Strip mining is slightly tedious for me but the stacks and stacks of cobblestone you get can go into interesting structures. I didn't know what to do with them so I built a complex of three huge hollow pyramids with bases of 64 blocks on each side.

I think it's really interesting that so many people have fallen in love with a game that is still essentially not close to being finished. It kind of makes me wonder how people will react once some of the changes that the creator is planning for the game come into effect. People bought a simple game and over the next few years are going to see it turn into something possibly quite different. There are talks of trading systems, new monsters, goblin villages, a new hell world with portals, expansion packs, etc. It'll be fun to see how people react when things start to change.

I'm waiting for a couple days. I'll let people get all the addons working and all that crap. I have a decent amount (healbot, recount, omen, quartz, etc...) so I'm just going to wait until some of those get fixed.

I will say, some of the changes look pretty sweet. Paladin healing (HP is my main) will be a pain in the ass and pretty challenging. Granted, its pretty easy right now if you have a good raid healer (generally druid). I'm excited.

I think the first toon I roll come cataclysm will be a hunter. Not having to worry about ammo and all that jazz will make things easier and more fun.

Yeah, usually for the most part addons are working fine after most patches unless they have big changes to the api. Otherwise the authors generally just have to change the .toc file to refer to the latest patch and it'll work (hell there's been some addons that haven't been updated awhile and that was the only change needed to take them from Incompatible or w/e to working).

I haven't looked too much at the stuff. I might pick up the game again after the expansion drops and do some PvP, but I quit in August just because I logged in once a week and didn't do anything other than chat with a friend since I couldn't be bothered to actually find decent arena partners after my friend sold his account. I think I've got around 9.5k points on my druid and something like 6k on my priest, both have all their gear except the druid needs his t2 weapon, haha.

Basically all I did from January to quitting was work the AH to see how much gold I could make (bought both mammoths and a chopper within about 10 minutes of each other). Other than that I arenaed. Priest was pretty fun, druid was fun and I was probably best at him since I played him all through Wotlk. Leveled a pally before priest and jesus that was boring to pvp with.

Anyways, if there's any huge changes (especially pvp related toning down burst and the ridiculousness of some classes like warriors), let me know and I might get back into a bit if I'm not swamped with school.

So I recently got Battlefield: Bad Company 2 and I love it. Granted, its essentially Call of Duty with vehicles, but that is not necessarily a bad thing. Does anyone else still play it? I'd love a partner in crime.

    Also, this looks interesting:

I imagine it'll turn into a cluster-fuck after only a few updates. There's always the "purists" who can't deal with change, and when you pit them against the players who enjoy updates and tweaks and new game content it almost always devolves into a screaming match that goes nowhere. I generally don't like change myself, but I understand that if you let a game stagnate too long it's a death sentence.

That being said, I'd be shocked if the game's creator didn't offer up the various versions separately so that everyone can play the game as they want it. It'd be a hell of a money-maker.

I've been watching various youtube videos this evening listing the creators' top ten horror games lists. Since we're zooming headlong into Halloween, I thought I'd bring this up so you could hash out your own list if you were bored.

There are the ones that seem to be on everyone's lists somewhere:

    Silent Hill
    Silent Hill 2
    Fatal Frame
    Eternal Darkness
    Doom3
    Resident Evil
    Clock Tower
    System Shock 2
    Condemned: Criminal Origins
    F.E.A.R.
(that even made #1 on some asshole's list - WTF?!)

For me, Resident Evil 4 is the pinnacle and surprisingly it made barely any lists. Only maybe a third of the game was actually nerve-wrackingly scary but the gameplay mixed with the atmosphere made it nearly perfect. And fuck those Garradors. Even though you only encountered them in well-lit rooms, they still scared the crap out of me. I gotta ask though: what the hell was Ada doing wearing an evening gown? Who fights Las Plagas dressed like that?! (as an aside, I sometimes sign up for online, spammy things using the name Ada Wong. That way if I get an email addressed to Ada, I know it's bullshit).

The first batch of Resident Evils came out when I was a late teen/early adult and I had "better things to do" than play video games (and I couldn't afford them, being young, dumb and full of cum). I picked it up when the remake came out on the Cube because of all the hype but I absolutely LOATHED the controls. 400 tries in that first room off the dining room with that first zombie munching on my ass because I couldn't move the way I wanted left me sad and frustrated. I so totally wanted to love it. I dig zombies so much (I have other board monikers devoted to the genre) that it should have been a natural but no. I HATED it. I had especially high hopes when the Wii port came out a year or so ago. I drove my happy ass literally clear across town to the only rental store that carried it to rent it juuuust in case the controls were the same. They were. Fuck! Even my oldest, "Bioshock ass-kicker on survival mode" kid threw down the controller in disgust.

F.E.A.R. was a good game, don't get me wrong. It too had some nice atmosphere and the way they weaved Alma into your subconscious was neat but fighting the same 4 types of HUMAN dickheads all the time got boring. And what was the deal with Prater-Willie, I mean Ketel One, I mean Keyser Soze (Jesus Christ - what WAS his name?!)? He was Alma's dad? Brother? I was her brother? Uncle? Fuck! The story was so convoluted that I don't remember what the conclusion was. Even more pitiful - I actually pre-ordered part 2. It fixed the bullshit of only fighting the same 4 human enemies but that's about all the game had going for it. I spent so long trying to obliterate those umbilical-corded zombie assholes in the school that I flat gave the fuck up.

