Got a cheap guitar to play during my time here and decide to decorate it with a sharpie. The progress so far:
Out in the country (and sometimes in the middle of Cairo), they have these enormous clay structures to attract and house pigeons -- a delicacy here. They're huge and fascinating. A sketch of one.
We had parent conferences the other day and since no one cares about my subject, I had a lot of free time. Decided to sketch on an old postcard. "Euripides and the bull"
I finally finished reading 1984 this weekend. I also picked up painting again after probably close to 10 years of not painting.
A new sketch, "Zebiba"... ballpoint pen and marker. A lot of the guys here in Cairo have callouses on their foreheads because, since they pray 5 times a day, their foreheads rub against the prayer rugs. It becomes a point of who can have the bigger one because they're obviously the more devout person. I thought that was interesting, trying to aggressively compete for faith.
I had a cool opportunity this summer... I was invited to make a sculpture for a town in France about the importance of water. They gave me a workshop in an old stone barn... best workshop I've ever had. Long tedious hours, but great experience so far. I'm bending steel rods, welding, grinding, repeat. Here's a progress shot.
