If the URL hasn't changed or you know what it was at the time you can try the wayback machine http://web.archive.org/collections/web/advanced.html

This isn't what you want to hear, but your best bet is to call ms customer service, and you'll probably have to send it in. Sounds like the video card took a dump

I had to reinstall Windows 7 because somehow my previous installation was corrupted and my pc wouldnt start up when I came back from vacation last night. Luckily I had the OS on a different partition, but the problem is now my start menu doesnt link to any of the programs that were installed on the data partition. Is it possible to restore those links, (desktop too), so that I don't have to manually reinstall all my old programs.

All my old programs were installed on a d: partition, and the corrupted windows folder from the old C: drive was backed up as windows.old when I reinstalled the OS this morning.

You probably want to reinstall the programs because any .dlls or things that were put in the windows folder are now not there and any registry entries are also most likely gone. I'd spend the extra time and re-install.

I have The Wire Season 1 on my computer. It's 13 avi files and I want to burn them to a series of dvd's that can be played in a dvd player. Is there a mac compatible free (or cheap) way to do this?

I recently installed the full version of Windows 7 on my laptop (HP DV5190US) because the beta was running out in a few days. The beta worked without any problems but after installing the full OS on the computer, I get the following error message followed by the computer rebooting.

"This problem occurred because your video card doesn't support the required version of DirectX. This version of Windows requires a video card that supports DirectX 9.0 or newer."

Looking at my graphics card information, it says that my DirectX version is 8.1. The graphics card is a GeForce Go 7400. It worked fine before the beta ran out Is there any solution to this? I tried updating the drivers through HP's website but that didn't seem to help. Thanks for the help

Did you get all the fancy Aero effects on the beta - translucent windows, etc.? Or were your titlebars and such opaque?

What is the light status on the front? No matter your answer, you'll probably have to send it into MS technical support. The repair center is actually in Texas so at least it doesn't have to go all the way to WA.

The fan on my computers power supply is shitting the bed. My computer is a few years old so what do I have to look for in a new one so it is compatible? Is it easy to change?

Also, when I put a new DVD player in a couple years ago I had to put in my Product Key for Windows XP. The product key I have said I already used up all its uses. I had to argue on the phone for 40 minutes with Microsoft untill they gave me a code to enter. Is putting in a new power supply going to make my computer ask for the product key again?

I am having the same issue. I was thinking about just replacing the fan though. It looks like a standard 70mm fan though I could be wrong.

First, no, the power supply is completely transparent to the computer. Replacing it will not be registered as a component change.

Second, if you're feeling industrious, the fans are quite often off-the-shelf fans in off-the-shelf sizes. Pull the power supply apart and grab the fan out of it, head down to your local computer shop and find a similar one.

Power supplies are easy to swap out but sometimes require some care. Plugs only fit where they belong, and it's probably only being held in by 4 screws, but some cases really jam the power supply up in a corner somewhere and wires may be run to places where it's hard to fit fingers. Depends entirely on the brand.

I've been using a service called LimeLinx to host music to my blog. The service is great because I can upload all I want without limit, and they allow direct downloads of the uploaded content no questions asked. The problem is that the process of downloading from them takes quite a few steps and gets annoying after a while. Soooo....

Does anyone know an online service that (hypothetically) take a URL of a hosted music file, and let me embed that source into a player that can then be added to my page?

Alternatively does anyone know a service that allows you to host and comes with its own player than can embedded. I found a great one called SoundCould(.com) but their accounts have a max upload limit that I would max out too quick for my purposes. Any suggestions are welcome.

I'm currently using WinAmp Media Player to hold my library of music and edit filenames--it's pretty good, and it is compatible with my iPod, which I definitely need. However, I'm looking for a better media player specifically made for music and I'm sure there is one out there. To avoid answers I won't use--I don't like iTunes or the Zune media players, or windows media player. Also, I'm using Windows XP Pro 64-bit.

Does anyone know of good media players specifically for Music, that will also sync with your iPod? Thanks guys.

Does anybody here have an AppleTV? I've had one for about 3 years and have had absolutely no problems streaming to it from my computers (both Mac and PC) until now.

I'm not sure if there was a recent software update or what, but for some reason, my ATV no longer recognizes my iTunes library from my PC (it does, however, recognize my Mac library). I googled it, and the only thing I could find is that it's related to my PC firewalls. Well, I turned off my firewall and it still doesn't work. Anybody else having this problem?

I like foobar2000. It's very customizable and can even convert files to versions that are compatible with iPods. And I'm pretty sure this board (or its predecessor) was from where I had heard of foobar2000 originally.

About a year ago, the hard drive in my Dell Dimension E510 shit the bed (I think it was a porn virus - hubby was not happy with me). It was still under extended warranty, so Dell sent a local guy who popped out the old and popped in the new. Ever since then, it is impossible to turn the stupid thing on when it shuts down. There is a little blinking yellow light in the on button (there is another blinking yellow light where the DSL plugs in on the back) that blinks when it is off and it will continue to blink while I frustratingly tap, hold, curse and whisper sweet nothings at that stupid fucking button. I could swear hubby said that he unplugged literally every cord from the tower and that little yellow light in the front was still freaking blinking. Sometimes I can unplug the DSL and it'll start right back up, sometimes no matter what I do it won't start so I'll leave and come back hours later, press the on button and it fires right up.

I have gone into my F2 setup and control panel and played with the hibernation/sleep settings and nothing seems to matter. I have taken to leaving my PC on for days at a time. The real pisser is that sometimes it just blips off for no apparent reason. It is plugged into an APC surge protector thingy, but the thing is older than dirt. I suspect that's what's causing the power blips but what's wrong with the turning on issues? Any help you guys can give would be greatly appreciated!

For the last few weeks, my router will randomly shut down the internet. Both the lights for dsl and internet will turn red then after anywhere from ten seconds to a minute turn green again. Its not that big of a deal, but it kills online gaming. Its a wireless router but I have my computer plugged in with an Ethernet cable.

I'm a computer retard, but any help or suggestions would be extremely appreciated.

Hard drives don't die because of viruses.

Some of the lights take a few seconds to turn off because the power supply holds some juice in the capacitors that will trickle out.

Try this: next time it's shut down, unplug the power cable from the back of it. Wait 30 seconds. Plug it back in, then try powering it back up.

Eliminate the router from the equation: plug your computer directly into the DSL modem and see if the behavior continues. If it does, contact your ISP for either a bad connection or a new modem (probably the latter).

Be sure to enable any/all firewall protection on your machine before you do, and minimize the contact it has to the un-firewalled connection.
