I love how you're still using that extra shower as your grow farm. Nice! I have to say you're inspiring me... I'm so far behind this year, pretty well given up due to trying to handle the new puppy and other stuff... I might just have to skip any thoughts of planting this year. We'll see how it goes, but maybe this year is just a rebuilding year that preps for next year.
Right now I'm trying to train her to NOT dig the fuck out of my raised beds. It's not going well, so far.
Between the smells, and the innate drive to bury all of her toys in the nice, black, soft soil, she just doesn't give my raised beds any respect at all.
Cheapest rototiller I've ever seen, I know... still, I'm not sure she'll stop once shit is planted and sprouting.
It's kind of a shitty day outside, so Dad and I got out the wood for the new garden beds we bought and hit them with some Thompson's Water seal. It's red cedar, so it'll last a long time anyway but we're hoping they'll retain that nice wood look on the exterior rather than gray out. These things are super easy to assemble, all tongue and groove, so when dry I'll throw 'em back in the box and bring it home to get it set up. Can't wait.
It'll be interesting to see how it goes, as the greying effect is mostly due to UV damage, not drying out, etc. So my guess will be that they will not rot or dry out as fast, but the sun will still grey them out. The really high end boat finishes, like Epiphanes, etc, all have really high end complex UV blockers in them to help protect the wood from sun damage... but they are crazy expensive, and not something I'd spend for a garden box. That being said, I think you'll get some good results from the Thompson's to slow down any rot or other water damage. That system looks pretty slick... never seen it before.
Goddamnit. The garden survived the freak morning snow a couple days ago but didn't make it through the ducks getting in there. I am out kale, cabbage, baby bok, a portion of radishes, and swiss chard. The herbs were nibbled but will be okay. They didn't find the plants in the bath tub or bother the snow peas. Motherfuxkingducks.
I’ll still call it a win if we can get a few more years out of them. My Dad, who turns 70 this year, says “Hell they’ll last longer than me!” (Not something a son wants to hear of course.) Me neither. It was a little expensive but honestly with the cost of lumber I wouldn’t say it was unreasonable. I’m already thinking of buying another. I’ll post pics when it’s all assembled.
I really need to re pot them, but for now I'll just move them outside. They are up into my hanging lights. YUGE
Small town drama - those in possession of plots have been asked to “pause our gardening “, as there appears to be some confusion over plot numbers, which may have changed recently, and plot ownership is in dispute. All I want to do is plant some fucking tomatoes.*sigh*
TIL that potatoes come in both determinate and indeterminate varieties. Determinates only produce potatoes around soil depth. Indeterminates will continue to produce additional layers if you keep adding soil as they grow. Did anyone else know this?
Today I learned! Makes sense as to why I've heard of people growing a fuckton in those tater towers, or a scant amount. The grower may have chosen the wrong cultivar.
