV. They gave him the SUV + $5000 for his Ram.
DO NOT buy a truck from any of those companies. I am not joking around. I know that you think I'm some braindead, redneck moron, but the only manufacturer on your list that I would recommend for ANYTHING is Honda, and they ain't no truck maker. As far as I'm concerned, Tesla is a scam corporation. Elon is too concerned with going to Mars these days. I don't see the Cybertruck ever going into production. I just can't shit on Elon enough. What is wrong with his face? He looks like he's in the early stages of an allergic reaction, or he got the shit beaten out of him a couple of weeks ago, and all the swelling hasn't gone down yet. If you want a real truck with a gas engine, buy a Ford or a Chevy. (And I've got recommendations on this; there are some you shouldn't buy) If you want a real truck with a diesel, buy a Ford or a Dodge (Fuck calling them "Rams". It's a Dodge.)
I am good with the Tacoma. But some competition has to drive the prices down. They are a bit fucking absurd right now
Honestly, I would rather have his 5 year old Ram rather than the new Kia. It only had 15K on it and was in pristine condition...if it'd been 4wd I probably would've bought it from him. It was amazing that he got a new rig plus $5k for it, but it's not a deal I would've made because of my personal preferences.
so today we had some work done at the house, and one of the guys was driving I think it was a '17 1500. A bit over 420,000 miles. Yes that's a funny number but no it isn't a joke, I saw the odometer myself. Hasn't replaced a single thing except for regularly scheduled maintenance and fluid changes. Gave me a whole new respect for Hemis. I take back what I said.
The only problems I've ever had with a 3500 Ram Cummins was when they went full Chinesium with the front suspension... tie rods and ball joints were fucked almost immediately, and it wasn't until I updated them with a "made in USA" upgrade that addressed that specific issue that things worked well. Other than that, I have ZERO issues with the Ram/Dodge 3500. Love it, and highly recommend it.
Crazy had some problem with his Sirius radio or the antenna for it, but that was the only issue he had with the truck. But hell, with only 15k it really wasn't even broken in yet.
They couldn't figure out there ball joints. They changed them every couple of years. Ford/Chevs, for a full 2 generations(10 years) i could carry 3 ball jointed that would do the upper and lowers for a decade, that number for the ram would get you a couple of years of coverage. And the steering gears, they knew they were a problem, the fix was twice the size but they why put the good one in when it might not fail.
Any suggestions on where to get rims/wheels? I want black rims, and I was going to be charged $200 to basically swap the tires from my old truck. I figured I could just upgrade the rims when the time comes, but not sure where to find them.
