I think I have enough jigs for 5 days of fishing, I will lose about 20% of them in one trip but it is worth it.
Re: Re: The Fishing and Hunting Thread He does custom reel work I think. I would love to be able to feel what that fish (jack?) in the bottom picture feels like hooked on light tackle. I'll bet it's fun as hell.
Re: Re: The Fishing and Hunting Thread Yep that fish on the bottom is a Yellowtail Jack, I hooked him about 250 feet down on 50 pound test with my drag buttoned down and got my ass handed to me it took about 15 minutes to get him up. That fish weighed 33 pounds and it is the biggest yellowtail I have ever caught. The first fish is a trigger fish, the second is a cabrilla (leopard grouper) I actually have 3 jobs, I do mortgages, I fix reels and I bartend the reason I have 3 jobs is because I like to hunt and fish a lot, work hard fish harder.
Here is the boat I fish off of in Mexico, it is a mother ship with 9 small pangas, these are the horrible views I am subjected to.
This is a bit of a read but it is the report I write for this trip every year. <a class="postlink" href="http://www.bdoutdoors.com/forums/baja-mexico-fishing-reports-discussion/500217-tony-reyes-report-june-9-14-2013-a.html#post3154307" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://www.bdoutdoors.com/forums/baja-m ... ost3154307</a>
Re: Re: The Fishing and Hunting Thread For the record, I wasn't trying to sound like a douche when I asked that.
I read part of that article and then my eyes wandered over to the right side of the page and found this: Then I lost interest in you. Sorry.
Re: Re: The Fishing and Hunting Thread I know, no offense taken people ask me that all the time because it seems like I take a lot of vacations, when in reality I do take a lot of vacations. I really only like to do 2 things, hunt and fish, so that is what I do.
This could be lots of fun. Mid-August Goose opener, 10 bird bag limit, no plugs, electronic calls... The best part is, I was going to miss the Early Goose opener that typically falls on Labor Day weekend this year because of a weeklong gunsmithing seminar in Montana. This would let me hunt that opener and shoot even more birds.
I agree with increasing the bag and possession limit on honkers. They are overrunning our state. I can't say I agree with electronic calls, though. Learn to call, you lazy fuckers. All you need to know are honks, moans, pleas, and double clucks and you will bring them in every time. Hell, you only really need to know how to honk and double cluck to get them to commit. Calling ducks is much more difficult than calling honkers.
I have only used an E-caller for coyote hunting, not sure I'd even want to bring one waterfowling (The less gear the better). I have a double reed goose call I've been trying to learn and would love to bring some in with it this year.
You need to switch to a short reed call. Tim Grounds' Half Breed is still as good as when he made the first one. DRC (Death Row Calls) is good too. You just need to learn to call with your throat and not just blow into it. I forget the name of the short reed that I learned on, but I'll check it out when I go home for lunch and let you know. It's a really mellow, easy to blow call that's great for beginners. These guys have some pretty decent videos on how to blow a short reed.
Correction, my goose call is indeed a short reed. My duck call is a Mick Lacy double reed and the goose call is laminated wood/acrylic. I used that video you posted to try and figure it out. I blow them from the diaphragm like I'm playing a horn. The hardest thing to figure out was how to hold the call but with practice it's a lot easier now. My dog goes batshit when I blow on a call before commanding him to fetch something- it makes him want it 10X more. Can't wait to see him with real birds. I'm doing some gun training with him for the first time this Sunday.
You can't just blow into it. You need to almost growl into it. It's a bad way to describe it, but that's the best I know. Take a second and make the loudest swallow you can make. That should be the sound coming out of your throat when you call. Once you can do that and get the natural grittiness of the goose in the low notes, you can start working on breaking from low notes into high notes for a honk. From there, just work your clucks and moans and you should be fine. For double clucks, I say "whoo-kit" into the call. Then, all you have to do is work on your off hand for making it sound like multiple geese and they should start dropping right into your lap.
