I presume you've played Bowser's Inside Story (as if I needed to ask). I bought that for my middle son for his 6th birthday and was all psyched to play it myself, thinking it was a platformer. I was very bummed to find out that it was an RPG because, as I've mentioned before, I don't dig RPGs. How is that New Super Mario Bros. game for the DS? I realize it's been out for a while but it didn't land on our radar until recently. How similar is it to the new Super Mario Bros. Wii?
I posted this in the "Can somebody help me with this" thread, but just now realized I'm an idiot and should have posted it here.
Well... No, actually. Bowser's Inside Story is technically a sequel to Partners in Time, so I thought that I'd try Partners first. And having played Partners, Inside Story has dropped down a few spots on my list of video game priorities. I'll play it eventually, but there's no rush. Quite similar and it's a great game. Buy it.
Ryu is extremely fun, but challenging, too. On the plus side, he has terrific control, speed, and his latching onto walls means never having to die by falling down a hole. On the down side, he has a wimpy jump, which is a huge defect in a platformer, and his sword slash is very weak. The very first part of 8-2 is ridiculously difficult playing with Ryu, for instance. Much worse than the one on the Wii. I was really looking forward to a new Mario game, and was very excited about buying New Super Mario Bros. for the DS a few years back. However, after playing it for about an hour on my friend's DS, I decided it was so crappy and mailed-in, that I wasn't going to waste my money. The level design is just dreadful; they're so boring. For full disclosure, I should mention that I had been playing Super Demo World before, a fan-made hack of Super Mario World, which was vastly superior. That's right; a couple of 20 year-olds made a Mario game that was way better than an official, best-selling release. Pathetic. The one on the Wii is a substantial improvement, at the very least.
Yeah, he's really not as effective as Bill or Samus, just more fun to play with in my mind, granted I'm playing with a keyboard and the programmer specifically says Ryu should always be played with a game pad. Have you tried any other difficulty settings? I feel like that changes a lot. Bill is pretty much unbeatable on super easy and Link is without question my favorite character on extreme because of his small size, downward thrust and boomerang. - Edit: Except on 5-3, Link's jump just doesn't cut it there, I had to bring in Belmont for that one.
This is pretty damn funny. It took me a minute to figure out exactly what was going on but the ending is worth it!
Has anyone else downloaded and played the Co-op missions for Red Dead Redemption. First of all it is a free download, so you can't beat that. Up to four can play but I played with just my brother last night and had a blast. The funny thing was playing with my younger brother. He is the kind of person who picks up spiders and beetles and carries them outside. If he played Grand Theft Auto he would follow all traffic laws and never kill anyone. I had to keep screaming at him over X-Box Live to shoot people and there was a part where we had to deliver and protect a carriage and he fucking got in the back like he was a passenger. This led to more yelling about getting the fuck up here to help protect me.
It's actually surprising how common this can be. One of the most popular role-playing games released this generation is Oblivion. The vanilla version of the game is pretty dreadful, ridiculously overinflated review scores notwithstanding. The game mechanics, repetitive level design, the painfully bland Tolkien rip-off setting that consists of the same meadow everywhere, pants-on-head retarded AI, and the utter lack of reactivity in the game world to the player's choices are (or indeed, lack of ANY player choices in how to complete quests) all combine to make it one of the most overrated games I've ever played. However, the mods have really made it into a different game. Since the game is easily moddable, it has attracted a large community, many of whom are skilled programmers, to change a lot of what was wrong with the game. And they've really made huge changes - they've improved the combat to add special attacks, improved the AI, fixed a lot of the awful game mechanics like level-scaling, and have even made entirely new game worlds with original quest lines that give the player more control in how they can accomplish things by providing alternate solutions and consequences for player actions.
I suggest everyone read this article about what could be the future of video game motion capture. From what it sounds like, not only does it completely capture the person's image with stunning similarity, but it also mimics their facial expressions to a T. The author doesn't go into this, but I wonder what it means for characters in video games. Are they going to hire more traditional Hollywood names if visual performance is going to become even that much more important? We've already hashed it out in this thread, but is the divide between movies and video games getting narrowed even more? I wonder what it means to prominent voice actors who don't have the right look.
Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood was announced last month (to be released November 2010) in case anyone missed it. Will have up to about 15 hours of single player gameplay and they've included online multiplayer as well. The article also says there will be some new weapons, and you will actually train other Assassin's and get them to carry out some tasks (killings) for you.
If you're looking for a really fun little time-waster, check out Tower of Greed; http://www.kongregate.com/games/EpicSha ... r-of-greed It's an addicting pixelated game where the tower constantly rises from floor and floor, and you have to grab as much treasure as possible. If you die, you lose all your treasure, and there is an exit every five floors. I have been trying to get $500,000 for the past couple of days, but have so far only gotten as high as $350,000. It starts getting legitimately difficult around Floor 65, or the $250,000+ mark.
