I was wearing an arm guard and it hit right under it the limb of the bow hit me not the bow string it could have been worse. I thought I broke it at first because it swelled up and blood started pouring out
Yeah, it is crazy, no one has ever heard of it happening. I won the crazy things happen to you lottery.
I had a cousin royally fuck up his left hand by re-using an arrow he stuck a doe with the previous day. It blew up upon release and the remainder of the shaft plunged into the web of his hand between the thumb and index finger. It took multiple surgeries to pick most of the carbon fibers out. Nasty stuff. How am I goose hunting already on Saturday? Is this real? No complaints here but I haven't been able to anticipate the opener as usual.
That sucks man. This year is going to be my first deer season with a rifle. I'm fucking excited! I'll bag one for ya.
Hopefully things open up in time for deer season... but it's just so fucking dry around here, and everything is on fire... they're worried about more fires springing up or having to go and rescue stupid hunters that get trapped behind a wind shifted fire line. It's usually pretty cold and wet by the time deer season rolls around, so it shouldn't be an issue.
Major bummer, Nett. Has that happened previously? Our dove season opened up on Tuesday and I'm tempted to give them a try this weekend just for the hell of it (time spent out with the dog is never wasted). Has anyone tried hunting them just walking along tree and fence lines adjacent to crops?
I've never heard of it happening before, but then again, our forest fire bill has never been $250 million at this point in the year before either. Even after some nice cold weather and rain, here's a list of the active forest fires: http://bcwildfire.com/hprScripts/WildfireNews/Fires.asp?Mode=normal&AllFires=0&FC=0 We're down to 83. Yay?
Despite some shitty weather, we had a fun weekend. Had to cancel going out for the goose opener on Saturday due to heavy thunderstorms that lasted almost 'til noon, but I went for the alternative and was out dove hunting as soon as the storms ended. The public land was already full of other hunters that were sitting along a gravel pit and set up for pass shooting birds, so we just worked around an unoccupied area of woods interspersed with grassy clearings upland style. Buck flushed two and I nailed one. On Sunday my cousin and I made our way to a muddy shallow lake south of my hometown and had to wait out storms for about an hour at daybreak before we could head out. So much for trying to get there early. We got to our spot and kicked up a huge flock of geese along the way. They flew to the other side of the lake and never returned. Once we were set up and settled down, there were dozens of mallard and teal ducks buzzing around and we could have limited out on them in minutes. Saw hundreds of ducks through the morning but no geese. Oh well. Being opportunists (and bored), we turned our attention to some snipes that were flying around (yes they exist) and I shot four. Buck finally got his opportunity to retrieve some birds from water for the first time and I was thrilled to see him launch into the water as soon as he saw me shooting. He got all four like he knew what he was doing and was a happy dog, which made me even happier. Now we're ready for getting big geese and ducks out of the water now. Good boy. Yesterday we went out after doves again before making the drive back home and I was one for one after a short hunt. Now I have half a dozen tiny little birds in my freezer, ready to be wrapped in bacon and grilled. A good start to this year's hunting season.
Did you train the dog entirely by yourself? I've seen you post several pictures about your dog but never where you got him. Where did you get your dog?
Yep, he's the first dog I've had for myself and trained. I adopted him 2 1/2 years ago at 1 1/2 years of age, so he's 4 now. His first owners just neglected him, which is a fucking shame considering he's a purebred lab and born to be in the field. Buck is a great dog and my biggest struggle has just been getting him in front of live birds for experience, and I've considered doing a game farm hunt sometime but he's been doing pretty well so far.
So if you ever need a bow string 60xcustomstrings.com is a very good company they will get you shit fast. I called a bunch of bow shops in Phoenix for a string and none of them had it and said it would be 2 weeks and cost 100-120 for the string, these guys had the set for $75 and they overnighted it so I had it in 2 days. I took the bow to Bass Pro for installation and shot about 40 arrows and noticed the new string was starting to fray because it was rubbing where the string crossed, bad installation job by bass pro. The installer blamed the bowstring maker and the bow string maker laughed at him and overnighted me a new bus harness. I believe this bow may be haunted but I am going with it I can put 8 in a paper plate at 50 yards so I am leaving today to kill a bull elk.
Deer hunting gear all bought, and with guns all prepped, all that's left is for me to get either general deer [mule deer or whitetail deer-eligible] or whitetail-only tag and to scout a bit more in our hunting area. I'm using red fox urine for cover scent, over synthetic coon urine, and some of those branch scent-wicks to distribute out the doe estrus piss scent. Also got all my calls and rattlin' antlers ready to play. It should be a good time with my brother and me going to hunt. We're freezer-fillers over antler-chasers, so we'll see how it plays out. It'd also be cool to get a good deer cape tanned out for a throw, wall decoration or rug.
Sitting in a mountain lake with some friends for our last fishing trip of the year. Great trout action. Great day. 30 degrees C and lots of fish.
Dropped a doe last weekend during the Virginia Urban Archery season. I was sitting in some kids tree house and stuck her at 20 yards, she made it 60 yards before dropping with a double lung shot. Meat is in the freezer and a loin will be grilled tonight with a nice chimichurri on the side. I love venison.
