I've been thinking about this since the first round of body talk in this thread, and I was wondering what other people would have to say about this. When you're talking about whether people are hot or not, do you find that you judge men and women differently? I guess this is more directed to the TiBettes because, like, guys can't even tell when other guys are hot, man, how am I supposed to know? But whenever the discussion is about whether a girl is attractive or not, it seems like people (girls included, maybe even more so) nitpick so much more about exactly how or why she is or isn't attractive. Like, not just "she's fat/she's thin" comments, but things like "meh, her chin is strange" or "her eyes are so close together" or "her hair is so thin" get thrown around in any discussion. (You know, like that scene in Mean Girls.) But it doesn't seem like men get as scrutinized negatively, even when someone doesn't think they're hot. I hear girls talk about weird specific things when talking about why they think they're attractive ("he has such a good jawline" or "he has nice broad shoulders") but I don't think it's the norm to get that detailed about negative commentary. Also, I hear a lot more accepting phrases like "I don't find him attractive, but I can see how someone would," or "he's not my type, but yeah he's definitely yours." With girls it's more like NO. SHE IS NOT ATTRACTIVE AND THAT IS A FACT. It just becomes much more of a debate with women. Or is that just my group of friends slash this board? Judging from other TiBette's talk of girls that they're used to, I think I have a pretty abnormal sample pool when it comes to what's normal female behavior, so I'm just curious if that's always what it's like.

(I've had this "make a post" window up for hours, and I'm sure the thread has moved in wildly different directions from where I last left it where this would've been relevant, so sorry for being random.)

I've been trying to catch up on this thread since November. Closing this tab is going to be like putting War and Peace on the bookshelf.

 

One of the standing 'amazing insights into the human condition' among my group of meat space friends, is that probably the biggest differences between men and women are that men take a risk asking to get laid. They risk rejection and they get rejected far more than they get laid. Women take a risk actually fucking, that the guy will turn out to be violent or abusive. But they get laid way more than they get beaten up or raped. Much higher likelihood, much lower consequence for guys. Much higher consequence but much lower likelihood for girls. Extending that conversation - girls can often be attractive by just not being fat and wearing a nice outfit. For a lot of 'hot' girls in a bar - the reality is that they're not fat, and they dress well - and that's the end of it. Girls get the benefits of being attractive in many cases just by not fucking it up. That's rarely the case for guys.

The difference is that a guy can still be attractive if he's got personality. Ugly sexy guys are all over the place. Seth Rogen and Zach Galifianakis have fucking legions of fan girls lusting after them. Sean Connery practically needs a fucking zimmer frame - but 90% of women alive would hump his zimmer frame while they waited for the Viagra to kick in if he made the offer. How many people do you know who wants to fuck Whoopi Goldberg? Or Kelly Osbourne? Or Susan Boyle? I bet you could take every person in the world who'd willingly fuck any of those three women and not outnumber the girls who's name's start with A who want to fuck Ron Perlman. I doubt you'd even equal Steve Buscemi's waiting list. Lets not even start on Hugh Hefner's appeal.

Obscenely pysically attractive guys, usually ones who work insane hours in the gym might skate on just their looks. Otherwise guys are attractive because of their other characteristics.

I don't think it's strictly an ev-psych or ev-bio question. Or any kind of biology.

A lot of it is sociological. Women are told that they have value tied primarily to their looks, men to their skills. It stands to reason that people would internalize that, and women would be more thoroughly scrutinized physically.

Also, Kubla, thinking somebody is attractive doesn't mean I would fuck them.