So it looks like we're gonna be able to get (a better than current) Hulu on the PS3 (and a shitload of other platforms), but first have to upgrade to Playstation Plus. Penny Arcade has a nice little piece on it (one of the few times I disagree with Tycho). Still, this means that for a $50 yearly fee for PS+ and a $10 monthly fee for Hulu, I might be able to lose my $120/month cable. Thought about it, I'm in.
I was interested when I first heard about it, but after finding out a little more about their plan I'm not interested. You don't get any of the cable channels (no FX means no Rescue Me), and you'll probably still have some delay from the actual air date to when it's uploaded to Hulu. So you might be able to eliminate the "local channels fee" from your cable, but I don't think this service really competes with it yet. It is a good step towards ala carte tv service though.
All I know is that when Civilization 5 comes out in September, the world as I know it will cease to exist for a few days.
I'm very late to this party, but I noticed awhile back a few of you bought "Braid" for Live Arcade/PS Network/Steam. Have any of you completed this game? Did a quick check and read up on some mentions, but no one said anything about completing it. I just finished it today. The last time I played it was back in September when I bought it on sale. I went as far as I could which was up to world 5 or 6, was missing a few puzzle pieces and somehow I just ended up not finishing it until recently. I must say though, the ending is so fucking bizarre and well worth it. I haven't felt this accomplished over a video game since Goldeneye on 00 Agent.
For those of you with Transformers War for Cyberton, you may want to check out the multiplayer this weekend. Double xp for everything. I've been getting an easy 10k+ xp a match on Conquest mode, getting 25 on multiple characters this weekend alone should be easy as shit. Also, if you really want the xp rolling in even when it isn't double xp, just stick to Conquest. You get tons of points for running around capturing the nodes and I find myself with more kills than I normally get in Team Deathmatch. I don't know what I'm going to really do to get a lot of kills when I'm leveling the other classes, but its so overpowered as a leader with fusion cannon right now. Easy 20-30+ kills per match. Manihack, you were very correct with the fusion cannon. edit: Forgot to add that a 'map pack #1' is set to release sometime soon, not sure what the exact date is. I think they are adding at least 3 maps as well as 5 new multiplayer characters, the three preorder characters (Jazz, Demolisher, and Shockwave) and two new ones. I find it hilarious that they are adding the preorder characters after some people have paid up to $100 on eBay for just one of the three. I myself sold my Jazz DLC code for $50 bucks while the gettin' was good. Go me.
So I read. People are just irrational. Of course Activision were going to release the pre-order characters as DLC in a matter of weeks. Good for you for scoring $50 because some random gamer was dumb and impatient.
Finished Red Dead Redemption. An awesome game from begining to end. Considered going fishing, then figured renting a fishing game would be easier. It's sad when you're too lazy to actually go fishing.
Wow, I finished it yesterday. It was pretty awesome, although there was a lot of area of the map where nothing happened, just kind of dead space they could have filled with some side missions or something. Spoiler Took me about an hour of running around afterward that I discovered they had us playing as the dude's son. I plugged in my roommates PS3 earlier today and started playing Final Fantasy 13. Kind of funny how much they push the 'Let's all be a hero!!' theme right off the bat...we'll see how it plays out.
For starters, Other M has just acquired the $20.00 Amazon pre-order credit (and official box art). I used the $20.00 credit I got from pre-ordering Galaxy 2, bringing Other M to $29.99 and I still get the $20.00 credit for that. Love it! Also, and I know I'm hellaciously late on this but I was up at 2am the other morning with my little guy and checked out the E3 coverage on Gamespot.com. I can't do that when the rest of the house is awake because they bark out orders over my shoulder ("I want to see that!" "Ooooh! Click that!" "Hey! What's that?") and that makes it hard to really pay attention. My opinions (as if anyone cares): Mortal Kombat looks awesome! I haven't played a MK game in years but I'm going to have to give this one a go. I've never really been a fan of the fighting games (too many stinking button combinations that must be precise) but MK is going to kick ass! The graphics are stellar! Another game series I never got into was Kirby but Kirby's Epic Yarn looks so neat! Also, a new 2d, side-scrolling DK Country?! Woohoo! I won't even get into Zelda: Skyward Sword. That almost goes without saying. My PS3 isn't hooked up to the net but with the new NFS: Hot Pursuit coming out, I may have to. There are others but those are the big ones. I didn't realize there was so much awesomeness coming down the pike. I'm stoked!
