Thanks dude-much appreciated. I did try running the windows installer, but it said that it would be installing it again, as opposed to replacing/over writing what was already there. One other thing: the walkthroughs I've found for formatting mentioned that I'll need the product key for the windows disc-it's not written on it, so any ideas how I go about getting it?
Sorry-was too late to edit my above post. I've found my product key so that's cool, but I'm only a couple of steps into the formatting and I'm stuck. I'm using this guide: <a class="postlink" href="http://www.ehow.com/how_6026_format-hard-drive.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://www.ehow.com/how_6026_format-hard-drive.html</a> and I'm a bit lost-it says to delete all partitions, but does that also include the primary partition? Because if it does, it won't let me. I have tried googling this stuff, but the answer is evading me.
Are you looking at the first set of directions, for formatting a secondary hard drive while using Windows or the second set, for formatting using the XP CD? If you booted to the XP CD then there's no reason why you shouldn't be able to delete all partitions. If you're trying to do it from within XP itself you can't because Windows is running from that partition and you can't delete that partition while Windows is using it. The first set of directions is for formatting a spare or second HD.
Aha-that would explain it. Well, that's me completely stumped then, seeing as the xp cd doesn't seem to want to do what everyone is saying it should. Bollocks. Cheers anyway dude.
You said earlier: That's exactly what the XP CD is supposed to do. You can re-install (and reformat the drive) Windows with the operating system CD. Then you have to use the other CD to load the video/audio/network/etc. drivers.
I just figured it out-I found a tutorial which explained things clearly and took away the fear that I'd kill the computer to death. It's doing its thing, so fingers crossed. Thanks all for your sagest words.
Hey I didn't know where to put this, but here goes: I want to get my girlfriend a pink iPod alarm clock dock that she can use with her iPhone. I have been told that these ipod stereos do not support the iPhone, and after looking on ebay and such I have yet to find any pertinent information. So, if anyone could hook me a link to a site or something so I could figure this out, I will rep you like you had a fine pair of tits (double rep if you actually do have nice tits)
This is awesome: Bose Portable SoundDock I have 3 of them. They are powered by rechargable batteries that charge when plugged into the wall, so if I want tunes on the deck, in the garage, by the hot tub, camping, or wherever, I just take it and go. (It obviously has a cord that powers it and charges the iPod or iPhone when docked). I have one in my kitchen and in my bedroom, and use it as an alarm clock. I have an alarm clock iPhone app, and it can play tunes or the internal alarm sounds through the station when it goes off. If the phone rings, or any other alert comes in, if it's audible through the iPhone normally, it'll be heard through the station. In other words, if the iPhone's in the dock, and it rings, the sounds comes out through the dock. They're expensive, but worth every penny I find. The only issue I have is that the case on my iPhone makes the connection a bit loose, but it just means you have to be careful when using the screen on the iPhone while it's docked or it'll come undocked.
Not completely computer illiterate but having a fair amount of trouble finding a reliable program for ripping dvds into avi files. Any suggestions? Sceptical of most of the stuff that comes up in searches.
Here is a site you should take a look at. <a class="postlink" href="http://www.doom9.net/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://www.doom9.net/</a>
"I've kind of got the hang of swimming, but I'm having problem with backstroke" "Here's a guide to swimming the English channel - check it out!" Jesus dude. After you finish going all kinds of cross eyed looking at Doom9 - check out <a class="postlink" href="http://www.autogk.me.uk/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://www.autogk.me.uk/</a> for a relatively simple single download that converts your dvd's to avi's pretty well in the majority of circumstances. You'll find the occasional weird shit that AutoGK won't work with - but 95% of your DVD's, 3 clicks and wait a while, and job done. Go look at Doom9 if you want the really in depth guide or need to trouble shoot why something won't rip.
Anyone had any luck retrieving iPhone contacts from the addressbook.sqlitedb? My girlfriend recently fried hers and inisisted on switching to a blackberry. I can see the contacts using a sqlite browser, but when I try to export them as a .csv excel has problems with the delimiters. Normally I would have her just punch in the numbers by hand but the way the tables are formatted the contact names and numbers are on different tables, meaning she would have to go to the numbers table, punch in the number and then go find the name with the same rowid.
It depends on the dock. The issue stems from the output voltage to the iPod/iPhone. The iPhone and newer iPods can only take a 5V charge (USB std) whereas older ones could take 12V (firewire std) in addition to the 5V. Obviously, in order to facilitate more efficient charging, the 12V was opted for more often than not. Just make sure it's 5V and you're fine. The iPhone compatibility other than that comes down to the interference that you'll get from the cellular antenna with the speakers. You can put it in airplane mode, or just deal with the odd strange noise that lasts 3 seconds. Otherwise, most vendors are charging more for the "iPhone compatible" stuff. Just keep that in mind when you make your decision. Look into the details of the dock before you buy to be safe.
Does anyone have any recommendations for an iPhone app that will allow me to stream music from my iTunes library to my iPhone? I've found "Orb" but I'm reticent to throw down money without any personal experience. It doesn't have to use 3G, just wifi for when I'm home, although if I could use 3G from the gym, that'd be pretty rad. Budget is about $10. Thanks! (P.S> Are we allowed to *ask* about apps in the iPhone thread, or just review them?)
Check out one of the Simplify Media apps. I bought the original and it did exactly what you want. However they now have version 2, which I would have had to pay extra to upgrade to, so I didn't use that one and can't speak for it, but the original worked just fine. Wasn't quite as seamless or pretty as the built-in Music app, but it gets the job done. Almost forgot though, if you have a really large library sometimes it can take a little while to sync, or whatever it does. This can be annoying if you want to pop into it quickly for a song you suddenly realized you didn't happen to have on your iPhone, but it's not as much of a problem if you want to just open the app and stay there.
I Pod I have an iPod Nano, I guess it's about 18 months old or so. Today when I was using it, I turned it off, and now it won't turn on. I even plugged it into my computer when I got home in case the batteries just ran out quickly, but the screen won't turn on. Is there anything to do? I may swing by an Apple store tomorrow but it doesn't look promising.
Try this first: <a class="postlink" href="http://ipod.about.com/od/troubleshootingyouripod/ht/reset_ipod_nano.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://ipod.about.com/od/troubleshootin ... d_nano.htm</a>
This is going to sound completely idiotic and there is more than likely nothing I can do, but I figured I would give it a shot and see if anyone had advice. My lovely ex-boyfriend was kind enough to log into both my facebook and gmail accounts and delete them. I tried logging into my facebook to change the password and was notified that the new password would be sent to my gmail. I then tried to log into my gmail, and he was such a darling he changed the password on that as well. Since he apparently somehow got into my home network, I completely reformatted the hard drive on both my laptop and desktop. (I know he did this because he uploaded a trojan to my computer and made my printer start printing nice sweet little names for me. Yeah, he is immature.) I've had that gmail account since gmail came out, and hate that I have lost it. Am I totally up shit creek or is there any way possible to get either password back? Sorry if this is in the wrong thread.
Fill out the Account Recovery Form. Select "I believe someone has taken over my account". Not sure if it will work, but it's worth a shot. Interestingly, they may have a way to look at your passwords since they ask for the last one you remember.
