I like making scalloped potatoes and layering ham in the potatoes, along with a bit of hot mustard. Also a nice addition to an omelet in the morning.
You can make bean soup too. Use the lil white beans. Best if you've got a nice big bone. Hm, I guess that applies to a few things in life.
Wrap half a strip of bacon around a cocktail weiner, bake for 15 minutes or so. Pull them out and sprinkle brown sugar on them. Back in the oven for a couple minutes until the sugar is melted and serve.
I repped Rob4Bronco's thanking him for this recipe, but I figure I will throw my praise on top of Currer Bell's publicly so that if anyone was on the fence about it they will try it out. This recipe kicked major ass. I'm half-retarded in the kitchen, but even I pulled it off and my family loved it even going so far as to request that I make it again next year. Even my mom who normally doesn't like sweet potatoes enjoyed it.
I did that one year (Northern Bean Soup), but the kids preferred split pea. What I did do for dinner last night was make ham Reubens. Really good rye bread, kraut, Marie's 1000 Island. Left them open-faced, covered them in swiss, and put 'em under the broiler. Awesome.
Ham + mac 'n' cheese (homemade please) + peas = good & good for you (ok, not really but at least it's got some green stuff in there)
The Girlfriend did a Buffalo Chicken dip. 3 lbs. of shredded chicken, sour cream, cheese and 12 oz. of Tapatio hot sauce. It was heavenly, in small doses. In large doses, it was not so great. By the way, I'm lactose intolerant. I can honestly say, that was the worst smelling aftermath of anything ever. I have had the Traveller's D, Giardia, and Nicaraguan street food AT THE SAME TIME, and it wasn't that bad. My God, what an anal hangover.
Bang on. And I also find that thickening gravy with vegetables is so much better than using flour or corn starch. It's soooo much more flavourful, and has a more pleasing texture, I find.