This is just the first part of my soliloquy on horror games. Tune in tomorrow when I ramble my fat ass off and try to pretend that you people give a fuck what I think!

Before I forget, I have to rant about the Condemned series, which seems to pop up quite a bit. Because I only recently got my first 360, I hadn't had the pleasure of playing Criminal Origins. My store is selling it dirt cheap and I might buy it if my coworker mans up and pays for my copy of The Darkness that I loaned him and he left in the work cabinet that disappeared.

Nevertheless, I have twice rented Bloodshot. The first time, I famously returned it largely unplayed because I couldn't figure out how to duck (this was when we first got the PS3 and I have never denied being a complete dumbass). The second time I returned it largely unplayed because the specific button combos eluded me. I shamefully admit I just couldn't string together a useful combo and repeatedly got my ass obliterated. Other than that, it was hella creepy!

It's already had quite a few updates, I only hope that Notch isn't cowed by the bitching of the fanboys and continues to make his game his way.

Except that all goes out the window when you meet the boss who has the Napoleon complex, jeez what a disappointment.

Take F.E.A.R. off that list and replace it with Dead Space, and you've got the makings of a good list.

I still play Silent Hill 2 at least once a year, that game is severely disturbing, once you sit through the Pyramid Head mannequin rape it's all downhill from there.

Eternal Darkness is amazing. I played it through no less than 5 times.

I think it's kind of a stretch to call RE4 a horror game, even though it still has some of the elements. Part of what made RE so scary was the controls/camera. Yeah, they were shitty. But not knowing what's going to happen when you turn a corner because you can't see shit? That's awesome. The controls aren't that hard to get a hang of, I'm not sure what your guys' deal was. Maybe it was my Off-Road and RC Pro-Am experience that helped me control from not the players perspective. I'd really look into trying to play RE and RE2 again if not all of the other ones also.
Like you, I waited until they were all released on the Gamecube too.

Like hell! There were monsters, flying bugs, more monsters, giant ogres, giant lake monsters. The only thing the game didn't have was aliens and ghosts!

And truly, the abandoned prison section with the Regenerators (Oh look! Another monster!) was so truly terrifying I could barely finish it.

Every game has monsters, flying bugs, and more monsters. I guess it is a horror game, but not like the first RE's were.

Regarding the Regenerators, yeah that shit was crazy. I had my thermal scope on zoomed in waiting for one to round the corner when one of them pops up and fills my scope. I jumped and gasped and it was awesome. Oh and then when I'm standing over one shooting it with a shotgun and it pops up onto me and sticks out it's spikes? That was very unexpected.

A similar thing to the scope incident happened in the part where you had to protect Ashley as she turned a bunch of cranks. One of the dudes wielding a mace popped up in my scope and I shit my pants again.

All of the above things are true, however what made is not scary is the fact that with semi-competent briefcase management you easily had enough weapons, ammo and herbs to take on any foe. Don't get me started on that retarded Statue of Napoleon Dipshit stage either...

Wow, I just realized that Fallout: New Vegas comes out in less than a week. I loved fallout 3 so I will definitely be picking this one up, just have to decide if I want it on the 360 or the PC. My only problem is that I have so many games that I want to play, but between work and The Girlfriend, I have very little time to play them all.

Once you got some magnum ammo, there were not any difficult fights left in the game.

There were definitely a few oh shit moments in RE4, but I still think its a stretch to call it a horror game. I loved some of the monsters though, particularly the deaf dudes with the giant claw hands, the iron maidens (spiked regenerators), and that one boss that you had to either freeze or run away from till you entered an elevator. The first time I fought him, I shot a rocket at him, which he dodged by jumping into the ceiling. That was definitely a bit of an oh shit moment.

Did you guys play RE4 on the hardest difficulty? I found myself in a bad way more than once on that. I racked up TONS of deaths in the hedge maze part because I had basically 10 handgun bullets or something. I remember I posted the actual stats on another message board before, but it has since died and so I can't get to the posts.

So incredibly pumped for New Vegas. I played Fallout 3 relentlessly until I did absolutely everything in the game (except I could never get the Firelance).

The first one was way better than Bloodshot. Both were incredibly creepy, but the end battle of Origins was better on a more animalistic level. I know theres going to be a movie at some point, and on how they left the 2nd game with Serial Killer X and everything, I cant imagine a 3rd game isnt in the works. Definitely one of the scariest games.

Other games that scared the B'jesus out of me (in no particular order):

The 7th Guest - its an old one, but when your 10 years old and playing it, its scary as hell.
    F.E.A.R.
    Dead Space
    Bioshock
Thief 3 - The Cradle level was incredibly nerve wracking even though barely anything happened, very creepy atmosphere.

Goddammit Medal of Honor. Why did you have to sellout and go the Modern Warfare route?

Keep churning out the WW2 games. I don't care how many times I storm Omaha Beach, it's still fun.

And it's a hell of a lot better than shooting "opposing forces". All of a sudden, Nazis aren't as bad as the Taliban. What a crock of shit.

Really? Really man? The last generation of MOH had you killing so many Nazi's and Japanese I think actual ones started dropping deal. I'm finally happy they moved on to what is going on here and now. I'm happy they actually went for some real shit, not like the magical "OMG Russians!" route. You know what I'd love/ A game with terrorists coming from Australia. I want Australian terrorist, think about the greatness that could come out of that. I'm tired of Nazi's, German's and Russians. Geesh.
