Only if it's in your hair. Mix it into your shampoo a few days before opening weekend for best results. Last year I hunted in a tall tripod stand over a field and one evening had four does feeding about 50-75 yards away and slightly downwind, moving towards being fully downwind of me. There was a light breeze and I only had a buck tag, so I was just watching. I had bad gas and let out a silent but deadly- five seconds after that their ears were up and they fled. Is there some anti-fart hunting clothing out there?
I was able to hit up the marsh for a chance at redfish/flounder/specs on Saturday and ended up catching 6 flounder and 3 specs. The redfish were not biting very well while we were on the water. I saw a friend pull out 2 reds and that was it for redfish. It was a long trip, but very enjoyable in the kayak.
10 more honkers fell to their doom on Saturday. Had we not been in the field directly adjacent to one of the top goose guides in the state, we'd have blasted our limit in under an hour. Now the season is closed for 2 weeks and I can concentrate on catching sturgeon and muskies.
Fishing in the Boundary Waters was so-so last week. I caught a dozen fish over two days (enough to eat), and none were larger than 3 lbs. One smallmouth bass and plenty small pike. Weather was windy and rainy (shitty) and made for tough paddling. At least the scenery was nice as usual.
Another weekend up North, this time a grouse hunting trip turned into a cast n' blast. A coworker and I drove up to his family's land to the West of International Falls, MN on Friday to hunt the birds with our dogs and the weather turned. Fog and clouds on Saturday turned into light rain and snow in the afternoon, and it snowed for the rest of the weekend so we opted for fishing with one of his friends on Sunday. He lives on Rainy Lake, on the International border, and knows it well. Saturday was my dog Buck's first day of real hunting so I kept my expectations low and just enjoying watching him and my coworker's young vizsla Nos hunt together. We saw a woodcock, then several ruffed and sharptail grouse, but didn't connect on any. One bird would have been an easier shot but was just a few feet over Buck. The dogs had a great day and we had fun too. Buck and I still have a lot of work to do but he got a good start On Sunday morning, we set out on the lake during a snowstorm in a 16' Alumacraft. After a half hour of jigging the other two guys started catching some small walleyes and crappies. After an hour of nothing I pulled this one out of 40 feet with a minnow on a jig. It was 15.5"- easily the biggest crappie I have caught, and the fillets will fit nicely in my cast iron pan. I caught a couple more crappies but half the size of that one. It made up for not shooting any birds yesterday. I am finally dry and warm at home but being out there was well worth it.
That's a huge fucking crappie. Make sure to send in the picture and measurements to get your "Master Angler Certificate" <a class="postlink" href="http://www.fishinghalloffamemn.com/master-anglers/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://www.fishinghalloffamemn.com/master-anglers/</a>
"Master Angler" or "Lucky Bastard"? I'll send it in, thanks! The fish surprised the hell out of me... it came up out of the depths without any struggle so I realized it had some size only after it was in the net.
Awesome fish, congrats! I'm looking at targeting some crappie soon. It will be my first time trying for them, so it should be an adventure!
I got a beautiful green-winged teal in full plumage yesterday. You don't see them around here very often, so I'm thinking about getting it mounted.
Got any pics? I've shot some blue-winged teal but never seen a green-winged. I hunted grouse up near Duluth, MN yesterday with a buddy. Buck flushed two but we didn't hit either of them. Both were within 25 yards of each other, about 1/4 mile from the parking lot as we were walking on our way back. Surprised the hell out of us. I also scouted an 80-acre plot that I now have permission to hunt and am very excited to get back out there. It is mostly wooded, with ravines, a couple small ponds, trails, and lined with pastures. If we can't squeeze a whitetail out of there I'll be disappointed. We saw a couple dozen turkeys too so now I have a place to hunt them.
No pics. I figured that since I was thinking about getting it mounted, there were no need for pics. They never look as pretty dead as they do when they're mounted.
This weekend was firearms deer opener and I went hunting with a co-worker. He shot a doe and button buck yesterday and I shot a doe tonight. It was about 50 yards from my stand and didn't move after I shot it with my .270. It's a nice sized doe so I'm happy.
We hunted up in the Chippewa Nat'l Forest in some of the densest woods I've ever hunted this past weekend. We hung our stands Friday night. When we woke up Saturday morning, there was about 3" of snow. Everything looked completely different. Navigating to my stand in the dark with a fresh covering of snow through pathless woods is one of the most difficult things I've ever had to do. I got turned around less than 100 yards from the road.
Yeah I was never in the Boy Scouts Ive been turned around in less than 20 yards in 30 acres or so of my grandpa's woods Ive grown up in my entire life. Survivor man I am not.
A buddy and I spent the weekend in the woods south of Duluth, MN and didn't see a single deer. From Saturday afternoon to Sunday morning the precipitation ranged from "aggressive mist" to "angry downpour" and it was super windy the entire weekend... just plain shitty weather. He couldn't hunt with me on Sunday afternoon so we salvaged the day by shooting a handful of squirrels after sitting and getting wet all morning. At one point along a trail I stopped just to count squirrels and there were eight within .22 range. Wish I still had my .22 handgun. The only plus side to this weekend were the turkeys. They are all over the 80-acre I have permission to hunt, so I'm gobbler hunting this spring. We could have killed a few just spot-and-stalk hunting this weekend.
