The hole is a half inch almost exactly. Yeah, I am going to give all my plants a spraying of Thuricide tomorrow just in case.
My guess is some sort of caterpillar. Half an inch is not that big. Given the clean bullet hole like entrance I don't think it's a rodent. Thuricide might do the trick. Sucks when your hard sweat and long work get eating by the wild. God damned birds eating your shit a minute before it ripens.
Still super impressed with the garden this year. Now that the hot weather is apparently here things are really taking off. Hard to believe everything here and in the herb garden in the background came from seeds I started in my laundry room.
More of a landscaping query- I need to lay some gravel down by my shed, appx 2 tons. The only problem is several hundred feet of grass on a slight embankment between my driveway and the shed. I’ve spent a fair amount of time and money to get that grass where it is today. Aside from walking a wheelbarrow several dozens times back , is there any ideas on how to transport that gravel more quickly?
really depends on how hard the ground is. but you can always just put so wood down to run the wheel Barrow over
You can also have someone with a bobcat/skidsteer come out and lay wood down (that they'll usually have for just this reason). Lighter than the truck, and way fucking easier than hauling it with a wheel barrow. I'd give a few of them a call and see how much it'd cost you... odds are they'd be able to both deliver the gravel and put it where you want. That being said, 2 tons isn't a lot... it's about a yard and a half... I did 15k lbs over a few days with a wheelbarrow... 1.5 yards should take you an hour or so. Worst case hire some manual labour to do it for you.
Just to tag on to what Nett said. Moving material is exactly what 15-16 year old males we're made to do. Get a couple of wheelbarrows, put down the wood and pull a couple of neighbor boys off their phones and give them a chance to earn $50 each upon completion of the job. They will make some mistakes but will work hard if given a chance.
I can get manual labour from the local landscaping place for $40 an hour, and they will bring their own shovels and wheelbarrows. Less than 2 yards would take them 30 minutes.
So yeah... shit's growing way, way faster than I thought it could. Lots of hot, humid weather, lots of fertilizer, and things are going nuts... some shit has easily doubled in size in a matter of a few days. I count easily 250 tomato blossoms right now... it should be a good year! And still no rabbits.
First cucumber of the year. But I did notice some Septoria leaf spot on a couple of my tomato plants. Has anyone tried Fung-onil or any other thing to successfully treat it?
Last year I put a layer or two of straw around my potato plants rather than hilling them, which is more difficult in a raised bed. This year I had three wheelbarrow loads of compost fresh off the pile to work with. Much better. Everyone should have even a small compost pile. And I still love these raised beds, it's the only way to go
Everything is growing like crazy. Had a few ants eating some stuff but they were exterminated a few days ago... turns out that there was a monster ant colony not 10 feet away at the base of a tree that was being eaten alive. Once I noticed it and really looked, you could see hundreds of them just marching along the tree branches eating everything in sight. No more... they be dead now. Everything else in the wicking bed is doing fantastically... I still can't believe I have 26 tomato plants growing that close to each other...
